Many characters in the book The Giver and the book, Dreamland, are comparable. For example, Cassandra O’Koren from Dreamland and Jonas from The Giver have many similarities. However, they also have a few differences. Cassandra and Jonas are alike because they both ran away and they have the same personality. On the other hand, their physical traits aren’t the same and they have different living conditions. First, Both Cass and Jonas ran away for the same reason. They felt they weren’t free living where they were then. However, Cass felt tied down because of her parents, while Jonas felt this because of the community. Cass and Jonas are both very intelligent. Also, they both think deeply before saying anything so they don’t hurt anyone. On top of that, they both were very successful in their jobs/schoolwork. Jonas was selected as the Receiver of Memory, an assignment only wise people receive. “He has shown all of the qualities that a receiver must have… Intelligence… Integrity… Courage… The fourth essential attribute is wisdom.” (Lowry 60,61) Simaritily, Cass was accepted into Yale, which is an ivy league school. “ What she was, was student body president two years running, star right wing on the girls’ soccer team (State Champs her junior and senior year), and Homecoming Queen. She volunteered chopping vegetables at the homeless shelter for soup night every Thursday, had been skydiving twice, and was famous in our high school for staging the firing of a popular English teacher…” (Dessen 11) Many people were jealous of Cass’s and Jonas’s successfulness. Cass’s sister Caitlin always felt as if she was living in Cass’s shadow and that Cass was always the center of attention. Also, when Jonas was selected Asher was upset because all eyes were on Jonas. Lastly, they both worry often. For example, Cass worried what her life at Yale would be like (she made sure not to show these emotions) and Jonas worried about what assignment he would receive. “But it’s the ceremony I’m feeling apprehensive about.
