War presents a very complex array of human emotions and actions that are unique to only the battlefield. The soldiers in Things They Carried followed faced this diverse spectrum of emotions and challenges in the jungles of Vietnam. Faced with adversity from everything from the enemy, fellow soldiers, memories, to even the jungle itself, the soldiers had to find a way to stay sane and alive. Through these challenges such themes as loss of innocence, false courage, and carrying of burden were created. The individuals that comprised Tim O’Brien’s platoon came from all walks of life that in the common situation of war are molded down to soldiers. Ivy Leaguers and people devout in their religion turned killers in the case of a call to arms. The blatant symbolism of the story of Mary Anne’s transformation from cheerleader to hardened killer most obviously exposed the central theme of The Things They Carried to be loss of innocence. …show more content…

It was a war that O’Brien did not believe in, but by the possibility of feeling the shame of embarrassing his father or the community, he could not stand by his own beliefs and back down. This false courage was worn like a badge by characters like Curt Lemon who would have died sooner than to be called a yellow
