What are smart devices? “A smart device is an electronic device, generally connected to other devices or networks via different wireless protocols such as Bluetooth, NFC, Wi-Fi, 3G, etc., that can operate, to some extent, interactively and autonomously”(Weiser). There has been a debate for years on whether or not technology impairs users from performing daily tasks and whether it is has become too much to handle. Technology is a very important and helpful aid to an individual’s every day life. Although some might see it as a distraction, the number of ways in which technology has advanced our capabilities, effectiveness and knowledge is enough to sink most opposing arguments. Technology has created a very different society completely changing the very concept of accessibility, making information available at almost any time and anyplace. Starting as early as 1993, our technology manufacturers shifted their attention to making consumer’s lives easier and more enjoyable. “People didn't start using the term "smartphone" until 1995, but the first true smartphone actually made its debut three years earlier in 1992. It was called the Simon Personal Communicator, and it was created by IBM more than 15 years before Apple released the iPhone” (Tweedie). The Simon Communicator was the first phone with a touchscreen that also had the ability to send and receive emails, faxes, pages, and includes a few widgets (or tools) such as a calendar, world clock, and an appointment scheduler. What may have been seen as revolutionary back then is very common today. Our generation has had the luxury of growing up with a smart device tightly integrated into our daily lives; whether it is to do work, to learn, to play games or to be entertained. Our parents and the generations before did not have such tech to use for work and pleasure. If they had the same technology that we have now who knows what could have been accomplished. The first time I ever received a smartphone was when I turned 12. I had not expected to get one but when I did the first thing I thought about were all the things I could do with it. My parents gifted me the iPhone because they needed to keep in constant connection and track my whereabouts, while I took care
Technology is as much of a distraction as it is an asset. It took me 30 minutes to begin this essay because my phone is right next to me, and I got a text. A single message turned into a full conversation along with an update on multiple social media apps. I was annoyed with my phone because it distracted me from my essay, but how could I stay mad at something so important to me? Without my phone I doubt I could be a functioning adult. I couldn’t have bought my Starbucks this morning, I used the mobile app, and I couldn’t have boarded my plane, my boarding pass was sent to my email, and I couldn’t have called an Uber to get back to school.
Technology is all around the world, just about everywhere there is some type of technology. Phones have filled a huge part of that technology, but even though phones hold a big part, there is much more technology. “Back in the 1950’s, getting a hold of someone meant calling them on their house phone, work phone or visiting them at their home. There were no pagers or mobile phones, and certainly no texting, email or instant messaging of any kind” (Westenberg.) Phones have taken a serious leap of remodeling since when they first came into action in the 1800s. The change was not just super huge, it also came at a rapid pace. “Then our main communication methods began to drastically change around the mid-to-late 90’s. With flip phones from Motorola, candybar phones from Nokia, and very early PDAs from BlackBerry, T-Mobile, Palm and others,
"The Kaiser Family Foundation last year found that school-age kids spend an average of 7 1/2 hours a day in front of a television, a smartphone, or another digital device"(Rosen).
Under constant reminders to improve the quality of our very own education within a rapidly improving technological world. Technology is often seen as a way to increase learning and collaboration on students on college campuses. The current generation of college students has basically grown up with technology in their lives always, and these students are among the earliest of creations of new advances in technology. With this students are encouraged to explore new ways of learning as well as connecting to their campus community, collaborate with peers, learn new information, and demonstrate what they have learned through technology which is essential for college campuses seeking to meet the necessities of present day college students. In order to effectively use technology to improve education, we must investigate how students are currently using technology, what they want from their colleges in the use of technology, how technology impacts educational outcomes, and how these factors differ for different student populations.
Technology has drastically changed over generations. With every advancement in technology the comfortability of every day living has improved. The development of technology began with human kind using natural resources to make simple tools. Tools help to minimize the time and effort of tasks that need to be performed. Current society relies heavily on the technology it has produced. The average American wakes up to a warm shower, a hot meal, a vehicle for transportation, and some type of equipment to help with his job. It has improved the way of life, but it also presents issues in current society. Complete dependency on technology is a concern along with degrading social interaction. Technology only keeps advancing with time. Efforts must
Over the past few decades, technology has changed dramatically in our country. Cell phones were invented about forty years ago, and have been perfected every year since. Cell phones, or smart phones have affected the lives of many individuals in our country by providing a direct line of communication, access to social media, and connect individuals to new marketplaces and jobs.
