The Manifest Destiny in terms of our country means the 19th-century doctrine or belief that the expansion of the US throughout the American continents was both justified and inevitable. It was the attitude towards the American expansion, that the United States not only could but was destined to stretch from coast to coast. There are many components of the Manifest Destiny, those components individually created separate reasons to conquer new land. Yet they came together to exemplified Americans need to dominate from pole to pole. The darker side of the Manifest Destiny is the belief that the white man had the right to destroy anything and anyone. “The End of Retirement” is a story that illustrates the dark side of the Manifest Destiny and the search for more. In the story, the author follows the protagonist named Linda May, a sixty year-old former cocktail waitress, Home Depot clerk, and general contractor.

“The End of Retirement” mentioned before is a story about somebody of the name Linda May. The author is overlooking the older generation of people from the ages sixty and up. These people called “workampers” are people who hit the bottom of the bottom. They are very poor and social security checks can’t help them live stable. They are the generation who couldn’t afford to retire. They travel across the country to find seasonal jobs to live. They are working till they end up in a coffin. These “workampers” live in RV's, in little communities close to their job. They take their life wherever they have to work and sacrifice all their time just to make a minimum living. These people face many hardships, and just want to get joy out of life. The older generation is in a search for more, a better life. The Manifest Destiny has caused them to have this life, and caused them to become greedy for joy.

In the story. “The End of Retirement” there are many conditions described in the lives of the “workampers”. Throughout the story it describes the nomads as a community, they are brought together in a certain way. People from the age sixty and up traveled frequently in groups to different seasonal jobs. Communal life is belonging to a community of people, shared or participated in public. In the story
