The Beginning Of The Revolutionary War

The topic of revolution is extremely subjective. What may appear as an insurrection to some might not be as extreme to others. When talking about the American Revolutionary War, however, the answer is clear. While the War certainly brought about change within the United States, it wasn’t necessarily very revolutionary. The most important aspects of the colonies, such as ideas about government, various types of societal equality, slavery and freed blacks, and the rights of women remained for the most part, unaffected.

The American Revolution was undeniably the most pivotal time period in respect to United States History, but who was really to blame for initiating the conflict? While both the British politicians and American colonists shared the blame for the kindling of the revolution, one party was certainly more at fault than the other: the British. Through short-term causes of taxation and incommodious trade acts, and long-term causes of salutary neglect and involvement in the burdensome French & Indian War, the British politicians proved to ultimately be the most responsible for igniting the Revolutionary War.

There are many elements to consider when discussing the establishment of the New England Colonies. For one, a number of English Puritans, in an organization called the Massachusetts Bay Company, decided to migrate to America, in hopes of a more favorable financial environment. In 1629, after much deliberation and an offer to pay out the original group of prospective settlers, only some of the Puritans agreed to travel to America, with an aspiration to concoct a Puritan sanctuary. A year later, they journeyed to New England with a charter from Charles I and with John Winthrop as their governor. The New England Puritans continued to be bound to their religious roots, but there were a few variations; the long-established worshipping practices that England maintained were not favored, and the notion of predestination spread. Over time, the Massachusetts Bay Company prospered, and it rapidly grew in size. Another important historical figure was named Anne Hutchinson, and she disputed matters regarding religion and women’s rights. Additionally, the Native Americans and the English settlers lived harmoniously and they assisted one another. Until, numerous wars occurred causing a rift between the two cultures. Some of these disturbances were called the Pequot War and King Phillip’s War.

In a time when the Columbus settled on, what is now America, land and created the Columbian exchange, which effected the New World and the Old World. After a couple of hundred years that's when the British colonized Virginia, naming it after King James. Jamestown's environment evoked the harsh living conditions and The Starving Time. The Starving Time was when colonist in Jamestown had no food, water, and no supplies. Population dropped from 300 colonist to only 60 colonist left. After this the English settled in the New World to search for gold and silver. Columbus encouraged more settlement, since he was from Spain. The Spanish came over and settled in the New World to spread and convert the spanish beliefs of catholicism to others. The similarities and differences between Spanish and New England colonies differed in terms of, role of religion, economic basis, and treatment of indigenous people.

The British did not use what little “fans” they did have to fight in the revolutionary war. The colonists immediately assumed that the war would be over quick with no problems they thought that the colonist would be no problem. What they did is they decided that they should capture Boston, it was a vital port for the colonists it would weaken the colonists, but after the battle of bunker hill they figured out that this strategy was no good. After the British lost the battle of Saratoga the colonist, who had no navy and untrained troops, started receiving help from foreign countries. It made them look more powerful and feared in the eyes of the British.

The battle of Trenton and Princeton began to erupt in the same year of the Revolutionary War. The Revolutionary War had started because the Americans wanted the same rights the as the British citizens had. The British refused to give Americans the same rights because they (British) didn’t think the Americans shouldn’t be represented as a part of the British Parliament, instead their (British) minds were more focused on building revenue. The British had ignored the Americans demands in which the British thought the Americans demands were a cause of outrage. In battling the British in the Revolutionary War, the American rebels did just as the great French military and political leader, Napoleon Bonaparte advised, “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake”. Though there were a great deal of missed opportunities and misguided actions taken by both sides of this war, none were as great as those by the ministers in London and British Generals Howe and Burgoyne. However, of these three, one held a great deal of responsibility for Britain’s failure to suppress the American rebels by 1777. This person was indeed, General Howe.

European nations came to the Americas to increase their wealth and broaden their influence over world affairs. The first permanent British colony was established in Jamestown in the Chesapeake Bay region by the Virginia Company. To honor the memory of Elizabeth I, the never married “Virgin Queen” the company’s directors named the region Virginia. (pg.41) The Jamestown colonist had a rough time of it. They were so busy looking for gold and other exportable resources that they could barely feed themselves. It wasn’t until 1616, that Virginia settlers learned how to farm tobacco. It became Virginia’s main source of revenue and helped the colony survive. The first African slaves arrived in Virginia in 1619.

The American Revolution is known as the war fought between American and Great Britain, for Americans freedom. The American Revolution is also commonly known as the American Revolutionary War, or the U.S War of Independence. The War itself only last a short eight years, it began in 1775 and ended in 1783, but tensions had been building up for centuries between the Great Britain and the colonies at the given time period.

The Daughters of the American Revolution was founded with the intent to preserve American history. However what was the rationale behind the need for an organization of this kind? Because the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) limited its membership to only descendants of participants in the war and created a focus on the importance of ancestry, leads the belief that there were another motivating factor behind an organization of this type. Influencing the founders of the D.A.R. was both the Civil War and the rising immigration to the United States. The Civil War ended with slaves becoming freemen and citizens, affecting the definition of citizenship. Also the war increase patriotic drive in the citizens which directly lead the forming of the patriotic group, The D.A.R. Immigration boomed during the nineteenth century and like the situation with freedmen changed the makeup of American citizenship. The D.A.R. was created as a reaction to theses social changes.

A motivating force behind the revolution was the American embrace of a political ideology called "republicanism", which was dominant in the colonies by 1775. The "country party" in Britain, whose critique of British government emphasized that corruption was to be feared, influenced American politicians. The commitment of most Americans to republican values and to their rights, helped bring about the American Revolution, as Britain was increasingly seen as hopelessly corrupt and hostile to American interests; it seemed to threaten to the established liberties that Americans enjoyed. The greatest threat to liberty was depicted as corruption. The colonists associated it with luxury and, especially, inherited aristocracy, which they condemned.

Settlements in the New World began with the arrival of Englishmen who settled in Indian territory along the coast of Virginia in the year 1607. The first settlement in the New World was called Jamestown. Thirteen years later, in a place called Plymouth, Pilgrims settled and began to build a colony much like Jamestown.
