The Medicine Bag Story

Art Beaumont, the newly hired president of MediSys Corp, created a core team in August 2008 in order to accelerate the IntensCare project. Team consisted technically competent employee in six areas: research and development, engineering, software design, production, marketing and regulatory affairs. Jack Fogel, a senior production manager was assigned the project leader. IntensCare project was very important to the success of Medisys but the team had very tight schedule. However, differences started to emerge soon after which obfuscated the future of IntensCare project.

Beginning with “The Medicine Bag” , the main character is Martin. His Grandpa, who is an Indian on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, came to visit him and his family. When Martin's sister, Cheryl, saw their grandpa, she got extremely excited and couldn't wait for her friends to come and meet him. Martin on the other hand was not too excited. He

Family, traditions, and rituals are what these rites of passage are about. The medicine bag is a short story about a young boy named Martin whose Grandpa visits him from his Lakota Indian reservation. He comes to carry on a tradition by giving Martin the Medicine bag, which is hard for Martin to accept at first. In the Apache girl video, Dachina is a young girl who is completing her traditional ritual on the path to becoming a woman. These two stories are both similar and different in many ways, and they also have their advantages and disadvantages when comparing the text to the video.

The last and final difference between “the Medicine bag” and the apaches girls rite of passageis that one is for the growth of girls and the other for boys. As said many time, the Apache celebrate the growth of girls and welcmoning them into woman hood.While in the Medicine bag, Gfrandpa clearly states the the bag is to be passed onto the oldest male in the famly, which makes sence ,maturity wise.

Although the themes were simlilar, the authors perspective on the topic differ.Beryl Markham thinks that a rite of passage has to be proven to other people. Doris Lessing disagrees. Her thought on the topic is that for it to be a rite of passage it just hasto be proven to yourself. As long as you know you achieved your goal, then its considered a right of passage. I agree with Lessing, because I feel as long as you know you did itthen, no one can tell you otherwise. You don't have to prove to anyone anything.

The short story “The Medicine Bag” by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve and the video Apache Girl’s Rite of Passage by National Geographic have many differences and similarities to introduce the reader to Native American rites of passage. The most significant difference is that the short story emphasizes the emotional struggle of Martin, while the video shows the physical struggle of Dachina Cochise. This can be shown in the short story when it states, “’Thank you, Grandpa.’ I said softly...Two weeks later, I stood alone on the lonely prairie of the reservation and put the sacred sage in my medicine bag.”(Sneve 78, 79) In contrast, the video shows, “These four days mean little sleep, scant food, and the need to set aside emotion. Throughout the ordeal, she must wear a face of stoic resolve.”(National Geographic) At this point in the short story, Martin successfully receives and inherits the medicine bag from his Grandpa and goes to the reservation to put the sacred sage in the medicine bag, signifying that he is the new bearer. As shown from the video quote, Dachina Cochise is starting her trials, but she has to go with little food or sleep and keep a straight face the whole time. This proves that the type of journey they go through makes a big difference in the purpose and meaning of the story. A rite of passage is defined as a ceremony marking a significant transition or an important event or achievement, both regarded as having great meaning in lives of individuals. In Sharon Olds' moving poem "Rite of Passage", these definitions are illustrated in the lives of a mother and her seven-year-old son. The seriousness and significance of these events are represented in the author's tone, which undergoes many of its own changes as the poem progresses.

Alas, O’Brien writes that Martha stated, “It was this separate-but-together quality, she wrote, that had inspired her to pick up the pebble and to carry it in her breast pocket for several days, where it seemed weightless, and then to send it through the mail, by air, as a token of her truest feelings for him”

A rite of passage is a transition from one stage of life to another. These passages are pursued when one passes a milestone such as birth, maturity, and achieving adulthood. These milestones will clearly show changes in the characters life. It involves significant change in their views, and of society. A rite of passage is shown in Anthem, Shakespeare Bats Cleanup, and Great Expectations. The characters show significant changes as they transition through their life..

Originally developed by anthropologist Arnold van Gennep in the early 20th century in his book Rites de Passage, the term liminality refers to the concept in which participants are in the threshold stage of disorientation and suspension from the previous social norm that they were used to. When an individual goes through a rite of passage—also coined by van Gennep—he is cut off from his “old life” and is born again into a new person. In the apache tribe and lakota tribe, both the young adults have to go through a certain ritual to become an adult in their tribe. They also have some challenges and obstacles to go through, involving physical and emotional. In the story ‘The Medicine Bag”, Martin receives a medicine bag before his grandfather passes away. After his grandfather passed away, Martin follows his grandfather’s instructions to carry on the medicine bag. Martin had only one day to prepare to receive the medicine bag, and it was very tough for him because he knew his grandfather would soon pass away. The apache girl goes through many physical challenges during her rite of passage. She has to dance for ten hours, endure four days with little food and sleep, and

Firstly, Merciad Eliade proclaimed the term rites of passage, in Unit One, as a term marking the transitional period in a person’s life as a very important aspect of their religion. While a rite of passage takes place, a person within a culture is given a new role and new responsibilities. Eliade states his opinion of the term rites of passage, as it “...implies a radical change in ontological and social status.” (Eliade, 184) When in comparison with Turner’s interpretation of rites of passage, defining “...rites of passage as ‘rites which accompany every change of place, state, social position and age,”’ (Turner, 512) Eliade and Turner’s interpretation of rites of passage correlate as they both imply a current change in one’s life. Throughout many works of literature, characters are described to go through a rite of passage, developing the plot and solving conflicts. A rite of passage is when a character goes through life changes, realizing his/her flaws and maturing as a person. Walter Lee Younger is a man that goes through many different character changes, which cause conflict amongst the other characters. Once he goes through his rite of passage, he is able to fix his flaws and mature. In Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun, characterization is used to portray that one must experience a rite of passage in order to mature.

In the two short stories “The Medicine Bag”  written by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve and “Who are you Today Maria” written by Judith Ortiz Cofer, the two characters have plenty of similarities and differences. In “The Medicine Bag”, a boy named Martin indulges in his Native American culture and grows closers to his Grandfather. Before even receiving the precious Medicine Bag, Martin feels self conscious with his heritage but then learns to somewhat embrace it. In “Who are you Today Maria” a girl goes through a closet and assembles an outfit that embodies her family. Maria’s teacher gives her classmates a decision to dress as a poem or a joke; and she chose to dress as a poem. Both stories have a manifold of similarities and differences involving  relationships with grandparents, attitudes towards culture, and how the character’s environment affects their sentiment.
