The film Babies takes a look at the development of four babies from four different cultures as they progress through their first year. The film does not try to answer if nature or nurture is more important to the development of these children. However, it does allow observers to explore the interaction between these two complex factors. Some aspects of the film were very similar between the four cultures. Many of these aspects would be traditionally associated with nature. The babies seemed to hit physical developmental milestones at very similar ages. They started sitting up, crawling, and eating foods at very similar times, at least as far as the film portrayed it. They even seemed to be showing some social milestones at similar times, such as making eye contact and using syllables that the caregivers seemed to understand or at least respond. Some aspects of the film were very different between the cultures. These aspects are traditionally associated with nurture. All of the children had very different struggles to overcome based on their access to various resources. However, they all managed to adapt. Additionally, I felt the more nurturing environments seemed to be further along in social and cognitive development. The American baby was using monosyllabic words and expressing her desires to her parents. The Namibian baby seemed to also be interacting well with her parents, but I did not understand the language so it was challenging to fully understand the relationship. Both of the other babies seemed to be more reluctant to interact with their adult caregivers. Nature was taking care of the physical development that typically isn’t affected by the environment.
