Understanding My Adult Stages Of Life

The transition from young adulthood to middle adulthood involves many bodily and lifestyle changes. A person is considered to be in middle adulthood between 40-60 of age. Taking care of young children or adults (in some cases) plays a crucial role at this stage. Some people even become grandparents in this phase of life. Aging continues with many physical, sensory, reproductive, emotional, and married life changes during the stage of middle adulthood which is also known as 'mid-life crisis'.

Intimacy versus isolation is stage six in Erik Ericksons eight stages of human development. This stage takes place from approximately 19-40 years of age (Orlofsky, Marcia, & Lesser, 1973). The big question that people face in this stage is will I be loved or will I be alone. During this stage people start to develop more long term relationships. The psychosocial crisis during early adulthood is intimacy vs. isolation. Intimacy is defined as the ability to experience an open, supportive, tender relationship with another person without fear of losing one’s own identity in the process (Newman & Newman p. 468). Intimacy shares a bond between two people displaying confidence, respectful affection and shared goals. It is two people respecting each other’s differences and spiritual beliefs. Intimacy accepts each other’s flaws and experience a love outside of family.

Another theory of Erikson’s’ is that the successful completion of exploring relationships and developing one that is long term can lead to “happy relationships and a sense of commitment, safety, and care within a relationship. If, not accomplished, one can experience feelings of isolation, loneliness, and sometimes depression. (McLeod, S. 1970) Daniel Levinson contributes that a mid-life transition (occurring from 40-45) one’s life and its structure will be questioned.

In my first developmental assessment, Nicole (client) was 17 years old and identified as female, Caucasian and bisexual. She was seeking treatment to address issues related to anger, fear of abandonment, and impulsive and destructive behaviors (i.e. physical aggression, cutting, purging, sexual reactivity, and suicidal ideation). During adolescence, she received ADHD and bipolar diagnoses and showed borderline personality traits. She had been hospitalized on numerous occasions and at the time of the initial assessment, Nicole resided in an adolescent treatment center. This paper will identify normative developmental milestones from young adulthood to late, late adulthood and will analyze Nicole’s life according to these milestones. Therapeutic interventions for Nicole during young adulthood, middle adulthood, late adulthood, and late, late adulthood will also be discussed.

The definition of postformal thought is a type of thinking that is flexible, logical and allows young adults to think in way that can prepare them to solve their problems (Steinberg, Bornstein, Vandell, & Rook, 2011). I am in postformal thought stage of development because I have demonstrated acts of flexible, relativistic thinking when it comes to thinking of ways to pay for my college. For example, someone demonstrating postformal thought might way their options of staying with their current job or applying for a better paying job.

Middle adulthood is an unpredictable time and age that requires a multidimensional viewpoint to see the majority of the processes and changes that are occurring. There are many changes during this process which impede an individual physical, psychological and socially. I had given three interviews from people in different stages of their adulthood which include: early adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood. For early adulthood, I asked someone who was in one of my classes because I wanted to have the perspective of someone who was going through college and wanted to know how they viewed their goals. For middle adulthood, I asked my mother because since we have a close relationship, I would be able to elaborate more on her answers. For late adulthood, I had asked one of the residents from where I work at in assisted living. She was someone I had grown close to and had many conversations with, but I was curious to how some of her answers would be.

The life stage that I was assigned was young adulthood. Young adulthood is the life stage immediately following adolescence, beginning at age twenty and ending at age forty. Since these stages are so close together, the beginning of young adulthood can blend with the end of adolescence. However, the most prominent change is the shift from struggling to find out where you fit in as an adolescent to finding out who you are as an individual, apart from your parents, as a young adult.

Throughout the Human Behavior and the Social Environment course, we have encompassed the many stages of the life cycle process. Now that I am twenty two years old, I found the early adulthood stage to be the most influential, and the most sensible one to relate to given the point that I am at in my life. More importantly, I decided to research and apply this life cycle stage to a variety of milestones, experienced by my interviewee, Chelsie. Living just houses apart, being raised by single fathers, Chelsie and I found that we had many things in common. We have remained friends since we were children, and have only grown to be closer into our early adulthood years.
