According to Jonathan Brennan, professor of English at Mission College, through A Different Mirror and the history of these people that helped shape American history, students can have a more accurate understanding of who they are and where they have come from. First and foremost, there are two particular chapters in this book that have greatly helped me in reaching these goals of a college curriculum. For instance, in chapter nine, called “The ‘Indian Question’,” Takaki addresses the terrifying acts that were placed upon the Indians. After reading this very unfamiliar and uncomfortable chapter, it has, in reality, greatly changed my thinking patterns. For example, I became completely shocked and horrified of all the cruelties that many different races did to each other, for they would brutally and mercilessly kill women, children, and even babies. One of the Indians who was in the midst of the chaos and catastrophe said, “My son who was two years old was shot in the mouth that later caused his death” (Takaki 230). As a result, I became very skeptical on what the English at that time were trying to accomplish, for they actually caused great harm and distress. I also was in the process of critical thinking because I just could not comprehend why the English took these bizarre and horrendous actions. I thought to

I have had a lifetime goal to attend college, it just didn’t happen early in life. When I first came to CCU, there was no doubt that getting my bachelors in early childhood would be my major. My passion has always been young children. It started when I babysat as a young teenager and has continued in my life as a preschool teacher. Education is constantly changing: therefore, I feel I need to have more knowledge and wisdom to be the best teacher possible. Education is by far one of the most important tools to have a successful life. With diligence, I want to be a leading educator and to be a gateway for my students to learn. It’s exhilarating how many lives a teacher will touch each day. A teacher has the power to reach out and make learning a positive and memorable experience for every child. Furthermore, teachers are one of the first caregivers for young children. Although I am not at the beginning of my career, while at CCU, I will grow in faith, help and learn from others, and strive to graduate with honors.

Andrew Delbanco’s essay “A college Education: What is its purpose?” gives three reasons why college still matters. Delbanco teaches at Columbia University, where he’s the director of American studies and has written several books on the meaning and benefits of college. Delbanco, begins his essay by discussing what college means to each individual student. He states, “For many more students, college means the anxious pursuit of marketable skills in overcrowded, under resourced institutions. For still others, it means traveling by night to a fluorescent office building or to a “virtual classroom” that only exists in cyberspace.” (1) Delbano successfully uses pathos to appeal to his audience’s emotions, his personal experience and anecdotal combine to persuade his readers to consider or realize the importance of receiving a college education, however his essay contains minor flaws that can counteract his claims.
