One way Jonas's personallity changed is the fact the fact highest grades in his school. This affected his personallity because he was smarter than most kids in the Community. Ecspecially since his community has accepted Sameness. Sameness is where everybody looks, sounds, Since Jonas has a higher intellect, he will soon be elected to the position as New Reciever. Which is a position that will replace the current Giver.

In the book “ The Giver “ written by Lois Lowry, the chapters 6 - 11 were fascinating , I could see that Jonas were changing very rapidly, he was an innocent child that never lied to anyone, who shared his dreams every morning with his family, but when Jonas turned 12 things started to change in his JAUNTY live. Jonas had to take the rules very seriously in his job,because if he didn’t respect the rules he might lose his job. Some of the rules that Jonas had to respect was that he could lie to everyone in the entire community even the family members, Jonas actually never but he has the opportunity now.

Jonas is the protagonist of the novel and a third-person narrator tells the entire story from Jonas perception of things. He is intelligent, curious, caring, and his thought process is very mature for being 11-13 years old. A good quote portraying both his matureness and his intellect is “If everything's the same, then there aren't any choices! I want to wake up in the morning and decide things”(97). This is also one of the first signs that he is displeased with the community. Another quote showing his courage and curiosity is "It hurt a lot," Jonas said, "but I'm glad you gave it to me. In the opening scene of the film Jonas was confused and questioning what his purpose was in the community he lived in. He says “It seemed everyone knew theirs already. Not me. I was lost. I always felt like I saw things differently. I saw things other people didn't. I never said anything. I didn't want to be different. Who would?.” This choice of words shows how Jonas was so unsure of himself and how terrified he was to stand out from the crowd. He was really against being different in any sort of way and didn’t know where he was heading. At the end of the film he knew what his purpose was, he knew what he needed to do and he was determined to fight for what was right, even if being different was part of it. “The memories back and back and back can be returned. I need to leave the community. I need to find the boundary of memory and then cross it. No more discussions. Gabriel is in danger. Something must be done!.” When Jonas’s says this the audience sees that standing up for what you believe in and having self motivation can lead you in the right direction. It illustrates that Jonas’s character is much stronger than anyone else. In society today many people don’t push themselves to their fullest abilities, Jonas teaches the audience that it is important to set yourself a goal and fulfill it no matter what. He accepts the role and begins training with The Giver. As time goes by, and he has received numerous memories, he starts to realise how cruel his society is. (SIP-A) In one of his later memories, we see The Giver pass on the memory of a rainbow. Jonas starts to learn about colors and vibrance. (STEWE-1) Jonas is first given the memory of a rainbow. “Days went by, and weeks. Jonas learned, through the memories, the names of colors; and now he began to see them all, in his ordinary life (though he knew it was ordinary no longer, and would never be again)” (Lowry 97). He felt good about what he was seeing, for a good amount of time at the least. (STEWE-2) But, Jonas starts to change his mind, and wonder why people don’t have color. A blue tunic, or a red one?’” (Lowry 97). Yes, Jonas does agree with The Giver after the fact that decisions can be dangerous. But, Jonas still likes the thought of decisions and colors. Originally, it only starts with him merely not taking his pills, which holds back his emotions. However, after the twin event, he and the Giver devises a plan for him to leave and expose emotions, memories, and color to the community once more. Jonas wants to have the Giver come with him, but the Giver refuses, stating that "it will be desperately hard for them," (page 156 - PDF) and that they panicked when it happened years ago with the previous Receiver, Rosemary. Not only has Jonas changed but he has also changed his community, in a good way. Jonas went from being a rule follower, obedient, careful and as the book goes on Jonas breaks the rules, feels, reckless and becomes an hero. We can all learn from this story though. Change is not a bad thing, change can affect our lives in good and bad ways. It depends on what change you choose for yourself. One example of Jonas’ character changing throughout The Giver is that Jonas was obedient at the beginning of the book but later becomes rebellious. An example of Jonas’ obedience is when a plane was flying over the community. The speaker advised everyone to drop their bikes where they were and sprint to the nearest building immediately. Jonas obediently did everything the speaker had said. Another time when Jonas was being obedient is when the Chief Elder said during the ceremony that he had always presented himself on time when he had chastisement. ” ‘We hoped, also, that Jonas would present himself promptly for chastisement, and he has always done so.’ “ (62) These are all times when Jonas was an obedient child and never questioned the community.

I know this because earlier on in the novel he would tell his parents every thing, but now that he is becoming more independent he can make his own choices about what he thinks and feels. In the begining, Jonas thought that his community was a safe and good place to be a part of. Jonas didn’t know that the society he lived in was so unrealistic at the beginning of the story, so, in a way, he changed because the memories allowed him to compare his community with the outside world and see it

His whole life he was taught not to lie and lying is bad but now he has a rule that says you may lie. "Jonas was stunned. What would happen to his friendships." (69). Now that Jonas can lie he doesn’t know what will happen to his relationships with his friends and family.(STEWE-2) Now he starts questioning if people have been lying to him his whole life and he isn’t sure if everyone has the rule that you can lie. He thought no one lied but since his community gives jobs like this, he isn’t sure if anything he has learned is true. "His parents did not lie. No one did. Unless...". He was shocked and confused on why he would get a rule saying that he may lie.(SIP-B) He starts asking bigger and more important questions about his society.(STEWE-1) Jonas starts questioning everything he has learned about elsewhere and release. “Do you mean not just us? Not just the community? Do you mean Elsewhere, too?" (78). He starts wondering if there is another community besides and feels like everything he has heard and learned has not been true. He starts to feel different and he starts to keep questioning his society.(STEWE-2) After he gets his first memory which is of snow, he starts wondering where is snow, why don’t we have snow and hills. "But what happened to those things? Snow, and the rest of it?" (83). After the giver tells him that it was all taken away by climate control and sameness.
