An education is an extremely vital part of anyone’s life, and a fundamental right. By law, the United States is required to provide an equal opportunity of education for all. Unfortunately, what they have to provide is mediocre at best. There are many problems and implications involving the American education system, causing it to be one of the most pressing issues that the United States is facing. The performance rate of schools in the United States compared to those in other countries speaks for itself. “Most of students of the American schools and colleges perform much below the average level. When compared with the students of 21 different industrialized countries, the twelfth graders of America ranks 19th in mathematics achievement and …show more content…
The “...‘absence of new funding at the federal and state level since the 1980s has led to decades of disinvestment in re-enrollment programs across the country’” (“‘High school dropouts…” NP). This lack of funding does not provide the students with the materials that they need to properly learn the information that they are being taught. One of the teachers at our own school, reported saying that for a total of twelve science teachers they were granted only $1500. That’s an estimated $125 per teacher, and assuming each teacher has about 125 students in total, if not more, that is only a dollar for each student. For such a hands-on and important subject such as science, the costs can add up quickly and could only allow each teacher to perform only a few labs with the amount they have been given to work with. More often than not, the little funding that it does have goes towards the wrong places. “The financial cost spent on the ‘thought to be necessary’ things like metal detectors and many such unnecessary advanced tools and systems, are very high” (“Problems in US…” NP). If the US could be wiser with its spending, then this country would go far in more areas than just education. Another finance related issue is the cost for colleges and universities in the United States. A college degree does not necessarily ensure job offers, yet it’s looked down upon not having one. The price to attend and graduate …show more content…
In the Finnish education system “the focus in education is on learning rather than testing...The only national examination... is held at the end of general upper secondary education” (“Education System” NP). To replace tests, they allow the teachers to be responsible for the assessment of each student’s achievements. This method also encourages students to self-assess their own work throughout the year in a way to improve themselves. The education in Finland is also at no cost, with the exceptions of books in higher levels and maybe adult education. Financial aid and grants are still available for any level of higher education (“Finnish Education in…” NP). This allows an equal access and opportunity for
I don’t get the education system. Science has proven, “the brain isn’t fully functioning until 10 am.” Studies have shown how the pressure to get into college and to do well in school have caused mental illness such as depression and anxiety. You don’t learn stuff unless you have enough sleep but it’s hard to do that when you have homework to do and tests to study for. The brain needs a break in order to fully comprehend things however the brain can’t do that if it’s overwhelmed. Many documentaries, books, and articles have stated how messed up the education system is and yet no one does anything about itt. Instead, it continues to get worse and people wonder why the rate of mental illness and suicide rises.
There was a time when America’s education system was top-notch according to the culture and society. With time, a myriad of things has changed, but unfortunately what has not evolved is the American education system. The country is still following a system which was not designed for the current global economic climate. Equality, as positive as it sounds is not as sufficient when it comes to education. The system treats students equally yet expect a similar culmination and outcome. Every child has his individuality and distinct abilities; one cannot judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree. Conversely, a few of the prominent reasons why the education system is failing are overcrowded schools, the rise of technology, and following the same old school hours.
America used to thrive on its education system and that is why it became one of the greatest nations in the world. Education is the backbone of our country, and we must give high priority to improve its current condition. Unfortunately, in the past couple of decades, the education system has been regressing. It has been on the decline and not as effective. The quality of education in a country has an influence on GDP growth, social cohesion and social well being in general. In order to improve the quality of education in the U.S., the following must be taken into consideration: the structure of our education system must be reanalyzed, we must compare and contrast our education system to systems of other countries with higher rankings, and finally, there must be a solution.
America is viewed as the most advanced and developed country in the world. It owns some of the largest businesses and companies known to man. It is on top of every new technological advancement that has touched the Earth. It is the country that boasts of having the best and most efficient military in the world. The list goes on and on. And although a lot these claims made by America is true, none can doubt that this country has its fair share of flaws. A flaw in the American system is the lack of education many people receive. I am making this claim because the number of people I see in the street that are poor. These people don’t have access to quality education which prevents them from getting jobs. In the essay, I will dissect this issue
Education in America is one of the most important issues that face our nation. If the education in America is not thought of one of most serious issues we face, our nation as a whole will fall. There are many debates and they seemly extend to all walks of life. The debates range from the decline in education, school vouchers, and the no child left behind law. As a nation, the United States is ranked above others. We must search for that solution to all of the pro’s and con’s in education. The solution should allow all walks of life to excel in the education realm. After all, the children of today will be the leaders of tomorrow.
Education plays important role in society. It determines the final development of an adult’s personality. In today’s society most jobs require a University degree. To receive a University degree students need to rely on a good education system. Does America provide this? The American education system has relied on the grade point average system for a long time. The problem with this is there is not a universal GPA grade point system varying from course to course. This creates an inaccurate way to determine ones overall achievements. Teachers have different standards than others, grade inflation can occur and students can be exposed to different learning environments. Does the education system need to change to create fairness?
