Homework: Does it Help, or Harm Us? When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning homework, every student's heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do as well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers should give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and less homework helps improve test scores. The first reason teachers should give students less homework is that it takes away their childhood. When a student goes to school for seven hours a day, and then goes home to three hours of homework, they do not get to be a kid. It is suggested that student adopt an eight-eight-eight schedule. This schedule being eight …show more content…
Assigning less homework in schools could reduce teen anxiety and teen depression rates (Kohn). The next reason too much homework is harmful to students is that studies show more homework to cause lower test scores. One to two hours of homework a week does not cause a major change in test scores (Wolchover). There is no evidence of homework having any academic benefit in elementary or middle school, and the academic benefit found in high school is very weak (Kohn). Homework is not shown to help students academically until grades ten through twelve (Wolchover). There is also no proof that homework increases good study habits in students (Kohn). On top of too much homework making standardized test scores lower, much of this homework is just busy work (Wolchover). Many teachers ask their student to re-write pages in a textbook. This just causes the student to spend time on something that has no real purpose. Remedial work has no positive effect on students. It just takes up more time ("Too Much Homework Can Cause Stress, Depression and Lower Grades, Studies Suggest"). Even homework that is useful in some way should be limited. Studies show that a student's time is more useful when they play an instrument or a sport. Parent's want their student to be good at many things. It is more important to be a well-rounded person than to ace all of your tests (Wolchover). One of the top
Not only does homework help student but also it creates interaction between teens and parents. However, statics has shown that even though homework is a way to refresh what students have learned, it also create stress for students. Homework has shown its benefits for student but most of the time when student is given a homework it’s likely he/she will not do it. They believe it’s stressful, and when they can’t get the right answer, they gave up instantly instead of keep practicing. According to researchers, they believe that when student do more homework they get better grades and do well on the test/quizzes that were given. Even though homework has many advantage toward students, it also has disadvantage. Which include having too much homework and these things could lead to mental health issue toward students.
The quality of students’ homework is much more important than the quantity of students homework and data collected during recent studies has proven that homework is not making the grade. “. . . American students are entangled in the middle of international academic rankings: 17th in reading, 23rd in science, and 31st in math according to the most recent results from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA)” (Murphy-Paul). Students should not be given an excessive amount of homework because the pressure of having to complete excessive amounts of homework every night is quite daunting for most students. Knowing how much homework is the right amount correlates with age and grade. An 8th grade student should not be given a myriad of homework that would keep her awake past midnight completing assignments. In any case, there should be a limit on the amount of homework all teachers give to students because an excessive amount of homework would eventually cause students to become uninterested in school and learning, which could result in poor test scores and low ranks in international academic rankings. In order for students to carry out daily activities throughout the day restfully, teachers must be able to provide homework that does not exceed the appropriate amount of time needed to complete it, which is based on grade level. If teachers are too clueless of a students health due to excessive amounts of homework, many students will develop cases of sleep
When we get home we have to do a lot homework.Having a lot of homework makes us have less family time and a lot of the time we can’t finish it because we have a lot of it. If we get less homework we would have better grades because we would actually do our homework.
A study by the American Journal of Family Therapy speaks to this issue. In the study, it was found that children in first to sixth grade are assigned three times as much homework as recommended by the National Education Association. According to another study, an overabundance of homework has been found to not only be unnecessary, but also correlate with negative non-academic effects in students attending high school. These effects can range anywhere from psychiatric issues such as depression to physical health issues such as ulcers, migraines, sleep deprivation and weight loss (Galloway et al.).
First there is way too much homework. Here are some reasons why having a lot of homework is not a good thing. Students that have a lot of homework can’t spend a lot of time with family. (Washington) Also students can’t spend a lot of time outside. (Washington) Some students also get an average of 6.1 hours a week of homework (Washington) There is a so called ten minute rule (Wallace). Kids
So sometimes homework is stressful children and you don’t want that. A study by a group of Australian researchers found the average scores of kids who have spent a lot of time of homework, showed clearly that when more time was spent on homework students were getting lower scores. Denise Pope, a senior lecturer at stanford university found out kids stressing over homework has some bad effects like students lives outside of school, including friends and family, and other activities. Also Tommy Convey said ‘’sometimes I will stress over homework and because of that I can’t go outside. This proves that kids get stressed out over
There are many reasons students should not have homework. Research proves the negative effect of homework. Knowing the negatives of homework can impacted how teachers hand out assignments. Most of the reasons that homework is ineffective because it can cause stress, easily distracted, and can put pressure to and you don’t get time with family, and physical activities. After reading this text readers should know way homework is bad for students.
