The act of Serial murder and mass murder have similar characteristics, however they are not the same. Before they can be defined, it is necessary to first understand what exactly constitutes murder. According to the United States Code-section 1111, murder is defined as the unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought (FindLaw, 2014). With that said, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, “the term serial murder implies that there are at least three different murder events at three different locations, with a “cooling off” period between each event” (Ramsland, 2009). Individuals who perpetrate the crime of serial murder are referred to as serial killers. The term “serial killer” was coined in the

While serial murder has a definition that contains certain specific characteristics, there is no generic profile of a serial murderer. According to the FBI, each serial killer is individualized by their motivations for killing, method of operation, and behavior at the crime scene. However, lack of remorse or guilt, impulsivity, predatory behavior, the need for control, and sensation seeking are all common traits to most serial killers (Federal, 2005). Modus Operandi, commonly known as MO, is also a characteristic that may individualize one serial killer from another. The MO reflects what actions the killer performed to commit the crime in question. This includes everything from the ruse used to lure, type of restraint used, to the way that the killer actually consummates the murder. A serial killer’s MO can change, as he learns from his past mistakes and improves his tradecraft. On the other hand, a Signature is a discernable regularity that occurs at each crime scene event that can link a particular homicide to others. According to FBI profiler John Douglas, a signature, “is a ritual, something the subject does intentionally for emotional satisfaction -- something that isn’t necessary to perpetuate the crime” (John Douglas in Freeman, 2014). Some serial killers pose their victims in a certain way or leave them in a particular location after consummating the murder. Another form of signature may be the technique employed to
Although serial killers come in all shapes and sizes, there is a general profile that criminologists go by when trying to profile a criminal. The typical serial killer is a white male in his late 20s to early 30s, kills within his own race, his targeted victims share specific characteristics, and his method of murder is “hands on” in means of strangulation. The types of serial killers include visionaries, missionaries, lust killers, thrill killers, gain killers, and power seekers. Depending on the type of serial killer, their profile may change; for example, certain clues from missionary-type killers can help decide their religious affiliation. Also, certain types of serial killers may generally have different age groups. Most serial

There are 4 major typologies of serial murders. One type is referred to as visionary type. A visionary type serial killer murders due to pressure from delusions, hallucinations or visions. They exhibit extreme psychopathy and do not clean up their crime scene. They often report that they have committed the crime because voice in their head told them too. Another type is power and control serial killers, they tend to enjoy their victim’s suffering and torture. They often sexually abuse their victims, but they are not interested by feelings of desire. Mission orientated serial murders feel as through they are doing society a favor by murdering certain people such as prostitutes, drug dealers, or homosexuals, people they feel that society could do without. These murders are very seldom psychopathic. Last, but not least is known as trill-orientated motive type,
Mass murder can be described as a killing of three or more people at one time and one location. There can be many different types of mass murders like organized or unorganized or even family annihilators. Mass murderers have many different traits and features about themselves. Some of the traits that these mass murderers portray can be physical, emotional or even sexual. As for the motives to why mass murders happen, it is very hard to figure that out. There is so many different methods a mass murderer can use to complete his task. A mass murderer can use weapons, explosives, and even vehicles can be used. Mass murderers should get the maximum punishment for the crime they committed.

What is a mass murder? According to the FBI “mass murder was described as a number of murders (four or more) occurring during the same incident, with no distinctive time period between the murders. These events typically involved a single location, where the killer murdered a number of victims in an ongoing incident”(n/a, 2010). Anthony Sowell became a well-known serial killer in East Cleveland after his case became over publicized by media. Sowell was raised in a dysfunctional family, but after a failed attempted to escape he returned to old habits. Sowell lived a complicated life in a poverty-stricken time.
According to Wikipedia, serial killing could be defined as the unlawful encounters of more than two victims by the same person over a period of more than 30 days. It’s a term that American society has become quite familiar with. Basically a serial Killer’s motivation for assassinating is typically based on psychological satisfaction. Most people do not understand what causes a person wants to murder people without having a reason behind it, besides gaining such pleasure. In the past thirty years, there were numerous serial killers having all horrific and filthy ways to eliminate victims including raping, poisoning, burning, drinking their blood etc.
Though serial killer may have a fairly specific definition, there is no single precise profile for the serial killer. Each has a unique identity, set of motives and methods, and a unique psychopathology that would attempt to explain the mens rea, that is, the purpose or intent of the murder. “Psychological profiling is an investigative tool used strictly to answer the how of the crime, not the why” (Severence et al, 1992; Lanier and Henry, 1998). By examining the psychological make-up of the serial killer, it is often possible to explain the behavior, which might make it a useful tool in solving crimes.
This week I learned about different types of murders and murderers. I was especially interested in the various differences and similarities between mass murderers and serial killers. For example, mass murderers and serial killers have the same minimum number of victims, however the demographics of the victims are generally very different. A lot of the time we group mass and serial murderers together as deranged or even individuals but after delving deeper there are many general differences between mass and serial murderers including psychopathology, motives and choice of weapon(s).
To begin, serial killers are those who commit a series of murders usually without no motive during extended periods of times. In addition, serial killers are also known to commit their murders in a pattern. To society these people are usually referred to as “monsters”, and they believe that these kinds of individuals should be given the worse punishment. Not to mention, society has different opinions on whether serial killers should be given capital punishment or if they should be given a sentence to life in prison, without the possibility of parole. In my opinion, I believe that serial killers should not be given the death penalty. I believe that anyone who can commit murders obviously has mental problems. Serial
“The serial killer ‘is an entirely different criminal,’ ”The term serial killer is misleading on the ground that each murder is intended to be the last.” We see them as a figure of “the dark side of human potential,” but they believe they’re “on a heroic quest for the biggest score possible” They believe they are “the archetypal figure of impurity, the representative of a world which needs cleansing.” However, society knows that serial killers are not heroes, and they’re not cleansing the world. “The figure of the serial killer is violent impurity personified, and it is a construction that necessitates figures of violent purity to confront it.” While it can be argued whether having mental disorders should prevent a serial killer from being capitally punished, it is proven that many serial killers suffer from “paranoid schizophrenia, manic-depressive psychosis, or psychopathology.” It’s even said that “this crime is actually a form of disease. Its carriers are serial killers who suffer from a variety of crippling and eventually fatal symptoms, and its immediate victims are the people struck down seemingly at random by the disease carriers.” Serial killers usually have a stressor in their life that makes them start killing, and when they do “homicidal mania becomes ‘a necessity… linked to the very existence of a psychiatry which had made itself autonomous but needed thereafter to secure a basis for its intervention by gaining recognition as a component of public
The legal definition of a serial murder, as defined by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)(Morton & Hilts, Eds., 2006), in 2005 is, “[t]he unlawful killing of two or more victims by the same offender(s), in separate events" (p. 9). However, numerous people debate over the definition, including this researcher, because it lacks a cool-down period in between murders, which numerous professionals believe is necessary for serial killer status. The cool-down period is a short to extended amount of time between murders. This is what differentiates them from other killers such as mass murderers and spree killers. Despite this disagreement, serial killers remain a rare phenomenon. The FBI (2006) states, serial murder accounts for under one percent of the killings a year. Nevertheless, throughout the years, countless people have
