Prof. Bache English 101 23 March 2016 Thesis statement The prohibition of marijuana has sparked a big debate in today’s society Views of a dangerous killer drug we once thought as common knowledge are now being proven wrong by science and it is time for our society to reassess based on our knowledge. Although many still view marijuana as a hazardous drug, it in fact has medical, economic and social benefits such as a lowering the cost of the war on drugs, reducing the prison population, generating tax revenue, and creating jobs. These are just a few of the many benefits that can come with the legalization of marijuana. As we learn more about marijuana and its effects we need to revisit our social, political and legal views on its use. …show more content…
The FDA has approved THC based medications that are used for these purposes (What Is Medical Marijuana).” Scientific evidence for Marijuana’s effectiveness in treating wide range of diseases continues to increase daily. Today we know that cannabis can be found effective for treating nausea and appetite loss, many forms of cancer chemotherapy, pain and appetite loss due to HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and more. These all come with very mild temporary side effects, with no serious toxic reactions found in any case (Gieringer, Carter, and Rosenthal). The use of marijuana for medicinal purposes follows with a good argument as is evidenced by the many states already legalizing its use for medical purposes. As we continue to learn more everyday about the positive impact cannabis has it will only speed the process up in deciding the future of prohibition of marijuana. In addition to the medicinal value of marijuana many governments both in the United States as well as across the globe have already moved to legalize it for recreational use as well. According to Newhealthguide.org the legality of marijuana for general or recreational use varies from country to country but as of 2015 Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, the Czech Republic, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, Uruguay, Germany, the Netherlands, some U.S. states, Native American Indian reservations, and cities as well as some territories of Australia have the least
One of the primary focuses of America 's War on Drugs is the controversial drug Marijuana. Marijuana remains the most widely used illegal drug and stirs up constant debate everywhere. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime from the World Drug Report 2004 an estimation of about 4 percent of the world’s adult population (162 million) consume marijuana annually (156). For thousands of years human beings have attempted to find ways to get passed the struggles of everyday life. With the pain of the world stopping people from enjoying simple pleasures, sometimes there is a need for help. Marijuana brings millions of people relief from pain flet on a day-to-day basis. This completely natural plant which previously helped so many people has puzzled the leaders of our nation for a long time. The effects of the drug on a individual level is what 's prevented the product from being legalized. Many issues involving this plant, like the speculation of it being a gateway drug, has put yet another block on its legalization. Even with the drugs known speculations, the benefit that it brings to the table most definitely out way its disadvantages. Marijuana can also alleviate several symptoms associated with cancer and Aids treatments and disorders. While Marijuana is effective as a medicine, it is also extremely lucrative. The economic benefits that Marijuana brings to the table are endless. Non legalization is a waste of societies hard earned money to continue to enforce
The topic of marijuana use in today’s society is currently a hot topic in both politics as well is in social settings. There are many positives and negatives towards whether or not marijuana should be legalized, as well as medical and recreational pros and cons. This paper will cover the pros and cons of all topics and my personal viewpoint on the topic.
Marijuana is an illegal, highly prevalent drug that affects an enormous fraction of America's juvenile population in the present day. Today, there is a large dispute on whether Marijuana should be legalized. Some say that it should be legal due to its medical benefits, whereas others say it should remain illegal due to abusive recreational users and the negative effects it has on the body. Marijuana damages the users health, endangers public safety, and is a gateway to the world of illegal and harmful narcotics. The fact of the matter is that no matter what, legalization of the drug will only cause impairment to society in the long run.
The debate over legalization of marijuana for recreational use is an issue that has polarized many Americans. On one hand of the spectrum are the marijuana advocates that campaign for the government to lift the ban on the drug, citing beneficial uses for it for the economy and for medicine. On the other side are people who believe that marijuana legalization would serve as an addictive gateway drug for many people and would pose health hazards for people that uses it recreationally. My stance on this issue is that legalizing marijuana should be viewed as a correct decision and a step forward for America and I will elaborate why later on. By analyzing the economic aspects of marijuana legalization, I will argue my case that decriminalizing marijuana will generate billions in revenues for this country’s economy and on the same token save this country billions of dollars on prohibition enforcement. Therefore, I firmly support recreational marijuana being legalized because it is a drug that has the potential to boost the American economy and at the same time save billions of dollars on arresting and incarcerating people with illegal procession of marijuana.
Although there has been a “war on drugs” since the late 1900’s, the legalization of marijuana has been a popular topic within the past couple of years. This topic is very controversial due to the fact that many people are unable to see past the bad rap that cannabis has accumulated over past years. Among the other aspects that have already given marijuana a bad reputation, some people are trying to find more and more reasons to postpone the legalization of marijuana. Since the legalization of cannabis in Colorado, Washington and Oregon the debate of legalizing this “drug” in every state became a very important topic. Cannabis has shown how effective it can
The consumption of alcohol was prohibited in the United States during the years 1920 through 1933. Prohibition was mandated under the 18th amendment of the Constitution, enabling legislation to enforce the ban and state which types of alcoholic beverages were permissible. The amendment was later repealed by the 21st amendment in 1933, which once again legalized the consumption and distribution of alcohol. There were many reasons as to why the prohibition of alcohol failed, ranging from high instances of corruption to increased amount of organized crime. These common instances took away personal liberties of many people which caused major problems in the country and these particular problems can be seen arising again with the topic of the prohibition of Marijuana. Marijuana or Cannabis is a plant that is cultivated in large quantities and is either consumed, smoked, or inhaled to create a certain kind of altered mental and physical effect, which is referred to as a high. Though Marijuana may be considered a dangerous substance to most, it should be legalized because the economic, social, and political standpoints outweigh the negatives and is not as harmful to the United States as perceived.