The education system in America has a long history of struggle and change, as we have grown as a nation we have experienced an ever-increasing rise in diversity. This diversity has caused rigidities between groups and all stratus of society and has been a major impact in debates concerning the educational opportunities in America.
The United States of America used to be known as one of the greatest countries to be apart of. From the jobs to the economy to education people loved to be apart of the American culture. The problem many Americans are facing today is poor education. Since America is viewed as a high profile country many people have prominent expectations on what they are receiving, specifically the education. The fact is that there are major problems with all levels of the education system today. Starting with early education, teachers are quick to say children needs to be medicated or put into special education. Proceeding to the general or high school education where kids are graduating but not prepared for what’s after. Lastly how higher education or college can hardly be afforded in today’s society. As a result of the failing education system, many parents blame the child or society when in actuality the failing system is corrupted by some teachers, lack of preparation, and lack of affordability in higher education.
Education is a necessity across the globe, from America to Africa to China. Some education systems, however, are more successful than others and hold differing views and approaches to education. Culture greatly impacts education, which in turn impacts further opportunity. As unfair as it may be, a child’s cultural background largely determines their level of success. The American education system is lacking when compared to various other world cultures, and this is causing the socioeconomic gap to grow. Because of this inadequate education, more and more families are dipping beneath the poverty line. This could be due to poor discipline as well as the diversity of students. The diversity of the students results in a wide array of needs that are not being met by the public education system. This issue could be minimized by working to create a more inclusive academic environment to ensure equality and success.
In a progressively more globalized world that necessitates more effective educational practices, the U.S., once the biggest global force in education, has seen its dominance slowly slip out, and its educational status fall even lower than that of several third-world countries. The decline experienced in American school system academic achievement is not as a result of lack of funding, but as a consequence of the overall educational system watering down. According to Gatto, educating children through the existing public school system of America is crippling rather than helping them. From his essay, ‘Against School,’ it is established that the goal of the whole public school system is to limit people’s intelligence in an attempt to create a society that is manageable. Gatto continues to state that action is needed to change this situation. He supports his assertions using current and historical information about the American school system and his personal experience. After reading his article, one realizes that most of Gatto’s arguments are true. It is true that the American education system is making the students comfort to the government and society norms, which is why they are easily bored. This essay’s goal will, therefore, be to support John Gatto’s beliefs.
Lack of financing might be the reason U.S. understudies don't Exceed expectations in math and science, however I trust that is simply beginning to expose what's underneath.
The human mind is perhaps the greatest object on the earth, animate or inanimate, but without the proper training, the mind is a relatively useless tool. Through the development of formal education systems, humans as a whole have tried to ensure the training of all minds so as to continue prosperity for the world. Most of the time, though, education systems do not realize the harm they are doing to developing minds and the subsequent negative consequences. Among the largest of these inadequate education systems is the American primary schooling system. The American education system is in fact failing; it continues to deplete children of their natural creativity and thirst for knowledge while preaching conformity, which in turn creates an
Public education in the United States is perhaps one of the most critical issues we face as a nation. Once pronouncing the United States as a “nation at risk”, the educational institution began to implement one reform strategy after another. In efforts to improve schooling for K-12 students, education reform has fiddled with class size, revised graduation requirements, and created standardized testing just to name a few. Unfortunately, traditional public schools are still failing to provide students with a quality education. This is disheartening as we learn that the United States lags behind in math and science compared to our international counterparts. It is safe to say that educational reform has spent billions of dollars over the
We, as a society, cannot stress enough the role and importance of education in our life. Starting when we were young, we have come to believe that having a proper education can lead us to better opportunities later in life. Education is planted like a seed at a very young age, and like any seeds, I believe that it is best taken care of when it is still in the process of growing. Unfortunately, I believe that there are some policies in our educational system that need immediate attention to ensure that our future generation gets an effective and quality education. In 2012, the Program for International Student Assessment, also called PISA, was administered to 15 year olds in 65 countries. PISA is an international testing in math, science, and reading. According to the 2012 PISA result, the United States, once thought as “world leader”, scored a 29th place in math, 22nd place in science, and 19th place in reading (National Center for Education Statistics). These results show that we, as a society, need to enhance our educational system to catch up with other countries. Today, the kids go in and out of school, learning almost nothing but to memorize what the government expects them to know, learn how to take standardized testing, and graduate by exerting very little effort. To further improve our k12 educational system, we need to change our ways of teaching such as eliminating common core, stop analyzing
According to the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development, the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) rated the United States 24th out of 34 OECD countries (Programme for International Student Assessment Results from PISA, 2012). The PISA is designed to test 15-year-old students to determine if they can apply the skills and knowledge obtained in preceding educational years to real world situations; PISA scores demonstrate the student’s capability of participating in modern societies (Programme for
