Many schools in America are divided by cities and districts which locks in certain students for specific schools. Some of these schools are well provided, and others are not due to the income of that district which the students live in. These borders for schools causes a problem in which certain educational tools and experience are restricted for those individuals who have a low income. The inadequate funding of schools for certain districts throughout America have been a problematic enforcement of disparity. This continues to promote the ideas of racism, segregation, and social class by isolating schools based off the income and having certain limitations due to ethnicity. In order to change the things for the better, we must bring awareness to this problem and work towards equal funding of schools. Mickelson and Smith state “There is a strong relationship between race and social class, and racial isolation is often an outgrowth of residential segregation and socioeconomic background” (Mickelson and smith 2011) Schools are one of the foundations in which society is formed through the gain of knowledge and experience. If we are simply segregating the distribution of certain knowledge due to the income of a person, we are restricting the right for a person to obtain equal knowledge. With the education system being constricted due to the income of the student’s family, they are unable to fulfill their grasp of knowledge in comparison to the schools of a wealthier district.
Education is an integral part of society, School helps children learn social norms as well as teach them to be successful adults. The school systems in United States, however are failing their students. In the world as a whole, the United States is quickly falling behind other countries in important math and reading scores. The United States ranked thirtieth in math on a global scale and twentieth in literacy. This is even more true in more urban, lower socio-economic areas in the United States. In West Trenton Central High School was only 83% proficiency in literacy and only 49% of the students were proficient in math. These school have lower test scores and high dropout rates. Many of these students come from minority backgrounds and are often form low income families. There are many issues surrounding these urban schools. There is a severe lack of proper funding in these districts, and much of the money they do receive is sanctioned for non-crucial things. Schools also need a certain level of individualization with their students, and in many urban classes, this simply does not happen. While there are many factors affecting the low performance of urban schools, the lack of proper funding and distribution of funds, the cultural divide between teachers and students in urban districts, along with the lack of individualization in urban classrooms are crucial factors to explain the poor performance in these districts. New York City consists of five boroughs, Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. The borough that I reside in is Brooklyn. Brooklyn has approximately 2.592 million people inhabiting this district and approximately 23.4 percent of individuals who reside in Brooklyn, NY come from a low-income household or in other words come from poverty. With catholic and private schools being expensive, people have to rely on the education system to provide their children with a good education. The inequalities that exist in schools today result from more than just poorly managed schools; they reflect the racial and socioeconomic inequities of society as a whole. Most of the problems of schools boil down to either racism in and outside the school or financial disparity between wealthy and poor school districts. School funding is a mix of different funding sources like federal, state, and local. About ninety percent of funding for education comes from state and local community. K-12 education has failed to keep up with high enrollment. Schools must spend to counter effects of poverty while many European countries alleviate these conditions through government spending. Currently more than forty percent of low income school get an extremely unfair share of state and local funds. Low income school are receiving inadequate funds for their school, whereas other schools in the United States are unfairly distributing their state and local funds. That is unfair to the low income schools because those schools really need the money for school books, field trips, etc. Funding for public schools has been quite unequal for years, but even though Americans are fully aware of this issue no one does anything to solve it. Nieto describes this as unequal access to learning through practices such as inflexible tracking and differentiated curriculum in different classroom and schools. When I first heard this term, it made me think about how neighborhood develop. In the cities I have traveled to I see how different areas of a town can lead to similar cultures and races forming together in specific areas. Many schools in the Unites States are far behind compared to other countries. School systems are corrupt in many ways causing the children who want to achieve in their academic goals fall behind. Parents are starting to fear about what school will live up to their standards of education. Unfortunately, students do not have a choice to be always put into private schools because of financial problems. Therefor, these students are then placed in their local public school that could or could not be succeeding academic standards.
