Many teenagers are affected by their suicidal thoughts and actions. Although statistics show that only a small percentage of adolescents are invaded with serious suicidal tendencies and thoughts, some millions of lives are still at stake. Anxiety and depression can also be tastefully depicted in stories such as Catcher in the Rye. Stories where it shows the main character’s thought process and their slow deterioration. We need to help our adolescents in the community to make life easier for adults and teenagers

The idea of youth committing suicide mystifies our societal logic. We do not understand the reasons why youth -normally associated with energy, determination and possibilities- turn to such a final act as a solution. Suicide eventually enters all of our lives, either directly or indirectly. However, the situation becomes more cruel and unfair when a youth commits suicide. We can not help but think of the opportunities and potential lost so swiftly for one so young. Movies make teenage years appear to be glorious. You go to high school, you get on varsity, you get the girl of your dreams, and a car to match. However, that is a pronounced lie. Unlike TV, teenage years are full of self-discovery, heartache, stress, and plenty of mistakes. No teen, despite generation, has had a completely smooth transition from adolescence to adulthood. Teenagers stumble, lose their way, and fall down endlessly. The United States has seen a multitude of generations in its time. As a country, it has been through traumatic events such as the Civil War, the Great Depression, and 911. Such events only amplify the typical battles that teenagers face. Though the US is not currently in the middle of a crisis, it has produced a generation of Millennials with the infamous title of being the world’s laziest generation. So do modern teenagers have it too easy? Though some may argue Millennials are a corrupt and lazy generation, it is an unfair assessment since present-day teenagers face different battles than previous generations.

The issue of the high suicide rates in teens is an issue in many other countries, like Canada. In many provinces in Canada the suicide rate for males is 40 times the national average ( Recognizing Risk). This affects teenagers and definitely their parents. The loss of a young life affects the family and society for years, as they struggle to understand what happened (Recognizing Risk). It is very unfortunate that the risk of teenager suicide is so high. The family of the teenagers who follow through with suicide become emotionally ruined. For these families it is an everyday thing to wonder what type of adult their child would have became. Ethan, a teenager who failed his math test, almost took his life with a gun. He was scared of the wrath and disappointment his dad will show because of his grade. He was about to kill himself when his little sister, Grace, came home from school. Later, he decided to talk to his dad about how he almost ended his life. He realized that he almost threw his life away and that his dad loves him no matter what is happening. “Die” seems to be the solution to problems that teens try to use whenever they want to be relieved from a situation. Little do they know that dying can break the hearts of loved ones and can cause many problems. “Both the CDC and the National Mental Health Association (NMHA) point out that suicide rates for teens have tripled since 1960 -- making it the third leading cause of adolescent death and the second cause among college students” (americanthinker.com). Think of the number of teenagers lost because of their mental problems. Nearly every day, a family experiences the heartbreak of losing a loved one. Teenagers are killing themselves due to many reasons, but there is a way to help prevent it -

On Christmas Day 2014, a 15-year-old girl Sadie Walker, chose to end her life due to the depression. Sadie’s parents said they didn’t see any signs that shows Sadie was under depress. However, not long later they found out Sadie is died, they found out that Sadie have opened an Instagram account and post all her depressions in the Instagram. This fact shocked Sadie’s parents, but it was well known among Sadie’s classmates (Gordon). Sadie’s parents suggested that all young people should talk to the adults about their depress, in order to prevent the young people from suicide. However, it is not all young people’s faults to be feared to talk with their parents, there are certain things the parents did that make the young people don’t want to talk to their parents about their true feelings.

“Statistics reveal that in the US approximately...nearly one million people attempt suicide each year” ("Suicide Risk Among Abused Children."). Suicide is not an act of randomness. It is a result of prolonged feelings and/ or events, which push that person to extremes they desperately want out of. Suicide rates are amongst the highest in teens, due to their lack of support systems. During these years many are trying to find-out who they are and fit in, thus many get accepted into some people’s views, but there are also a good number that get ignored and feel like they do not belong anywhere. Teen suicide can be a result of a home-life of abuse or mistreatment, psychological disorders, and lack of social support-bullying; however, through the education on the warning signs of suicide, providing more emotional outlets at schools, and creating safer environments the number of annual victims can be decreased.

Suicide is something that is influenced by a multitude of factors. It is a complicated topic and is often overlooked, in fact it needs to be talked about and researched much more. The Virgin Suicides, by Jeffrey Eugenides, is a book about suicide and how it can affect not only the victims but also an entire town. In the book, five sisters commit suicide over time through the influence of many factors in their lives. The book presents how suicide can destroy a family and how it is something people need to be proactive about preventing. The Virgin Suicides accurately shows the factors that lead to suicide, demonstrating that these teenagers often feel they have no other choice due to parenting or the environment they were raised in.

Just imagine, waking up in the morning, then getting ready, get to school, then dismiss, going to work, then go home and sleep, wake up and do every one of the steps over and over. With teens, being high schoolers or college students, getting through their present school is very important toward their future and career. Although school is important, so is having a job. Jobs bring responsibilities and better yet, working at a job brings home money! Both going to school for all teens’ future and working at a job close to home is essential for every teen. The limbo between our long forgotten childhoods versus psuedo-adulthood is the arduous part of being a teenager. We burden the weight of double duty, spending seven hours a day at school, two hours doing homework, sometimes followed by a two hour practice or four to six hour job or a club meeting after school. Teenagers are constantly nagged at about deciding on our future; yet, are deemed unfit to talk about politics, economics, education; simultaneously, we are solidifying the next seventy years of our life with the clubs we join, college we choose, and connections we make. This is an act wherein you end your life due to personal issues that feel you cannot overcome. This is a Novel the describes the reactions of several teenaged boys that had to handle the death of their sisters. The boys saved some of the belongings and made several attempts to understand the reasons behind these girls suicide deaths.

Being Youthful, one now and again needs to confront difficulties; work, relations with boys/girls and family, Education, and attempting to discover one’s place in life, while making time for friends. This is not easy, and it does not get any easier when a young girl gets pregnant unintentionally or the fact that they want to.
