During the Age of Reason, Mary Wollstonecraft believed that “women must be allowed to be educated by the same pursuits as men” (Doc D). Aside from believing that women should be able to get the same education as men, Wollstonecraft also believed that if women were taught the same subjects as men, they will adjust quickly and become just as intelligent as men (Doc D). Women today are able to study the same subjects as men and are able to go into the same fields of study as men thanks to Wollstonecraft and many other women’s rights activists. The Age of Enlightenment was arguably one of the most defining eras in history regarding the transition of cultures from pre-modern traditions to current modern thought and philosophy. The Enlightenment came about through many intellectuals’ desires to separate from centuries old political and social traditions, such as absolutism and divine right. The movement advocated the use of reason rather than focusing on religion and began to break away from the bonds of religious tyranny, as well as long-standing notions of sovereignty. The Enlightenment was a time of change in Europe. There were many new ideas, and various influential thinkers that inspired new invention and also inspired revolutions. All of these thinkers had different views on people and government and different views of people and how they act. Many of these authoritative individuals thoughts still influence us even today. Many of their ideas are used in government and also as guidelines for people to live their lives by.

Throughout the Enlightenment, philosophes have made discoveries as well as have ideas that have revolutionized society as we know it today. The Enlightenment took place during the 17th and 18th century in Europe. During this period, philospohes, or philosophers, would discuss different questions and brought new, intellecutal ideas that brought out the Age of Reason. There is many different points of view of what the philosophes main idea was during the enlightenment. The main idea of the philosophes was greater individual freedom. This idea was a key part of their thinking in three areas: government, religion and women's rights.

The Enlightenment is said to have begun in the 1680’s, the same decade that the “Glorious Revolution” occurred, which crowned daughter of James II Mary and her husband Prince William of Orange Monarchs of England. This turning point in English history can be considered part of the Enlightenment due to the switch from an Absolute Monarchy to a Constitutional Monarchy and the passing of the English Bill of Rights in 1689 after William’s ascension to the throne.

The Enlightenment was a period in the eighteenth century where change in philosophy and cultural life took place in Europe. The movement started in France, and spread to Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Germany at more or less around the same time, the ideas starting with the most renowned thinkers and philosophers of the time and eventually being shared with the common people. The Enlightenment was a way of thinking that focused on the betterment of humanity by using logic and reason rather than irrationality and superstition. It was a way of thinking that showed skepticism in the face of religion, challenged the inequality between the kings and their people, and tried to establish a sound system of ethics. The enlightenment had a big impact on today's government and on us as people. For instance the bill of rights helped create and shape the laws that we have today. People have different views on things because of what they did when the country was just beginning. We have freedom to enjoy because of the ideas that were vocalized.

Americans in the Enlightenment period strongly connected themselves with the classical age in terms of how they approached their art. The Enlightenment period lasted for about 150 years, from approximately 1700 -1850. Throughout this time period many artists took inspiration from the classical age which occurred in ancient Greece and Rome hundreds of years before. We can see examples of this in buildings like The White house and Monticello in America, and Kedleston Hall in England. These three buildings, though located in very different parts of the world, all have a number of aestheticly similar attributes.

The Enlightenment was a time of great reform in ideas and knowledge. It was such an important part of history, that it took many people and many years to fully bring it into play. This time in life was all about change, such as the education of women, the separation of science and church, and the freedom to learn without government censorship. Someone people were on board with the movement, but others fought against the great ideals of Enlightenment. Although, it is sure that without the Enlightenment, our world would be very different today, and not in a good way.

During the time of the enlightenment period women were treated differently than men. Mary Wollstonecraft was a feminist who wrote books to enlighten people on the way women should be treated. In a vindication of the rights of woman Wollstonecraft wrote that “the only method of women to fulfill their peculiar duties is to free them from all restraint by allowing them to participate in the inherent rights of mankind”. The Age of Enlightenment was an era for the humanities and an understanding of human rights, Cesare Beccaria, a doctor in law, wanted to reform the justice and law system seeing them cruel and ineffective. He was also part of an intellectual circle called, “The Academy of Fists”, a group focused on the justice system reformation and also the economic and political reformation, formed by the two brothers Pietro and Alessandro Verri. Before the Enlightenment, France's government was too strong because it had too much power. During the Enlightenment, many philosophers helped improve France as a whole. One specific example would be Montesquieu. Montesquieu wrote books on many topics such as law, climate, forms of government, and religion. Also, he traveled and explored Europe to expand his knowledge and studied in an extensive learning program. His philosophy and writing had a great effect on France and the people living there at the time of the Enlightenment.
