The title of the book that I read is Thomas Jefferson by Norman K. Risjord. This book was published in 1994.
The biography I read was Thomas Jefferson and it was very enlightening and informative. The story began in Shadwell, Virginia where Thomas Jefferson was born in 1743 and raised until he was approximately 18. Thomas Jefferson’s parents were well off, but his father died when Thomas was 14. When Jefferson was 17 years old, he got permission to attend the College of William and Mary. Thomas Jefferson did many things in his long life. Jefferson created the many different reforms. Jefferson spent a lot of his time at his home in Monticello with his wife and kids. I think it expanded greatly on Thomas Jefferson’s great qualities and only briefly stated any bad qualities he may have possessed, such as, speaking in public, Sally Hemmings and his slave ownership. Risjord willingly explains his wonderful writings like the Tea Act Reform (page 22) and the Declaration of Independence. (page 28-32) Even though Norman Risjord may have been somewhat sympathetic to Thomas Jefferson, I feel in no way was Norman Risjord apologetic towards Jefferson. Norman Risjord did and excellent job of stating the true facts about Thomas Jefferson without seeming apologetic or critical at any time. I feel that most of the time the book was a very fair and balanced appraisal of Thomas Jefferson.
During this time period of this book, Jefferson and most all of the other main characters were faced with several hardships. The characters were, in one way or another, an integral part of putting America together. Jefferson was faced with several problems during that time. He and the other characters were faced with uneasiness of no knowing what would have been best for America. They were all experimenting with many new and different ideas of what might form the best America. The Louisiana Purchase is a good example of one of the problems during their time. Thomas Jefferson was a 33 year old newlywed delegate from Virginia. He was a very tall man. He was also the man who wrote the Declaration of Independence. He was one of the best, if not the best writer of his time, he wrote multiple books, essays, and passages. He was a very respected man in congress, so when he made decisions, people listened. He proposed that the dove be adopted as the national bird of America.

Americans were expanding westward and needed a port for transport on the Mississippi, so Spain allowed them to use New Orleans. In 1801 Louisiana was ceded to France by Spain. In the article, Jefferson initially shows a concern for the African Americans. He expresses emancipating the slaves. He also suggested sending them to another country. Jefferson speaks on how all men are created equal and how slavery is not right.

Jefferson became the Governor of Virginia in 1779, and wrote the Notes on the State of Virginia in 1785. Jefferson became a delegate in France in 1785. After Jefferson’s return to America he became the Secretary of State. Jefferson became the vice-president in 1796 and became the President of the United States in the Election of 1800. At some point in a person’s lifetime, whether it be through educational endeavors or everyday conversations regarding political leanings, the name Thomas Jefferson has definitely made an appearance in some aspect. This may be in terms of memorizing each president and their legacy or analyzing how the actions he made in office changed today’s society as whole. He was agreat leader, but as a person, Jefferson was quite a bastard. Racist and acquisitive, he was, especially when it came to obtaining land and money. He threw the Indians westward to get their land by forcing them in debt. He threw away thousands of Indians just for their land, claiming to be doing the best thing for our nation. This land acquired was used for agriculture, probably to grow crops, sell them, and get money. This is a perfect example of his greed. His racism encouraged him to continue slavery and even make free blacks feel vulnerable. Jefferson didn’t even believe his own writings of “all men are created equal”. In addition, his affair with Hemings caused huge controversy with his people, and those who hated Jefferson found yet another reason to keep doing so. Thomas Jefferson's ideals and beliefs were derived from a deep regard for life, liberty, and freedom. His concept of individual freedoms strongly disagreed with the notion of a "guided republic" which he believed concentrated a great deal unchecked power among a few people. This could have the potential of tyrannical government that might suppress personal freedoms of any kind especially those of religion, which Jefferson feels very strongly felt should be protected. But that is what Jefferson wants. He wants to live among rich people and be, or at least pretend to be as rich as them. So he decides “never again to speak to black people” (28) that he now considers as a waste of time and money, because they were always borrowing money from him and never pay back. He has written books and articles on a number of subjects in early American History. To begin with, the author cites specific achievements that Thomas Jefferson made, starting with the contributions he did when he was part of the Continental Congress. “As a member of the Continental Congress, he proclaimed in the imperishable prose of the Declaration of Independence the values of liberty, equality, and natural rights that always have been at the heart of the American experiment in self-government” (Sheridan 64). Jefferson is a peculiar character in that the story is centred on his existence and, although his thoughts and opinions are seldom expressed, the lessons he learnt are completely unambiguous. As the tragic story goes, he is a very young black man unjustly condemned to death for a crime he did not commit. Furthermore, he is dehumanized in his defence when he is called a “hog” and this detrimentally affects his self esteem throughout a significant portion of the novel. However, this melancholic situation he is thrust into and his initial reaction to it is contrasted against his final moment which unashamedly reveals just how much he has learnt in his incarceration period.
