The purpose of the Gallipoli Campaign was completely sound and would have provided massive strategic advantage to the Allies if it succeeded. The idea behind the Gallipoli Campaign was to clear the bombs in the Dardanelles and allow the British and Russian ships to pass through. Constantinople would also be captured and Turkey would surrender, removing one of Germany’s most powerful allies. This would mean that the stalemate on the Western Front would be easier to break and thus the war could be won.

The major Battle of Fromelles was also a great struggle for Australian soldiers as their enemies held higher grounds where possible, and there was little experience in working the artillery fire as it was the first ever battle for the AIF (Australian Imperial Force). Additionally, the Australian troops were placed majoritively on the front line at all times by the British. This accounted for the large number of losses and sacrifices of the ANZACs at the Western Front battles compared to the soldiers of other nations who also fought alongside the British. On 25 April 1915, during the First World War, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed on the Gallipoli peninsula as part of the 70,000 strong Anglo-French operation against Turkey to capture the Dardanelles. Over one million men were involved in the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign which lasted eight and a half months. Of the 44,070 soldiers who were killed during the campaign, 8,000 were Australian. It was the first time that Australians went into combat as Australians, giving Australia a sense of identity and a place in the world.

Turkey was on the same side as Germany in the First World War, which made them the Anzac's rival. It was decided that soldiers needed to land and fight in Turkey.
