"The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell is a story about a man named Rainsford, who is an experience game hunter, that fell off a boat and swam to an island. There he meets General Zaroff, also a hunter, and his companion Ivan. But General Zaroff is not your normal game hunter. He doesn't hunt animals. What he hunts are humans. At first, he wants Rainsford to join him in his hunts. When Rainsford refuses, Zaroff decides to hunt him instead. So, he must fight to stay alive for three days, which is the span of the General's rules. He uses the same instinctive behavior of any hunted animals. Rainsford is given only a knife and has little knowledge of the island. He is up against a man who has guns, trained dogs, and knows the island. In the end, Rainsford is outsmarted General Zaroff by making him think he committed suicide, then returns to kill General Zaroff in his bedroom. This story shows a whole different side of humanity and just how different and alike the characters are. But what exactly is the most dangerous game? One could argue that it refers to the hunt itself, while another could say it is what's being hunted. "The Most Dangerous Game" shows a side of humanity that a person does not normally see. When faced with death, even a human's basic instincts are to survive. It all comes down to kill or be killed. The theme of this story is murder, violence, and cruelty.
