The time from September 1, 1939-September 2, 1945, during WWII, was a very miserable time. This time in history is known as the Holocaust, when the monstrous Nazis treated the innocent Jewish people worse than they would treat animals or slaves. In the poem, The Little Polish Boy Standing With His Arms Up, by Peter L. Fischl, the author informs the reader that the world should have seen the horrible and dehumanizing behavior of the Nazis and their Nazi machine gun bullets. In the poem, the little Polish boy represents all of the Jews that were being held concentration camps and those that had to endure the severe brutality and torture from the Nazis. In order to draw attention to the inhumanity of the German society at that time, Fischl advises the reader that he would paint a picture, “A painting so bright to blind the eyes of the world” (Stanza 11) to remember the little Polish boy. The novel states how the prisoners had very little or no clothes. They did get shoes, however the Nazis uncompationently gave them the worn, bad quality pairs, while the new, better quality shoes were given to Germany. The innocent Jews still got fed by the Nazis, but only if they worked. There was a high percentage deaths if you were sent to the concentration camps. In the 1930’s and 1940’s, innocent people were living in horrendous fear at all times. Yolen gets her point across by writing a compassionate novel using a honorable, sympathetic tone. Yolen speaks of her personal experience with strong, and firm vocabulary. Yolen informs us about the Jewish traditions. She uses repetitive language to reinforce the importance of the point shes making. She shows us how innocent the Jews were during that time by honoring and remembering the