However, more and more people began the transition over to smart phones. By my sophomore year, almost everyone had chosen his or her side, IPhone or Samsung. After noticing this shift in interest, I started asking, or begging, my parents for a Samsung Galaxy just like what my best friend at the time had gotten for her birthday not too long before. After months of “asking,” it was Christmas time and I had pretty much given up all hope for the new device and was feeling so content with my Samsung Intensity II slider phone that I kind of even forgot about my obsession with the new, trendy phones. This is why I was taken so of guard when my fingers raced under the folds of the festive wrapping paper to have my eyes rest on a starch-white box with raised, black letters that read “Samsung Galaxy S4” in a neatly bonded, yet delicate font. Inside was a flat, black screen, much larger than what I was used to at the time, surrounded by a deep blue outline. The simple and unexpected moments like this make you eager for what’s to come. In this case, what was to come was a completely new way of communication that a whole generation got to discover
The use of technology by people from all ages is inevitable in today’s society. The world depends on technology anywhere from the stock market to nuclear launch codes. Families use technology to enjoy a movie or a game, even to look up recipes for dinner and dessert. Presently, infant children are spending large portions of their days using technology. Today, television shows and games are easily accessed by children through computers and portable age-integrated devices. Introducing technology to a child as early as infancy produces a reliance that has to be maintained for the rest of their lives. The most common and current use of technology in today’s society is social media. Millions of people visit their social media accounts multiple times a day during work hours, school hours, and even while exercising. This constant craving offers a question: Does technology make it hard to concentrate? Some would argue yes it does, because technology has such a vast range of information it is very easy to get distracted when trying to look up something on the computer. A great example of this would be, looking up a song on YouTube, then thirty minutes later finding yourself watching a cat video with no awareness as to how you got there. Technology, with its vast amount of accessibility, has caused humans to lose concentration to an individual’s own detriment, in addition to making them less socially interactive.
Similar to the light bulb, the cell phone began as a modest product with a modest purpose, and underwent multiple, complex revisions to result in the current models manufactured today. If one examines the cell phone’s impact on our culture, it is evident that it has had both a positive and a negative impact on society. Without a doubt, the largest positive impact has been its ability to make day-to-day life less complicated, and ultimately, easier. Among a never-ending list of examples are: the ability to set reminders for appointments, meetings and important dates, an endless array of how-to and
Introduction para 2: Take your first cell phone you 've ever had and the cell phone you have right now. Compare them, how much have they changed? Cell phones were primarily used to
Today’s society is in uncharted grounds when it comes to the use of technology. Cell phones are one of the many ground breaking inventions that came out of this technological era society is in now. The technology of cell phones has come a long way since the first cell phone was made. Today they are much more than just a device to talk to someone. In 2007 the first smartphone was released which was the iPhone and in 2008 the first android was released which allowed people to have access to the internet and apps. Smartphones have revolutionized the cell phone industry and are what the majority of people use today. They have made life easier for people because of its capabilities. Cell phones have not only changed the way people are able to communicate but they have changed the way people communicate and have social interactions.
Technology has, since the primitive years, always been used to invent tools in order to solve problems. This would, in turn, simplify and make man’s life easier. Through advancements in the field, man has become more efficient on both the macro- and microscopic level. Anything nowadays can be attained with either the flip of a switch or a click of a mouse. One particular technology that came about in this time was the smartphone. Since 2008, the smartphone, a device that combines a normal cell phone with a computer, typically offering Internet access, data storage, e-mail capability, etc. all in your hand was deemed as ground-breaking technology and created one of the largest and most competitive market in terms of
Wealth. Despite the general overall wealth and quality of life within the United States, acquisition of technology is still limited by the mentality of those with and without disposable finances. People with income equal to greater than the “middle class” tend to view technology as a necessity (Cook, 2016). It is a tool without which they cannot accomplish their goals.
One hundred years ago, people used phones that were simply a tool to talk to another person. It was not used to take pictures, send messages or play games.People couldn’t imagine smartphone that allow peoplpe to search internet to get imformation.(qtd.Joe Butler)
With technology in the palm of our hands, why should we sit down and listen to boring reporters talk about an uninteresting topic that would not impact one’s life? As technology advances further convenience and opportunity for many are provided in the American society, however, more issues are developing as shown from Trump’s decision to end DACA known as the “Dreamers” while technology is becoming more complex. Generation Z, recognized for their technology involvement, has the ability to make a large impact on our society. With that being said, generation Z needs to engage in their local governments as much as they are involved in their cell phones. Local government makes the overall decision for their municipal district in order to maintain peace, order, and good governance. If generation Z including millennials want their voice to be heard, getting involved by voting and taking actions like peaceful protest allows their voice heard by their local government. In addition, the previous generations should adapt to generation Z’s environment by including technology and social media into their daily lives in order to not make the younger generations feel like a failure but instead get them interested and engaged in whats occurring in their world.
