1.1 GROWTH AND ESD: Economic growth is recognised as only one part of the basket of values that contribute to compose development. “The concept of ecologically sustainable development is aimed at ensuring that human activities are kept within an environmentally sustainable envelope of impacts on - and use of - the natural environment” . Economic development and growth should be assessed in direct correlation in a particular economy to gather an equal perspective on the composition and manner of trade as well as the emphasis on ESD in industries. 1.1.2 Environmental degradation: Economists, analysts and environmentalists have observed the linkage between economic/population growth and environmental decline. Australian academic Ted Trainer has forcefully argued that present day forms of global economic development are environmentally and socially untenable. His economic resolutions call for a decline in ‘material living standards in industrialised countries’ and, by implication, will lead to negative economic growth. Similarly, Canadian academic and environmental activist, David Suzuki, argues environmental degradation through the concept that the Earth is increasingly absorbing effluent from factories. He maintains that the unsurpassed solution to this is to endorse negative economic growth by leading with the increase in the use of energy and physical resources.
