The First Act Of Terror

September 11, 2001 (herein referred to as 9/11) was a day in American history, which will be remembered as the most horrific attack on American soil. This attack, carried out by nineteen Islamic extremists, was associated with al-Qaeda, and involved the hijacking of four airplanes. Two of those airplanes were hijacked and flown directly into the World Trade Center in New York City, New York. The third plane’s target was the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and the fourth plane was brought down in Pennsylvania where it is believed the passengers aboard fought the hijackers. This horrific day in history cost over 3,000 people their lives, and was labeled the worst attack on American soil since the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, two planes hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists crashed into the symbol of military and capitalism; the World Trade Center (History.com). This attack killed approximately 3,000 people (History.com). One other plane crashed into the Pentagon and 125 people lost their lives in that attack (History.com). That day, referred to as 9/11, left a stain in the hearts and minds of many Americans. These attacks brought out the hero in a great deal of people, but many heroes died on that day, and those heroes will never be forgotten. Because of this tragic event, millions of American citizens were injured or have had to endure the lasting effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (History.com). This awful event is our hope for the future because it taught us we need to combat terrorism better and we are still fighting this battle today (History.com).

On September 11, 2001 the World Trade Center buildings one and two were attacked. However, who we were attacked by and even if we were attacked is a hard decision to make. There have been many different claims about how everything on that fateful day happened. There are facts that we know are true, though; Flight 11 flew into the North Tower at eight forty- six in the morning. Soon after, Flight 175 attacked the South Tower. By the end of the day, both towers had collapsed and other hijacked flights had caused damage. The amount of lives lost on September 11 was substantial; 2,749 people from eighty-three different countries died from the attacks (Facts about the attacks…, n.d.). All in all, America was changed forever.

When asked about 9/11, many can recall exactly what they were doing when they heard the news that a plane crashed into one of the World Trade Center (WTC) buildings and many Americans can tell you how it all unfolded and the reason behind such a travesty. The attacks on the morning of September 11, 2001 left the American people in shock and awe. The attacks left nearly 3,000 people dead in New York, the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania including 343 firefighters and paramedics, 23 New York City police officers, and 37 Port Authority police officers (history.com, 2010). Most people had not seen firsthand the kind of devastation that was brought upon this nation in their lifetimes. The police, firefighters, and port authority officers of New York responded quickly in an effort to save as many lives as possible. Many of them lost their lives during the collapse of the World Trade Center buildings. What is not as frequently cited is the number of health concerns that still plague the thousands of first responders that tried to help the victims of the vicious attacks. According to the Center for Disease Control’s World Trade Center Health Program (2012), there are currently 32 conditions and injuries and 60 types of cancers that are currently covered by the program. This is a continually growing list of health hazards that still affect those responding to the call to assist in recovery efforts over 15 years later. Between 8:46 a.m. – 10:28 a.m. (EDT) two of the biggest skyscrapers of New York suffered a terrorist attack. The first plane was flown into the North Tower at the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan at 8:46AM. The people inside the South Tower were told to remain in the building and that they had nothing to worry about, a decision proven to be a bad one when a second plane hit the South Tower at 9:03AM. At 8:46 a.m., Eastern Standard Time, Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower. The impact killed all of the passengers and crew as well as hundreds inside the building. At 9:03 a.m., a second plane, Flight 175, crashed into the corner of the South Tower killing passenger, crew, and workers who worked on floors seventy-five to eighty-three. Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. killing approximately 185 individuals (History.com Staff). Because of the damaged to the support system, fires, and impact at extremely fast speed, the South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m. (Lipton and Glanz). Having heard about the acts of terrorism that had just taken place in New York and Washington, D.C., a group of passengers drove their plane, Flight 93, into a Pennsylvania field killing everyone on board but possibly saving hundreds of other lives in the process. The North Tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m. 102 minutes after being struck (History.com Staff). On September 11, 2001, almost twelve hundred people were wounded or killed by “coordinated suicide attempts” by Al Qaeda terrorists. In result to the four airplanes being hijacked and used for premediated reasons, the United States government instituted new regulations for entering the country and airport security as well as expounded on systems already in place.

That morning, nineteen hijackers boarded four different flights with the intention of crashing the hijacked aircrafts into politically and economically significant buildings in New York and Washington. At this very moment no one knew, or even suspected, that this might have been a terrorist attack and that this day and the following events would be engraved into people’s mind as a black day of the modern history. The situation escalated only 17 minutes later when at 9:03 the second hijacked plane United Airlines flight 175 crashed into the south tower.
