The strengths and shortcomings of an individual impacts several aspects of both their personal and professional lives including job performance, relationships, and health. An individual that is focused on their shortcomings is six times more likely to dread going to work, have more negative than positive interactions with others, achieve less on a daily basis, and have fewer positive and creative moments (Rath, 2007, p.12). On the other hand, when individuals do invest time and energy into developing their strengths they experience improved confidence, direction, hope, and kindness towards others (Rath, 2007, p. 12). “To help people uncover their talents, Gallup introduced the first version of its online assessment, StrengthsFinder, in the 2001 management book Now, Discover Your Strengths” (Gallup, 2016). Since, 2001, Gallup has changed and updated the original assessment to the StrengthsFinder 2.0 assessment which includes language of 34 themes. The StrengthsFinder 2.0 online assessment identified my personal top five themes as responsibility, strategic, significance, adaptability, and learner. First the theme responsibility displays my willingness to take psychological ownership of what I say I will do, my commitment to values such as honest and loyalty, a strong desire to make others feel welcomed and accepted in my presence, and a need to conduct myself in a proper, ethical, legal, and upright manner to gain a sense of righteousness. Second, the theme of strategic
For instance the strength of being restorative has shown me that I need to work on not trying to control every situation and solve every problem someone has. I need to let them figure out how to solve their problems and just be a sounding board for them when they need it. Being a mom it is hard to not just jump in every time my boys face a difficult situation and just solve it for them. They are young men now and I realize that I need to take a back seat and let them figure out where their life’s road will take them and to be there to listen and help as they ask me. Hard, yes, but a necessity. By doing the assessment and finding out what my top three strengths are I can use them to in the best way possible to achieve the goals I have for my life both personally and professionally. I realize that being deliberative, my belief system and being restorative are my strengths and not weaknesses and I can now capitalize on those strengths at work and
Each of us possess personal characteristic strengths that makes each of us unique. As individuals these strengths allow us to add value to all of our relationships both personally and professionally. For many of us, we can recognize the characteristics and how they add value to lives, unfortunately though many of us will struggle voicing these strengths openly during job interviews, performance evaluations, or team meetings. One of the first challenges is to understand that we are all lifelong learners and it is through these experiences that we develop these strengths which allows us to become an essential part of a relationship whether it is a personal or professional relationship. As within the realm of a Human Resource Professional the ability to recognize these strengths in people we must also recognize them within ourselves so that we may leverage those skills to advocate for both the employee and the organization. Throughout my life, my strengths have tended to gain more clarity and centered on my profession because form many of the majority of our time is spent there. Some of my personal characteristics that will bring value and strength to any organization are: organization, communication, the ability to be discrete and ethical, conflict management/problem solving and change management. As in many organization HR management requires a very orderly approach. Throughout my
Identifying and understanding your own personal strengths is key to being a successful leader. Knowing your strengths means you can focus your efforts to maximize results, in yourself and in others. Strengths Finder 2.0 is designed to uncover your strengths and utilize these strengths to your advantage (Rath, 2007). Identifying and applying these strengths to your leadership style, will enhance your effectiveness as a transformational leader.
Based on the Clifton Strengths Assessment my top five strengths are strategic, deliberative, learner, maximize and individualization. As an individual, I rarely look into my weakness. I believe that when your too focused on your weakness, you forget about your strengths. Everything the book said is true, and we need to take the time to look at our strengths and make it perfect. It is true that in this world or the school system, we are taught to look at our weakness and correct it so that we can become stronger in our life. This book brings out the truth that I longed to hear for a long time. Invariably, I hear my professor tell their students that for them success in life, they must practice and look at our weakness. This book proves it wrong because for us to become successful, we must stay to our strengths’ path.
Tom Rath’s “Strengths Finder 2.0” on-line assessment identified that my top five strengths are: Strategic, Focus, Futuristic, Significance, and Learner. I see the Strength Finder Assessment as a great opportunity to get to know my personal strengths and it motivates me to work and practice my talents rather than trying to fix my weaknesses. Looking only at my strengths is a new type of skills-building which allows me to stay focus on my talents.
My top 5 themes from the StrengthsQuest Inventory are Maximizer, Relator, Adaptability, Includer, and Belief.
This also leads into the feedback I received on my Competency Assessment tool regarding working with teams internally and externally, paying attentions to other people’s needs and maintaining good relations while being an example to others, following through and unfolding organizational values. These findings also coincided with the Strengths Finder Assessment I took at my current place of employment. According to this assessment, my five strengths are Empathy, Relator, Consistency, Harmony and Includer. Gallup stated that Identifying, developing, and using your strengths and talents would help you become a more effective leader.
Discovering ones strengths is an important process that every young adult should strive to achieve, that is why I was excited to take the Gallup Strengthfinder Assessment. This test aims to highlight each individual’s unique assets, which is possible by completing a short evaluation. Then the poll produces the top five signature themes out of thirty-four possible options. Like many, I was very eager to learn something new about myself. This came as no surprise once I received my test results which are closely related to knowledge.
When I took my strengths test I was not necessarily shocked with what I received, more with what I did not receive. I thought for sure that I would have received positivity because people are always telling me how positive I am. Through learning about my strengths I have come to realize that all five of my strengths together may be the cause of my positive attitude, and all five of my strengths working together constantly are what people see. My strengths are restorative, communication, input, strategic, and achiever.
In the strengths and weaknesses interview, I was told that my strengths included a good communicator, pro-activity on tasks, and excellent at goal setting and having a “get it done” approach. I was also told my weaknesses included a lack of self-confidence, perfectionism,
After taking the StrengthsFinder survey, I was surprised at what I found in some instances. This survey was actually the most accurate of any quiz I have taken previously when describing my strengths and it even nailed many of my personality traits. According to the StrengthsFinder survey, my top five themes, or strengths are Learner Maximizer, Arranger, Responsibility, and Developer (Gallup, 2012).
The Values in Action Inventory of Strengths was designed to classify one’s character strengths and assess the strengths identified utilizing a self-reporting survey, Peterson and Seligman
There are many personal characteristics that can affect a person as an individual and his professional success, namely openness, ability to learn and adapt etc. These personal characteristics can sometimes make a person successful and sometimes doesn’t. As I spend more and more time as a professional, I perceive that there are few characteristics that are essential for professional success: namely ambitious, creative and adaptable. These characteristics come out in many different ways. Have you set your goals? Have you decided the path you have to take to pursue your goal? What are the sacrifices you can do to achieve your ambition? How much can you think out of the box to resolve a particular issue or bring new idea to the table? How
I believe that life is a learning experience and being able to recognize our own strengths and weaknesses can help us become better individuals in anything we choose to do, whether it is positive abilities and skills that can help achieve our goals or negative personal areas that need improvement. Knowing yourself and what you can do, can help you recognize and overcome your weaknesses.
