The Other Wes Moore is a true story about two boys who grow up in a bad neighborhood. They shared the same first and last name, but they had two different fates. Wes, the main character and author of the book had two parents; Wesley and Joy, and two sisters; Nikki and Shani. Wes (1) had a hard time growing up because of the death of his father, who died of a rare virus. Devastated about the death of her husband Joy moved her children into her parents’ home in the Bronx. When Wes was 6, he was enrolled in an elite prep school. Moore didn’t fit in either place and he was upset about that. Wes took out his anger on school, he started getting in trouble and skipping school altogether. He also got arrested for doing graffiti. Joy couldn’t take it anymore so she begged her parents for money so that she could send Wes to military school. In The Other Wes Moore, Wes made a great decision he decided to stay in school after several attempt of escaping the game he was in. The “other” Wes, on the other hand, decided to stay in the drug life to make extra cash so he could buy flashy things and such. This is a text-to-world because many teens would drop out of school thinking getting a diploma is not worth the wait. Some do it because others do it or it too hard for them, in other cases getting bullied is also a cause for drop outs. Pregnancy and drug abuse can also affect a person’s future which is also shown in the book. Another problem is a job; getting a job is also a factor to one’s future because it’s hard to get a job which makes it hard to get a better education. No matter what decisions you make they always play a role in a person’s future, so there for it's better to think before you
In the other Wes Moore it’s about one name but two different fates. It describes how both Wes Moore’s started life started and how it is now. Both started in bad steps Wes Moore the author was sent to military school and put his life back on track and how the other Wes Moore continued his drug life and now he is serving life sentence. I believe that the other Wes Moore could have done something different to have a better life and not end up in prison serving life sentence.

Curious, Wes Moore decided to research this man’s past only to find out that they had grown in similar neighborhoods and with identical backgrounds (both lacking a father figure). Both Weses had several circumstances in common that happened early on in their lives. Moore narrates that he lost his father at a young age due to a medical misdiagnosis. “One name, two fates,” that what the author of the Other Wes Moore stated on the cover of his book. Two boys that were born in the same neighborhood in Baltimore, and had a difficult childhood since they both grew up fatherless. The coincidence was that the two boys were called Wes. They both shared a lot of similarities from living in a poor neighborhood and growing up in Baltimore street corners with their squads. However, their futures were completely different as one achieved the impossible and the other was a convicted murderer serving a life sentence. People may think that how could this happen since they both were living the same circumstances. However, in the book Wes Moore, the boys did not have equal opportunities in terms of parenting, education, and environment.
A person’s success or failure can be determined by their environment, education, choices; a number of different things. The autobiography The Other Wes Moore takes a look at two boys with the same name and eerily similar circumstances who end up in very different places in life. Wes Moore spoke at convocation about his book and what he hoped that people would get from it. In the book he says “The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his.” (Moore xi). These two men didn’t share the same fate because they each made a choice about what they wanted their life to become. The Other Wes Moore is a book about two young African-American lives that share the same name, Wes Moore. Both Wes Moores grew up with similarities, they both grew up in the same hometown. One of the Wes Moore is free and the other one is spending his life in jail. They both grew up without fathers. The author's father died in front of him when he was just three years old and the other Wes Moore barley knew his dad. The Author's father wasn’t there because he couldn’t be, and the other Wes Moore, father wasn’t there because he chose not to be. Both mothers were working hard towards setting their families and to support and care for their sons.
The reasoning as to why I believe the other Wes Moore could have went down a path to success is if the other Wes Moore had the same family support as the author Wes Moore and if his brother who had a big influence on Wes, was not involved in the drug game. While both Wes Moore’s are both fatherless, the author Wes Moore was a lot luckier than the other Wes Moore, because he had his grandparents to help raise him. With the support of his grandparents, Wes had someone to look after him and also help steer him in the right direction if needed. His grandparents gave Wes and his sisters a set of rules and chores to do every single day. Compared to the other Wes Moore, he did not have any sort of discipline or rules to go by in his house due to the fact his mother and brother were never really at home. Furthermore, with the other Wes Moore, he only had his mother and his brother Tony, who both were not a good influence on him at all. The other Wes Moore looked up to his brother and wanted to be exactly like Tony. For example, when Wes got into a small

One of us is free… The other will spend every day until his death behind bars...” (Moore, XI) In The Other Wes Moore, the author, Wes Moore, and the other Wes Moore both grew up in similar, yet different, circumstances and had completely different outcomes. This captivating narrative demonstrates how the choices you make, make you. In the introduction, the author Wes Moore validates this statement by saying, “The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his.” (Moore XI) The author, Wes Moore, shows the readers that a person’s environment, circumstances, education (or lack
