The Apple Watch: A Case Study Part One: An Overview Apple has always been something of a trendsetter in the tech space. Its product history since Steve Jobs’s return in 1997 gives us a solid list of examples to choose from, from its very first iPod, to Apple’s PowerBook (and later MacBook) lines, to the iPhone and the iPad. Apple’s history is dominated by products that existed before Apple had a crack at them - but it was Apple who simplified them, made them appealing on a much wider scale, and ultimately made them objects of desire for the masses. The launch of the Apple Watch fits a similar mold. The concept of the “smartwatch” had existed long before Apple introduced it, from the very early forays of wearable manufacturers Fitbit and Pebble, to later Android Wear products like the Samsung Gear and the Motorola 360. But these products were never quite able to break out of a “niche” category. From a marketing standpoint, two main issues have always plagued smartwatches: 1. People (1) generally see the smartwatch as a complete replacement for the smartphone - and expect to do everything a smartphone can. Further compounding this problem are factors like low battery life and high prices, turning smartwatches into something that people see as wholly extra and unnecessary. 2. Smartwatches were seen as dorky and unfashionable, and the only people that would wear them, according to market perception (2), were die-hard Android enthusiasts and other wearable-focused
Today, consumers can buy wristbands that count steps and track sleep, athletic shoes that monitor fitness, watches that double as phones, and smart glasses that function as a computer or GPS. Fitbits and apple watches are two of the most popular wearable technology in 2016 (according to www.cnet.com).
This research proposal explores scholarly journals, internet articles, and my personal thoughts and ideas on the smartwatch, fitness band, and wearable market segment. I am proposing to obtain research on whether or not the Microsoft Band among other smart wrist wearables are currently and, if so, will continue to be desirable technological advancements in the market.
Product line options. Fitbit products are continuously evolving as they are finding new ways to offer what consumers desire from an individual product. By continuously adding new products with additional features, Fitbit is expanding their market demand from those who desire this product to track activity during specified periods, such as the gym, to a product that is used daily due to its fashionable look and appeal. This new effort has attracted consumers who prefer a more unique and modern look. Due to new designs, many consumers also feel comfortable using the product at various occasions outside of their physical activity.
They continue to talk on about how these wearables aren’t that practical and they won’t become popular any time soon. They say that people don’t want to wear these devices that they are ugly and that people who wear these devices aren’t necessarily the best people. “The Apple watch is the first to overcome the resistance” (Grossman, Vella). The Apple Watch has many features and apps already out and ready to be used. The whole thing is “intoxicating and also a bit disconcerting to have this much functionality perching on your wrist” (Grossman, Vella). They say that the pace that Apple moves products at is unnerving and there are unintended consequences. It gives the owner a vast source of access and information. The cheapest model of the new Apple WAtch is going for $349, and it already has loads of apps to use. It comes with abilities that make it even more useful, but, at the same time, invasive. The thing that Apple focuses on, and does a great job at doing, is the sleek and less showy design. The curved screen and small design makes it able
The Apple Watch is merely the latest piece of tech to make its way from the comic page to the real world.
Major companies from Reebok to Adidas to Apple jumped into the game with the smart watch. Wearable technology has caught on quickly with regular athletes; the Fitbit adorns the wrist of people as prevalently as Lance Armstrong’s live strong bracelets once did.
However, the rapid advancement of smartphone technology and app development was a threat to the company. In other words, smart-phone compatible wearable technology was on the horizon of FitBit’s impending doom. Competitive forces, such as the Apple Watch and various devices through AndroidWear, were beginning to tap into the wearable technology industry. This meant early FitBit products were going to be competitively outmatched by superior products.
The complete campaign of wearable is a bit over overestimated. We all came across the project of goggle glass which was eventually shutdown due to the unsustainable product idea. I believe that in the current scenario, the product might get some boost in its sales due to the brand name of Apple,
Branded watches have continuously been well-liked throughout the years and will still continue to be trendy in the years to come for the reason that after consumers buy into a brand, they reap countless benefits. With their knowledgeable purchasing routine, consumers continue to purchase in style brand watches for five important reasons.
This new product launch is new for the New Balance Company, but is not a new product being brought to the marketplace. This could be both advantageous and detrimental to the company. The advantage would include the ability to look at the successes and operations process of companies such as FitBit and Nike who have a similar product in the market. The challenge will be how to differentiate the product and gain market share that might already be taken from other companies. The company will be using the “American made” approach for this product launch with the company opening up their own U.S. manufacturing plants which will help promote the marketing as well as helping to boost the local economy by providing U.S. jobs. The ability to connect this smartwatch to other products, tracking steps on shoes, heart rate on athletic shirts, etc. will also provide a competitive advantage.
Jawbone and Apple are also major players in the fitness watch market. They offer similar products to a similar market. Apple products are top of the line when it comes to premium feel, customer service, and reputation. Apple's main products are the iPhone and iPad. They have been leaders in the market for a number of years. Apple already has a huge following, so with their introduction of their Apple Watch last year, they have a head start due to the number of customers that will jump from the iPhone to the watch simply because they are loyal to the brand and they buy every new product.
Challenging centuries of analog timekeeping, battery-driven quartz wristwatches hit the American marketplace in the early 1970s, though it seemed unlikely the expensive, new-fangled timekeepers would sell. Marketed as the "Next Big Thing" in cutting-edge technology, electronic watches, which were capable of far more precise timekeeping that mechanical ones, sold surprisingly well. They soon won over the buying
The article by Bertolucci also highlights that mass adoption of body adaptable wearable electronics is in the current times a key challenge. He attributes this problem to the current balkanization of the market. More specifically, Bertolucci notes that wearable electronics lack a common operating system. The current fragmentation prevents communication and interactions with similar devices and hence the inability to achieve mass adoption. He concludes the article by emphasizing on the need for proactive steps to be undertaken in order to ensure a smooth takeoff for these devices.
wristwatch has slowly become less of an object of function and more a piece of modern culture, for
I decided to write my case study about the smart watches, because this is a new expanding market and people do not know much about these devices. The smartwatch is a wearable computing device, that people wear it on their wrist. From outside it is similar to a wristwatch but from inside it is more like a smartphone. It provides a lot of features that we can do with a smartphone, we can connect these to gadget to each other in order to make our life easier. But when did these small devices started to extend?
