European nations vigorously began to take over the newly discovered Americas throughout most of the 16th century leading into the 17th century. England was very forceful in pushing out multiple groups of people to the eastern coast of what is now known as North America. At that time there were only two prominent regions in North America, they were known then as the New England and the Chesapeake colonies. These two colonies would eventually band together to stand as one nation, but that was toward the end of the 17th century. The beginning tells a completely different story, both colonies had very different beliefs on what the exact reason may have been for the settlers to come to the New World. They lived very different lives because of this. A lot of these differences affected them politically in who they followed, socially in who they spoke with, and economically in who they would do business with. Connecticut, Plymouth, Rhode Island, Massachusetts Bay Colony, and New Haven all made up the region that was New England. It laid just north of the colony of Chesapeake. The New Englanders wanted and longed for religious freedom. They were known as Puritan Separatists, they wanted complete separation from the Church of England. Protestantism was an evolution that thrived in England once the Church separated from Catholicism. These people wanted to turn toward Calvinism, because of this they began to be called “Separatists”. They were not alone in this, joined with them where
The New England and Chesapeake colonists settled in the new world for different reasons like religious freedoms in the North and quick profits in the South.
During the 1700's, people in the American colonies lived in very distinctive societies. While some colonists led hard lives, others were healthy and prosperous. The two groups who showed these differences were the colonists of the New England and Chesapeake Bay areas. The differentiating characteristics among the Chesapeake and New England colonies developed due to economy, religion, and motives for colonial expansion. The colonists of the New England area possessed a very happy and healthy life. This high way of living was due in part to better farming, a healthier environment, and a high rate of production because of more
Between the settlement at Jamestown in 1607 and the Treaty of Paris in 1763, the most important change that occurred in the colonies was the emergence of a society quite different from that in England. Changes in religion, economics, politics and social structure illustrate this Americanization of the transplanted Europeans.
While both the people of the New England region and of the Chesapeake region descended from the same English origin, by 1700 both regions had traveled in two diverse directions. Since both of these groups were beset with issues that were unique to their regions and due to their exposure to different circumstances, each was forced to rethink and reconstruct their societies. As a result, the differences in the motivation, geography, and government in the New England and Chesapeake regions caused great divergence in the development of each.
Today, the United States of America is a very racially and religiously diverse society. We saw the seeds of diversity being sown in the early days of colonization when the Chesapeake and New England colonies grew into distinctive societies. Even though both regions were primarily English, they had similarities as well as striking differences. The differentiating characteristics among the Chesapeake and New England colonies developed due to geography, religion, and motives for colonial expansion.
The immigrants that settled the colonies of Chesapeake Bay and New England came to the New World for two different reasons. These differences were noticeable in social structure, economic outlook, and religious background. As the colonies were organized the differences were becoming more and more obvious and affected the way the communities prospered. These differences are evident from both written documents from the colonists and the historical knowledge of this particular period in time.
The New England colonies consisted of puritans who wanted to purify the church because the Church in England was corrupt. They wanted a place where they could worship freely and work together to
The colonies in the New World appeared completely different and the prospect of any unity between them seemed impossible. The colonies in New England and the Chesapeake exemplify the many differences in the culture and lifestyles of the settlers, created mainly because of the fact that their founding fathers had held separate intentions when they came to the New World.
New England was a refuge for religious separatists leaving England, while people who immigrated to the Chesapeake region had no religious motives. As a result, New England formed a much more religious society then the Chesapeake region. John Winthrop states that their goal was to form "a city upon a hill", which represented a "pure"
Separatism is mentioned often throughout the story also. Separatism is more directed to people who believed that religion should be viewed perfectly. Puritans and Separatists often had the trouble of getting along just because of the differences between the two. Instead of being in one church like the puritans preferred, the separatists believed in forming multiple churches and believed that religion should be spread out. John Winthrop was a Puritan who wanted to share his religion. Since there weren’t many puritans in England, he wanted to form a new colony where he could have strictly just Puritans. This new colony was labeled the “new world” also known as, the Massachusetts Bay Colony. John ended
When comparing and contrasting the Chesapeake and New England colonies you find that there are many differences and a few similarities. These differences and similarities revolve around the colonies geography, economic characteristics, religious characteristics, and why they were founded. These differences developed in the colonies based off where they are, how they were ran, and how wealthy they were. The development of these colonies also affected the American Indians in a few different ways. Let start by comparing major difference of the geography between Chesapeake and New England colonies. New England colonies had cold weather and poor dry soil which made for a short growing season. This made it harder to grow food so most families just had a small farm for personal gain, there weren’t plantations. The New England colonies also had natural harbors and a lot of the land was covered in forests. In contrast to the New England colonies the Chesapeake colonies has hot humid weather, with long growing seasons, and excellent soil that was great for plantation and along with rivers that flowed throughout the colonies. Now let’s take a look at the differences in the economical characteristics between the colonies. In New England because of their geographical conditions they couldn’t grow crops in large plantation to make profits so they had to rely on other means to make income. Since the land was covered in forests they use the timber to expand the shipbuilding industries. They
A community is a group of people who work together towards a common goal and share a common interest. Lack of such a quality can and most likely will cause a struggling town or city to fall into the extremes of poverty and wealth. The New England community was so strong and so supportive in comparison to that of the Chesapeake Bay, that it is no wonder they developed into two distinctly different cultures before the year 1700. The Chesapeake region developed into a land of plantations and money-driven owners, with the elite wealthy, almost no middle class, and those in poverty creating the population. New England, on the other hand, had developed into a religion and family based society comprised of mostly middle class families by 1700.
Moreover, the treatment received by the slaves also differs in both Chesapeake Colonies and the Northern Colonies. Due to the high percentage of slaves resided in Virginia and Maryland, slave society was ranked the lowest in the hierocracy of freedom such that they were treated with violence and their access to freedom were restricted by the Whites (Foner 137). The slaves were also said to receive flogging by their owners on a daily basis. Such books that contained methods on improving the power of masters over their slaves were also exists in the eighteenth centuries (Foner 137). Thus, violence played a major role in the Chesapeake colonies’ institution of slavery. Contrarily, less or no violence applied by the Whites in treating their slaves
During the 17th century, North America was born by English settlements known as Jamestown and Plymouth. The two settlements found ways to adapt to the new world. However, due to the places they landed, and the type of people they were, they had similarities and differences with each other.
Queen Elizabeth, a protestant, became queen and took forth supporting the Reformation. This instantly made England turn into Europe’s leading opponent of the rising power of Catholic Spain (34). In 1559, Queen Elizabeth had reestablished the Church of England’s as a body distinct from the Catholic Church. People still felt she had not gone far enough towards freeing Christianity from the Catholics. There were Puritans and Separatists. Puritans being the ones that wished to reform, or purify, the church of England by completely going away with the hierarchy, meaning you didn’t have to work as a payment for God, the allowances of prayers for communal salvation, and promotion of missions (37). Separatists were people who wished to separate completely from the Church of England completely because of the belief that it was permanently corrupted. When they finally found the new world, Separatists turned to farms and created a fur trade more towards the north (37). Puritans were encouraged by the mass development at Plymouth, so they wanted to solemnize Massachusetts as a royal colony and colonize it themselves (38). The New World was an escape for religious freedom and created just that for the
