Distressing natural disasters, such as hurricane Irma have devastated the world and caused loss of homes, as well as greatly affecting humanity. According to French Prime Minister, Edouard Philippe of St. Martin, “95 percent of the island’s houses had been damaged and 60 percent were uninhabitable. Earlier, France's interior minister said at least eight people had died.” This devastating hurricane is one of the many examples of how extreme natural disasters negatively impact the world and how dominant Mother Nature is over humanity. Natural Disasters are an incidence throughout the world that is inevitable and impossible to control. Humans may believe Mother Nature can be controlled through technology and the newest inventions, but natural disasters dominate all of mankind. Humanity is continuously, to a great extent, devastated by terrible unavoidable disasters that shape the world. One of the many terrifying natural disasters that are common on the planet is earthquakes. An earthquake is a sudden, violent shaking of the ground, frequently causing great destruction. Often it is difficult for people to rebuild their lives after being affected by a destructive underground eruption. The cost to rebuild housing and replace material possessions is tremendous, especially when a family or country can’t afford to replace lost possessions. When a poor country is struck by a devastating disaster, such as an earthquake, their quality of life is greatly changed negatively due to low
A natural disaster has the capability to cause large scale damage and destruction to an area. Seismic events have been known to alter landscapes and affect the livelihoods, health and development of communities. No two earthquake events are the same and the level of threat posed by an earthquake can vary due to both the human and physical factors of an area. The 2010 magnitude - 7.0 earthquake that occurred in Haiti is an example of where a natural disaster caused a previously vulnerable area to suffer tremendous loss and debilitating socio-economic impacts, to an already poverty-stricken nation.
While I have listed many natural disasters that one would need to prepare for, what about the government failing. Many citizens feel that the government is encroaching on our fundamental rights as Americans. Take for example Jade Helm 15, a military training exercise. While the government is telling us it’s just an exercise so that the everyday citizen can get used to the presence of military in their neighborhoods and in their towns, is that really what’s going on? Or is this just another ploy to have the government take over the American citizens and it turn into another Hitler debacle? Some groups suggest that this is a ruse to implement Martial Law on the citizens. On the other hand though there has been a lot of small terrorist attacks on military bases lately so having the presence of military in the communities might just be a preemptive measure of what’s to come. “The cause of the underlying concerns is that we see instances, like a shooting in Fort Hood by a terrorist, that the President labels workplace violence. We see the President come to the border in Texas and say it’s safer than it’s ever been,” Abbott told Austin-based NBC affiliate KXAN-TV. “And so I think it was a misplaced perception by people in Texas who have problems with the Obama administration and connected that trust with the Obama administration to the military” (Viser). This should be a concern of American. We should be preparing for government fall out, or even something that is happening
Critical incidents require immediate action (Levinson & Granot, 2002). Additionally, they also require ongoing support in order to ensure that they are correctly managed and the long-term effects are mitigated (Schneid & Collins, 2001). Addressed here are four specific events - earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and tornados. There are ways to mitigate the damage of these events, and there are also ways to try to prepare for them. Additionally, the type of response to these events is important as is the recovery from them. For earthquakes, mitigation is limited. It is possible to build houses and buildings stronger and more able to withstand shaking, and in earthquake-prone areas the cabinets often have latches and large appliances are strapped to the wall (U.S., 2007). People who live there should also have emergency supplies of food and water, and should be prepared for an earthquake by knowing information about evacuation routes (U.S., 2007). The response to earthquakes and the recovery from them are usually strong, because the areas that are most prone are also most prepared. When an earthquake hits in an unusual area, however, it can take much longer to help people and to rebuild the infrastructure.
With the current changes in weather patterns, strange climatic conditions and other uncontrollable natural disasters, there has been a lot of attention directed towards the mitigation of the negative effects such natural disasters can have on man and the society at large.
“We’ve never seen anything like this” is the word increasingly heard in every part of the world in the wake of natural disasters. Certainly, strong natural disasters have increased nearly four times over the past four decades. There have been observed 70% increase in damage by floods and streams. According to recent UN report, Economic losses from disasters since 2000 are in range of $2.5 trillion, almost 50% higher than previous international estimates. The economic losses from disaster sometimes occur out of control and require partnership with private sector. The losses from earthquake and cyclonic wind damage are expected to be about $180 billion per year throughout this century- and this figure doesn’t include damage from floods, rockslides,
There was a family early in the morning at 9ish there was a big black cloud coming towards they all huddled in the middle of the room. They got wet towels and covered there mouth and cracks in the door and windows. When they looked at the black cloud they saw birds flying away and animals running away from the cloud. It was total darkness and there small house was getting hit with dirt really hard. They were in the middle of the room till the sandstorm ended. This happened to a lot of people in different places they were most common in Texas, Kansas, New Mexico and colorado they were hit with hundreds of storms. These big storms are one of the biggest natural disasters in America's history. These big storm threatened so many people of the population.
