Franklin Delano Roosevelt [FDR], was a Democrat and the 32nd President of the United States. The Democrats nominated Franklin Roosevelt as their candidate for president in 1932 against the incumbent Hoover. Roosevelt was elected in a landslide victory in part due to his platform called "The New Deal". ( He won a record of four presidential elections. Theodore Roosevelt the 26th president, and arguably one of the greatest presidents of all time. Roosevelt went from being the 33rd governor of NY, to the vice president, and at 42 years of age, he became the highly respected successor of President McKinley. Roosevelt later was elected for a second term. Even though he achieved all these great things, there were surly challenges that laid in his path to greatness. The challenges that Roosevelt faced he overcame through perseverance and enforcing what he believed in. One of Roosevelt's most famous quotes is "Speak softly and carry a big stick". Teddy Roosevelt was a man with a desire to help this country improve not just for his generation, but for our generation, and the generations to come.

There have been many influential presidents during the history of our nation. A few examples include George Washington who led our country through the revolutionary war and our nation’s first president. There was also Abraham Lincoln who led us through the Civil War. However our most influential president is Franklin D. Roosevelt. During Franklin Roosevelt’s years in the oval office he would lead our country through one of the toughest times during the 20th century enduring the great depression and World War II. Theodore Roosevelt was born with asthma and three siblings, two younger siblings and one older sister. His asthma was so bad that sometimes he would wake up in the middle of night feeling like he was being smothered to death scaring both himself and his parents. After going on a family trip to the Alps, young Roosevelt found out that exercise minimized his asthma. He and his father did exercises together and strengthened his body. For his education, Roosevelt had lots of tutors that taught him French and German and other classical classes. Roosevelt found himself interested in zoology much to the delight of his cousins who enjoyed catching squirrels and such for amusement with him and making little museums.

After the death of Teddy’s mother and Alice, Theodore moved out to the Dakota Badlands to escape his grief. Once there, Teddy “soaked into the frontier lifestyle” and bought two ranches, the Maltese Cross Ranch and the Elkhorn ranch, and invested $40,000 in cattle for the Maltese Cross Ranch (Unites States. History: Theodore Roosevelt: Rancher). “He flourished in the hardships of the western frontier, riding for days, hunting grizzly bears, herding cows as a rancher, and chasing outlaws as a frontier sheriff” (Miller Center).Teddy also was suited to the rancher look; he wore spurs, belt buckles, and had some pearl handled revolvers made by Tiffany’s, which was a famous jewelry store. He also had a fringed cowboy shirt made from buckskin. The whole outfit would have cost $100 which would amount to $1,000 today (Unites States. National Park Service. History: Theodore Roosevelt: Rancher). Theodore headed back to the East after a harsh winter killed off most of his cattle in 1886 (Miller Center).

The first thing he did was join the Republican Party. This allowed him to be elected to the New York State Assembly. Prior to his term on the state assembly government jobs were given to those who helped elect politicians. Teddy believed the people who worked in government should be good at their jobs thus changing the landscape of government. Roosevelt enjoyed being in politics. In 1886 he ran for mayor of New York City but he ended up losing the election. In the 1900 election Theodore became vice president for William McKinley but in 1901 McKinley was assassinated so Teddy became president. He led the United States out from a crisis the US would emerge victoriously and into a war it would win.
