The story starts out during the Winter with a group of boys, MATT, SIMON, MARK, and LUKE. SIMON convinces the other boys to get tickets to a concert in New York City. Although when they get to the city they don’t even get to the concert, and they are all mugged and are left without their phones and wallets. They try to find their way back home. They take the train and everyone is kicked off but SIMON, because he found a ticket in his pocket, and SIMON promises to come back for them once he gets home. Once arriving to school, Benson soon realize that it is all a setup. Nothing about this school is normal. There are no adults and everything is operated by students. There are classes, but no homework. Even the school’s maintenance jobs are bid on by gangs created by the students. The biggest and most authoritative gang is the Society; this gang plays by the rules and doesn’t do anything that can land them in trouble. The next society is Havoc, they want to be commanding and intimidating. The last gang is the V’s, the strictest gang, this is where Benson joins. The boy's name is Brady. Brady is a fourteen year old eighth grader who is passing out candy on Halloween. Alongside him is his best friend Cam. The two boys have been passing out candy for about an hour now and they were starting to get tired when they saw a couple of Juniors driving in a pickup truck snatching candy from the little kids on the street. Brady instantly recognized the three guys. The driver was Tommy,a starter on the high school football team. The other two were Tommy’s friends that pretty much did anything he said to do. There names were Colin and Dylan and same with Tommy they were also on the football team. Cam and Brady stood on Brady’s front porch wondering if they should just let them get away with it or actually be the first ones to stand up to the three Juniors. Then Brady had a flashback to when he was in the third grade and he was trick or treating. Brady was walking around the neighborhood with Cam and he could remember how exciting it was to see all of the cool costumes and the best part was all the candy he received at the end of the night. Brady remembered how important Halloween was to him as a kid so he wasn’t going to let three losers ruin the kid's Halloween. Cam nodded and agreed to stop the boys so they ran into Brady’s house and grabbed four pillow cases to put the candy into when they were done taking the candy back.

It was the first day of school for Lilo Smith and it was very hot since it was one of the last days of summer. Lilo was very nervous since she did not know anyone. She walked through the front doors of the school slouched and looked at the ground the whole time until she reached her first class. She went to one of the desk in the back of the classroom and stayed to herself. Many students looked at her but no one put forth an effort to talk to her. The bell rung and class was about to start. The teacher walked into the room and so did another girl. The girl came all the way back to the desk Lilo was sitting at and told her to move. Lilo did not move she stayed seated and waited for the teacher to look back and see what was going on. The teacher told the girl to go find another seat, so the girl gave Lilo a dirty look and went and found another seat. After that everyone had to go around the room and say their name and at least one thing they did that summer. The girl that was rude to Lilo was named Mindy, she talked about how her parents took her to Paris. A boy that sat in front of Lilo named Jake talked about how he got to spend all summer at the beach. When it was Lilo’s turn she stated her name then didn’t know what else to say because all she did all summer was move.

Zach wanted to beat Nick up because he saw Nick looking at his ex-girlfriend. Eli welcomes Nick into his journalism club. The girl that Nick was looking at is also Eli’s sister. Nick may or may not like her.Less than a month later, Nick finds Eli dead in the J-Room. Nick and Reya, Eli’s sister, try to find out what happened to Eli because they think that he was murdered, even though his death was made to look like a suicide. Eli’s family and Nick are grieving.The school tries to get Nick to go to Grief Counseling by pulling him out of class. But, instead of going, Nick decides that he will just skip school. Instead of being able to leave though, the Sheriff was patrolling and caught Nick trying to leave, and takes him to the police station. Sheriff Hill isn’t supposed to know but, he knows that Nick and his family are in WitSec.
