The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore is about two men who have the same name, Wes Moore. Both grew up in similar areas, each made choices that lead to one spending life in jail and the other spent his being in the military. The Wes Moore's grew up in the 1970's-1980's. They both were poor with single mothers who worked day in and day out, and still struggled to be able to be above the poverty line. For each man there was one moment that changed the future of their life. In the book,The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore, the author explains the idea of poverty to develop the theme poverty can affect an individual negatively, but each action and decision a person makes can control whether his or her life is positive or negative.

Parenting played a big role in shaping the two boys lives. Having a parental mentor is important because they assist and guide children to take the right decisions about their lives. The author had his two parents at the beginning of his life. Also, the author’s parents, especially his mother, tried to raise him in an effective way wanting him to know the right from wrong at an early age. “No mommy loves you, like I love you, she just wants you to do the right thing” (Moore 11). Throughout “The other Wes Moore”, The Wes’ were faced with surprisingly similar situations that were handled in very different ways. These situations were key turning points in each of their lives and shaped them into who they are. Even though each Wes had hardships in their environment and faced many trials and tribulations, ultimately, their choices during these times are what produced each Wes. Because of their series of different choices that each Wes Moore made during their lifetime and the outcome of their choices, we are not just products of our environments, but also products of the choices we make.

A person’s success or failure can be determined by their environment, education, choices; a number of different things. In the book, The Other Wes Moore it is difficult to believe the great similarities in the lives of the two Moores, who share a name and other aspects of life. The Other Wes Moore is a book about two young African-American lives that share the same name, Wes Moore. Both Wes Moores grew up with similarities, they both grew up in the same hometown. One of the Wes Moore is free and the other one is spending his life in jail. They both grew up without fathers. The author's father died in front of him when he was just three years old and the other Wes Moore barley knew his dad. The Author's father wasn’t there because he couldn’t be, and the other Wes Moore, father wasn’t there because he chose not to be. Both mothers were working hard towards setting their families and to support and care for their sons.

It is expected of everyone to make some mistakes, in my opinion the main influence on their choices came from their environment. In their environment they had peers that would influence them to do things that they did not necessarily want to do. Being that the scholar Wes Moore was bound to be on the better path than the other Wes Moore was a given. The scholar Wes Moore had components in his early life that influenced him to be on the right path. He was able to be see both sides of things and have a sense of direction and create a role model for himself. He was also able to recognize the efforts both his family and his mother has made in the past to help him in the future. There were times where he could have took the wrong path but with his ability to be a loyal and responsible person, he chose to stay on track.

In the passages, characterization of the main personas helps one understand the theme. Conflict and symbolism also help lead to the overall idea that life is not always guaranteed to be full of success. The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore is about two friends both named Wes Moore who were very close in age and lived even closer to each other. Both had lives without a father which is very common where they lived, had a very rough and depressing life growing up while also joining gangs and ran into trouble with police. The two boy’s however ended up in life very differently, The first boy a convicted murderer serving a life sentence, and the other a highly esteemed veteran, Business leader, Scholar, and accepted into America's most prestigious programs for leadership and public service. The word I chose for this book was choice.

In the book “The Other Wes Moore”, written by Wes Moore, characters, Wes and Moore have a lot of similarities like the absence of their father; however, they also have a lot of differences, these similarities and differences shape the life that these characters live.

In the novel The Other Wes Moore, the author Wes Moore talks about his life experiences as well as the experiences of another Wes Moore. Both grew up near each other and have the same name, but could not have had any more different lives. The author goes to college and graduates from Oxford and currently works at the white house, meanwhile his counterpart is serving life in prison for drugs and murder. The main goal behind this novel is to illustrate how different environments can drastically change a person’s life. In sociology this is called Socialization, a process where an individual acquires an identity that is appropriate to their social position. In a time where race and class equality is as conflicted as ever, this novel contains themes that produce these situations and ways to end them.
