NIGHTJOHN My first theme is prejudice. It is never right for one individual to own another, or for one group of people to be denied equal rights because they are different in some way. In NightJohn, they were prejudice and made African American people be enslaved and work for them and treat them differently just because they were a different color than them. I’ve seen prejudice a lot all my life. Whether it’s for for colored people or gay people or whatever, in the end we’re all the same and should all be treated equally. My second theme is Freedom. NightJohn was free for a bit, but came back because he thought reading and writing was that important for other slaves to know. But when he was teaching Sarny, the other slaves didn’t
Based on theme two, they reconstructed the myths about whites and blacks. They began to explain the concept of “If they gain, we lose”. There was a concern of the participants having and not having and about sharing privilege but not wanting to give it up (McIntyre, 57). McIntyre explains that there are always exceptions to the rule and it reconstructs the myth of “equal opportunity for all”.
The three themes that stood out the most to me were: prejudice, leadership, and bravery. My first theme is prejudice, in my opinion it is not right to own someone as “property”
In todays society, gender and race play a big role in these modern times. This problem is mainly affected towards Hispanics and African Americans because they can 't get a job just cause of their ethnicity. When people think of Latinos or African Americans, the first thought is lazy, but in actuality they work for their pay just like everyone else would. The book Of Mice & Men by John Steinbeck is a perfect example of these situations. Power is another major issue at hand in the story and in life because power is limited on how it is used. Curley, Curley 's wife and Crooks have their own power to what they own but because of their Gender and Ethnicity, they have their own privileges.
The last topic is about the strength of quality. African Americans over the time has become united as one and tried to follow their dreams. Her poem is a prime example of how some egos are bigger than others and how it can also blur someone’s
Another example of theme is in the end of the book. This is when Micheal came back to save all of his friends. ‘ “Hatch is about to hurt our friends, and I need to stop him” ’
night John is included prejudice and it is important because, It show how we shopped for slaves like grocery’s. When Sarny and night John were sold. It shows people today how mistreated they were. It also shows the audience how he could sell Sarny and it not matter. Shows how fast they can leave , just like that.
This is an essay about NightJohn and how he needed to use Bravery, leadership, and freedom to gain control. NightJohn is a book about slavery and not just any slaves but NightJohn and Sarny.
The theme I chose was racism and how it takes a big part in the book. In the first chapter James lived in Suffolk Virginia with his mother Ruth They live in a neighborhood with all black people. Ruth rides her bike around and she often plays her piano. “When i was fourteen, my mother took up two new hobbies: riding a bicycle and playing piano.”
The young adult novel Nightjohn depicts the plight of enslaved African-Americans from the point-of-view of an adolescent so that readers can feel as well as learn about the difficulties experienced by slaves in the antebellum south. The book revolves around the prohibition of teaching slaves how to read. In the novel, a former escaped slave named John teaches a young girl named Sarney how to read. John or 'Nightjohn' as he is called, slips into the slave barracks at night when the whites of the plantation are sleeping, and attempts to spread empowering knowledge to his people. John could have remained safe in the north but he chose to return because of his belief in the power of the written word.
Throughout the novel many problems occur. Some of the main problems are racial and equality issues. Events in this book show how prejudice and intolerance can ruin numerous friendships and change lives.
The structure of the novel is significant in presenting the issues of racism from both sides of the story. The story starts with a prologue which sets the scene and
To begin with, one major theme that continuously played a part throughout the entire book is desire. To many of the characters, it was the one urge that they could never overcome. One
Themes: One of the main themes of the text was "white security." Part of the fear of having freed blacks in the areas where slavery was practiced, was the fear that freed blacks would inspire black slaves to revolt. There was also a fear that slaves with too much "freedom" or that were literate were also prone to inspire others to revolt and cause physical harm to the white man, or even worse, the white woman. Much of this fear was unfounded because many revolts resulted in no loss of white life, with the exception of the Nat Turner insurrection, which only served to deepen the fear for white security and cause restrictions to be tightened not only on slaves, but freed blacks as well.
Racism is a relative term. While many people argue that Conrad's novel, Heart of Darkness, contains the theme of racism, they tend to ignore the fact that this novel was written around the turn of the century. During this time period it was accepted practice to think of a black man as savage because that was how the popular culture viewed the African American race. If someone called a black man "savage" today, that someone would be considered a racist. Of course, this turn of the century view of blacks is inexcusable but it was the accepted norm of the time. The problem is that modern critics tend to apply modern thinking to all novels, including those written in a specific time period with
In the novel “ The Breadwinner” My theme is “Courage.¨ It is about a girl named Parvana and her family is in danger she is losing money and now Parvana's has to make a big commitment. Not only that, but her dad got taken away and now he is in Jail. Parvana has to do something very brave and she must have a lot of courage to this, she has to act and dress like a boy in order to get money and take care of her family. Every day Parvana would go to the market and work, One-day Parvana was walking and Parvana saw a girl in an alleyway sitting there with no burqa on and Parvana told the girl to come to her house. The parts of the book show that this theme for this book is courage and for sure it will make you believe that theme is a good theme for this book.