The legalization of marijuana has been a very hot topic across Canada since the 2015 federal elections.
The purpose of this content is to strategically examine the overwhelming plethora of information surrounding the legalization of marijuana. Many sources available have been used to identify the mental, physical, economic and social issues surrounding the facets of marijuana use on both ends of the spectrum. While the judicial system is holding to the values entrusted to them through society; they are red taped by the economic repercussions. The health benefits that are aspired through marijuana are undoubtedly alluring to those who suffer with chronic illnesses. Research shows marijuana has the potential to enhance medical innovation and patient well-being. Weighing all aspects of both sides is the only fair way to determine whether the legalization of marijuana will be beneficial to society and the judicial system.
Since the 1970’s, marijuana has increasingly taken the forefront as the next “socially harmless” drug of choice, akin to the likes of alcohol and tobacco. Many state legislatures have begun a decriminalization process, and in some cases, full legalization and regulation. Though the scope of the following research is not to discuss the differences in legislation, the broad spectrum between completely illegal and legal use of marijuana should be noted. Regulation varies greatly from incredibly restricted medicinal use, to open recreational use and finally, legalization. At the very far end of this spectrum is complete legalization, commercialization, and regulation. The intention of this research is to show that full legalization of marijuana is not in the best interest of the people of The United States. The three most alarming factors leading to this conclusion are increased use under legalization, a detrimental effect on rate of incarceration, and finally, dramatically increased economic costs.
There has been a debate over the legalization of marijuana since it was made illegal in the 1920s. There are opponents on both sides of the issue. There are many benefits to the legalization of marijuana, but there are also detrimental effects to society that are caused by marijuana use. These issues need to be debated to determine if the legalization of marijuana would benefit the United States. According to a 2003 Zogby poll, “the government should treat marijuana more or less the same way it treats alcohol: It should regulate it, control it, tax it, and only make it illegal for children.” (Nadelmann, Ethan)
Although other physician recommended drugs can relieve various illnesses, for some patients these drugs do not relieve their symptoms, as they should (Joy 117). For this type of patient, medical marijuana is an obvious alternative, if only it were legal. The legalization of marijuana is becoming a more polemic debate as several states are, at the very least, decriminalizing it. The decision for legalization is conflicted between whether the drug can provide benefits towards certain medical conditions and also be safe to consume. Marijuana should be legalized for medical uses because it has a broad set of therapeutic effects that are beneficial to certain patients. Two FDA-approved drugs contain a chemical that resides in marijuana, which shows that the side effects of prescription drugs are similar to marijuana. The legalization does not have a negative influence on society, especially teenagers, according to research done with eight states.
Marijuana should be legalized nationally. Men and women both inside and outside the medical field argue that marijuana is effective in treating a magnitude of physical health conditions and diseases. The federal and state government could save tax money by not having to supply the necessities to the prisoners sentenced because of marijuana possession and/or usage. By legalizing the use of marijuana, we could potentially put many major drug dealers out of business.
In the United States the legalization of marijuana has been one of the most controversial topics around the country. It is controversial to many people because under federal law the drug “marijuana” is illegal. However due to the positive medical purposes of the drug, under state law marijuana is legal in certain states either medically or recreationally. When you look back at this history of our country, we have been through many periods of growth, expansion, and prohibition. Topics such as the legalization of alcohol, and gay marriage have similarities with the legalization of marijuana because of the simple fact that these changes in society impact the way individuals live their lives. The benefits that this drug can bring to the country have sparked some interest from different scholars studying the topic. However, the negatives influences of the drug have brought up arguments that go against the legalization of marijuana. These issues with the drug can ultimately lead to major health issues, and more adolescent usage. This paper will review different schools of thought about why states in America have legalize marijuana have legalized marijuana medically and recreationally. To answer this question I took the method in choosing three different states in the country to look at the views and laws of marijuana. Each states in America has different needs, and laws. Looking into each individual state gives the best answer to why more and more states are starting
The use of cannabis toward medicine should not be shocking to anyone, since it has been around for centuries. As a matter of fact, it has been under medicinal aid for an estimated 5,000 years. Western medicine truly grasped marijuana’s medicinal abilities in the 1850’s. Infact, doctors documented over one hundred papers about how marijuana helped numerous disorders, such as nausea, glaucoma, movement disorders, pain relief, depression, and anxiety. It also helps cancer patients and those with HIV or Aids. Currently, many American patients have access to marijuana use so that they can have effective treatments for their illnesses. Medical marijuana use is achievable because
The legalization of marijuana has been a highly debated and controversial subject for the past century. Up until the early twentieth century, marijuana was cultivated and used widely throughout the U.S. for both medical and industrial purposes. Beginning in the early twentieth, the taboo of marijuana became popularized due the sensationalized reports of Mexican immigrants smoking marijuana and becoming violent with superhuman strength. This led to the U.S. federal government imposing a prohibition on the cultivation and possession of marijuana that is still in use today. Currently, nine states have or are set to fully legalize marijuana within the next year for both recreational and medical use, with twenty states legalizing the possession of medical marijuana.Despite the legalization of marijuana in multiple states, the federal government has yet to pass any form of law legalizing or decriminalizing the use of marijuana. This failure by our government has snuffed out the potential benefits that legalized marijuana can provide. Legalizing marijuana in the U.S. can provide a safer alternative to alcohol and tobacco, marijuana can provide health benefits to citizens who suffer from illnesses such as cancer or depression, and marijuana can provide benefits to the federal government by providing jobs and new industries.