While homework is a great practice of concepts, and a good representation of your standing academically, it negatively impacts the health of the majority of students. Staying up past 3 a.m., skipping dinner or lunch, being hunched at a computer for several hours a day, not having enough time to exercise, and not spending much time with families and friends --which ruins social interaction-- are some of the many negative social and physical impacts of homework on students. Research shows that in 1920, some doctors were concerned on the conditions of the student. According to the data from surveys, about 56% of students blame stress on homework, 43% on tests, 33% on the
Apparently, as told by many teachers, they give a fair amount of homework. Have you ever asked the kids how they feel? Forty-Five percent of kids from grades three through twelve say that they get at least an hour of homework, while a six percent say that they get up to three hours. Where do the parents and teachers draw the line at too much? Just like chocolate, too much homework can be a bad thing. Too much homework to the brain is like trying to touch a wild animal, it does not end well. While parents and teachers say that the kids getting a lot of homework is good because they get to practice and better themselves at what they are learning, others say that the kids should not get a lot because they have many other activities going on in their lives. When kids have too much homework they cannot do any extracurricular activities that they fancy, and if they do not finish their homework because they have too much then they could act out and suffer major consequences.

Students all across the country are suffering from the same dilemma, homework! It may not be seen as a dilemma or even a problem but rather as something helpful to the learning process. From a student’s point of view, however, homework is one of the top causes of stress throughout high school. With the expectation to take about 6 to 7 classes a day, the amount of homework each teacher assigns starts to pile up and the workload gets overwhelming. No one wants to sit at a table wrecking their brain trying to figure out how to complete something they have no interest in. Is a student’s willingness and ability to learn not important? They can both be effected by the amount of stress that a huge workload of homework can cause. This is why teachers should decrease the amount of homework they assign and modify it to make it more balanced and challenging yet interesting and not time consuming. The amount of stress students face would diminish and students would still be learning.
Homework may bring emotional, physical, and socially damaging to students. Most of the students in the U.S. take multiple classes with different subjects each school year. Some of these students see their teacher every day or every other day, this means students are going home every day with homework and that includes weekends. Students already spend 8 hours a day on weekdays in school and then they also have to go home with about 2-4 hours of homework. If there are only 24 hours in a day and 8 are spent at school, another 8 hours sleeping, and about 3 hours of homework that leaves students with 5 hours to eat, shower, socialize, be involved in extracurricular actives, work for those who need to, and time to spend with their family. Above all, it is obvious students do not have enough time in the day to juggle all of this, and that is not counting the students that take bus and arrive home later than other students. Due to not having enough time through the day students will have to pick and choice how they spend their hours outside of school, one of the most common things students sacrifice is their sleep at night and this affects them so bad and they have no idea. According to the research MD Craig Canapari found “Short sleep makes children obese, sleepiness is a significant cause of automobile accidents which is the most common cause of death in teenagers, depression, anxiety, and irritability are all associated with insufficient sleep.”(2012 p.1) Another thing students usually
If you’re thinking that homework does benefit students, let’s take a close look at how much homework can actually benefit students. If a student has 7 class periods a day, and 6 of those class periods include homework. That student is having to worry about 6 tasks, generally spending a minimum of 3 to 4 hours working on homework. If that task is long,
Ever since I can remember I’ve hated Homework. Almost every kid and even most adults I know despise and resent it. Too much homework can cause stress, bad behavior/attitude, sleep deprivation, lower self-esteem, and poor social skills. There are many statistics to back the argument that too much homework is harmful. In 2013, research conducted at Stanford University found that students in high-achieving communities who spend too much time on homework experience more stress, physical health problems, a lack of balance in their lives, and alienation from society.
The general arguments given by teachers and some parents are that homework increases the overall grade averages, sharpens study habits, and helps students become more prepared for college work. Along with that, it helps students learn responsibility for life in the work field of the real work. Although these arguments are valid, there are arguments against homework as well. Homework causes students to be stressed out when there is too much to be done by a certain deadline and takes away the free time of students. Some of the work that students are assigned isn't relevant to what they are studying. Worst of all, it causes that struggling student to lose interest in the study of that subject ("Students and Homework"). While it does have negative outcomes, homework also has it's perks. Homework has helped prepare
