Frightful Fate An anonymous author once said, “Be careful what you wish for, you may receive it.” The Monkey's Paw is an unnerving and frightful short story because of the realistic idea of fate's consistent consequences, the unnaturally natural way the wishes come true, and the surprisingly fearful stress of being able to make anything happen. The strangeness that thrives in this story literally proves it “creepy”. Although little has been studied for the type of fear that is terror (creepiness), the principles behind are prevalent in The Monkey’s Paw. Fate, being determined, would seem comforting and decided, but if a supernatural type of power is added upon fate things truly become frightening. Wishing is a dominant theme in the story, …show more content…
I wish that I could be rich, that I had this car, that I could go to India, that I could be a billionaire… Don’t these all sound fine and innocent to wish? The big and important lesson that is found in The Monkey’s Paw is the evils of wishes. Wishes, throughout history and literature have something to do with magic, showing that they are unreal and seem to come from nothing when they come true. When we wish for something we do not think, “I will go and work for this until I have it” but we sit there and think, doing nothing. We hope that chance will somehow magically give us what we want. If wishes came true, the ideas of W. W. Jacobs on this topic would surround us. Wishing is fruitless, and if it did bear fruit it would only be able to work through realistic ways. It boils down to this, magic is not real, and if there is any type of fate it works through the laws of nature. Wishes do not come true, if they do it is because work is done to accomplish them. The definition of wish is to “want something that cannot or probably will not happen,” so why wish but to make oneself miserable? If magic and fate worked together it would make wishes come true, through the most horrific and sensible ways

The story “The Monkey's Paw” by W.W. Jacob talks about a family who got a chance to make wishes but things turned against their expectations. It elaborates more on decision making since the decision one makes shapes the kind of future one has. By choosing money, Mr. White loses his boy Herbert meaning that according to the talisman. To get one thing then you have to forego another. The hunger for riches makes the Whites forego something they later regretted. Money did not bring joy to the family as they had expected and they started wishing for their boy to return. In the development of the story, Jacob uses literary elements that help in bringing out the aesthetic feature of the story.
The mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) is a primate of the Old World monkey (Cercopithecoidea) family. It is one of two species assigned to the genus Mandrillus, along with the drill. Both the mandrill and the drill were once classified as baboons in the genus Papio, but they now have their own genus, Mandrillus.
The author is relaying that message by making the wishes come true but only in a sometimes savage and brutal manner. It stated in the story that the Sgt. Major told Mr. White that the man that put the curse on the paw also said that fate rules people's lives and those who interfere with their future outcome do so to their sorrow. He told Mr. White this as a deterrent. However Mr. White did not listen to him because he was so uneducated and did not know what would happen if he wished upon the monkeys'

Have you ever dreamed of being able to obtain everything you wish for or have a good luck charm that will help you get everything you have dreamed of? There is a famous saying: “Be careful what you wish for”. In the story “The Monkey’s Paw”, by W.W. Jacobs, this saying is very well represented in the plot and in the characters. The family constantly wished for things that at the end, don’t turn out to be what they expected. “The Monkey’s Paw” revolves around a real monkey paw, which the family believed had magical powers.
There are many similarities between the two short stories "The Third Wish" and "The Monkey 's Paw". One major similarity they share is their overall mood. The mood both stories share is the feeling of mystery. Mystery is shown in "The Monkey,s Paw" when the Sergeant major first told the White family about the monkey 's paw, and it 's magical powers. The author writes "monkeys paw? ' Said mrs. White curiously. 'Well, it 's just a bit of what you might call magic, perhaps ' said the sergeant major offhandedly". This quote shows the mystery in "The Monkey 's Paw" because to most people magic is quite a big mystery. Some people believe it is real and some do not. Others don 't know what to believe because magic is not a thing that you can see, or prove to be real. Mystery can also be felt in the mood of "The Third Wish". A good example of when mystery is displayed is at the very beginning of the story. mr. Peters had just gotten out of his car and was starting to search for the unknown creature that was making distressed sounds "He stood a moment waiting to try and discover where the noise was coming from,
In "The Monkey's Paw”, author William Jacobs conveys the message that fate rules peoples' lives, and that those who try to interfere with fate do so at their own peril. This premise is clearly shown as the plot of this clever story unfolds. Sergeant Morris reluctantly gave Mr. White the monkey's paw, but warned him of the consequences. The White family playfully wished for two hundred pounds and when nothing happened immediately, they dismissed the sergeant's story as a fairy tale. However, the events of the next day show the cruel irony of the wish. A man from the company that the son, Herbert, worked for, arrived at the White's House with the terrible news that Herbert had been killed in an accident on the job. The man went on to say that
One reason someone should be careful for what they wish for is they could end up with something they didn’t actually want. If someone were to wish they had one million dollars, they might start to brag and lose all of their friends. This is important because if someone were to do that they would be very unhappy with them self and be disappointed that they ever wished for what they wished for. Like in the story Third Wish, Mr.Peters wished for a wife and his
I think that having a pet monkey isn't the best pet because they're noisy they break stuff they also eat bugs. They also are too big. The monkey will probably climb around and break stuff. I think a monkey will not be fun because they move around too much an also they play too much an also they play too much an also can get lost. But if I did have a pet monkey it will be pretty cool I will feed it bugs, bananas, and berries. We will play together will play hid and go see and tag. I know monkeys are curious we'll go on trips together and climb trees and swing on vines together. I think having a pet monkey will good around the house because its feet is like hands so it can pick up things that are not supposed to be there. I think having a pet
Could you turn down three wishes? Can you take advice from those who came before you? Do you know there are always consequences for every action?
To begin with, the most predominant feeling in the story is the feeling of uncertainty, the doubt for coincidence. Elements such as the death of Herbert and the knocks on the door after wishing for the boy to be alive, can be easily explain as "just coincidences"; there is nothing in the narration itself that can lead the reader to assume that those elements were due to supernatural powers. By taking coincidence as a solution to the stated dilemmas, "The Monkey's Paw" becomes immediately uncanny. Though we face an important feature in this story which is the power the reader has so as to decide what actually happened, the story would not achieve the uncanniness if it weren't for the feeling of fear that are produced by hesitation. In other words, the feelings which are produced by the story before coming to the conclusion that everything happens because of coincidence are a determining fact for "The Monkey's Paw" to be uncanny. For example, almost at the end of this story, the reader faces see a desperate Mrs. White

In the short story “The Monkey’s Paw” the main character, Mr. White obtains monkey’s paw, knowing that it will only bring bad luck, but refuses to listen because he is greedy and wants more than, a house, a loving wife, and family. Before obtaining the monkey’s paw, Mr. White was warned by sergeant-major Morris. “It had a spell put on it by an old fakir,” said sergeant-major, “a very holy man. He wanted to show that fate ruled people’s lives, and that those who interfered with it did so to their sorrow. He put a spell on it so that three separate men could each have three wishes from it.” (Jacobs 2). After saying this sergeant-major Morris threw the monkey’s paw into the fire. Mr. White was horrified by his actions and could not believe that he did not pass it on to another man to use the three wishes. Mr. White's first greedy wish was for 200 pounds, but at the compensation of their dead son, Herbert. Mr. and Mrs. White’s second greedy wish was to bring Herbert back to life, only for his dis mangled corpse to return to the house. “For God’s sake, don’t let it in,” (Jacobs 6). At that moment Mr. White realized that his son would not come back to be what he was before the accident. Mr. White was looking for the paw, while his wife was trying to let the knock come in. He found the paw as the door was opening and he made his last and final wish. At this time we can only conclude that