Natural disasters are a phenomenon that cannot be prevented and when it comes to natural disasters is something that is hard to prepare for. These two things have nothing but negative affects towards people and especially the economy, it affects the economy tremendously. The three disasters that are going to be looked at is Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Katrina, and the Tohoku earthquake. These three disasters all had negative affects towards the economy. Three major things that happened when these disasters hit was money loss, especially the business that were uninsured, jobs being lost, and companies that had to close down production
The Earth can be characterized by its unknown natural phenomenon There are different types of natural hazards that can happen, from Tsunamis, earthquakes, landslides ect. For instance, earthquakes are natural disasters that are characterized by vibrations and shaking within the ground, some earthquakes have the potential to become deadly. These quakes are among a number of natural disasters that can happen without warning. Earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides are some of these dangers that can vary in magnitude and size, from small, barely noticeable waves, shake, or slides to violent waves, shaking, or slides that carry the potential to destroy buildings and threaten life. Due to the uncertainty of when these disasters might happen, these
America is a beautiful place, but there are natural disasters that want to ruin America and other countries. If you ever get a warning about a natural disaster is about to hit you you should start by making a plan about how you are going to board up your windows, get food and water, and a medical kit just in case someone gets hurt.
According to Rubin since 2007 there have been several major disaster throughout the world which were catastrophic in their impacts (Rubin, 2012). As Americans
Before I looked into this topic of these crazy natural disasters I did not know that much about Hurricanes and all that imply. When Br. Little gave me the option to choose whatever natural disaster case I want this was easily my first choice. I have used information from cites but will probably will most likely be quotes because I cannot summarize science all that much so if it looks like plagiarism it was not intended to be. As we were talking about it in class it really interested me and how much it can impact a city or a country. Hurricanes are so fascinating to me. As we were talking about it in class it really interested me and how much it can impact a city or a country. We get the term Hurricane from the word ‘Taino’ a Native American word meaning “evil spirit of the wind” (40 Facts About Hurricanes - Conserve Energy Future).
Natural disasters have struck the hearts of many, causing injury, devastation, and fatalities. When a natural disaster occurs the feeling of uneasiness, survival, and humanity is tested during these times. Hurricane Katrina is one of many, the deadliest, damaging, and expensive Hurricanes that struck the nation. Hurricane Katrina hit the southern coast affecting Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, and Louisiana on August 29, 2005. Hurricane Katrina’s powerful wind and extreme flooding took a major toll on New Orleans Louisiana. The biggest impact of the Hurricane ravaged homes, businesses, and organization, leaving thousands dead, and millions homeless. Days before the tropical storm reached landfall, Governor Kathleen Blanco of Louisiana
They argue that Hurricane Irma has made the Caribbean islands “uninhabitable” by providing both facts and emotional connections relating to Hurricane Irma’s impact on the environment and people of the area. The authors argue this claim in order to show that Hurricane Irma has basically wiped out all signs of survival in the Caribbean area, which is a rational statement. Without the necessities of life, such as food, water, and shelter, the Caribbean is truly an unsuitable location to live in. The authors use factual information regarding the total destruction caused by Hurricane Irma, while incorporating the emotional appeal to the humans who are impacted and forced to leave everything they have because of the natural disaster. The authors use strong negative connotation and diction such as “destruction,” “death,” “pure terror,” and “absolute destruction,” in order to add to the seriousness of the situation and create a mood of solemness. The authors effectively organize information throughout the article by stating main points and backing them up with multiple pieces of evidence. The authors of the article prove to be very reliable and support all their claims with evidence, which shows high author credibility on the topic of Hurricane
While natural disasters such as floods, drought and hurricanes are commonly thought to occur due to environmental forces such as weather, climate and tectonic movements; a deeper investigation into the ‘disaster’ displays other contributing forces. Human factors have a large, if not equal, contribution to the occurrance and outcome of such disasters (Pelling, 2001). As Pelling (2001) argues, there is both a physical and human dimension to ‘natural disasters’. The extent to which the natural occurrence of a physical process, such as a flood or earthquake, impacts on society is constructed by that society, creating a ‘disaster’ as measured by a
There has been a large increase in natural disasters in the U.S and in the entire world recently, these natural disasters include Earthquakes, Floods, Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Tsunamis, and Wildfires 4.4 billion people have been affected by natural disasters, and 1.3 million people have been killed from them, according to Childfund.org. The countries that have been most affected by these natural disasters recently have been Zimbabwe, China, Peru, Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Columbia, Sierra Leone and South Asia. In just the past year, floods devastated Thailand and food shortages struck East Africa. The current food crisis has put about 18 million people in Africa’s region at risk of deeper starvation. And extreme weather will likely increase in the next few years, according to recent reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
