The world’s first global conflict, World War 1 (1914-1918), opposed the Central Powers of Germany, Ottoman Empire, Austria and Hungary against the Allied forces of The United States, Great Britain, Russia, France, Japan and Italy. World War 1 was significant because of the initial appliance of modern technology into warfare; which consequently resulted in an unfathomable amount of soldiers’ deaths and multinational collateral damage. Through the introduction of multinational war, was the introduction of personal experiences and perspectives of all parties included. Although we may never know firsthand of the emotional pressure and frame of mind of the many individuals who endured the World War 1, we are fortunate in the amounts of historical artifacts, including literature written during those times, to help provide the future with an awareness and appreciation for those who sacrificed their lives for the world today.
Although the American’s had been “independent” from the British since the end of the Revolutionary War, the British continued to harass and mettle in American affairs. While Madison was seeking reelection the War Hawks in Congress had declared war on Britain in June 18. On paper the rag-tag American was seen as incapable of defeating the superior British forces for a second time. However this war would have an unexpected results as neither side would be the “victory”. Even the United States wasn’t able to gain any new territory to their growing collection and the borders were returned to the way they had been (status quo antebellum), Americans were able to declare victory in the War of 1812 because they were able to enter a
Conscription was first used in the United States during the American Civil War. The Union sought troops by offering cash rewards to enlistees. Support for conscription was not widespread in the North, and public resistance culminated in the Draft Riot of 1863. Afterward the draft was suspended with the end of the war in 1865, and it would not return until the beginning of world war I. The restitution of the draft was the result of U.S. entry into World War I in April 1917. The Selective Service Act, signed by President Woodrow Wilson on May 18, 1917, created the Selective Service System. In the beginning it targeting male citizens age 21 to 30, the draft was eventually expanded to include all able-bodied men age 18 to 45. After the armistice
The United States of America began to see the effects of Anglo-French War by the early 1800's. This European quarrel began affecting the United States shipping industry. Britain and France were violating neutral shipping rights of American merchants. They thought of America as weak due to inadequate time the nation had to develop. These violations were the first and primary provoking factors that led to war with Britain. There was reason that Britain became the target of US military rather that France. Britain has influenced Indians around Lake Michigan to resist white settlement. This was one of the primary reasons the English were chosen as our foe. Britain had the Indians do this as an
As for the Draft wanted men at the age between 21-45, must be at satisfactory “Pristine” health with no physical complications or illnesses. As these made combat very difficult(The National WWII Museum). The US Government and many people throughout the country believed they would be dragged into the Second World War eventually. As the war progressed more and more Men and some women were being Drafted, further growing what would become the greatest military in the world. All while not being in the war.
First and for most, when we examine the piece "Who's for the Game", one can immediately sense that the author's approach to war will be jovial, inviting, and supportive. This is confirmed in the first line of the piece when the author states "Who's for the game, the biggest that's played,". The effect that the rhetorical opening has on the reader is that it draws in attention and sparks curiosity. In addition, this upbeat, engaging attitude is also reflected through the multiple metaphors that the authors uses. For instance, the author compares war to football by saying "Who'll grip and tackle the job unafraid?", and "Who'll toe the line for the signal to 'Go!'". It is
“A missing German U-boat is lost no longer”(Washington Post). This recent headline appeared in the Washington Post on 19 September 2017. A once lost German U-boat was found off the coast of Belgium at the bottom of the North Sea. This U-boat contained the bodies of the twenty three commanding men of the submarine. Authorities say the submarine was hit and sunk by a naval mine on the upper deck. Throughout the course of World War 1, U-boats were used to their full capacity sinking more than three hundred and fifty ships, while only 13 U-boats were destroyed. According to the Washington Post, they have over seventy six million months users. As a result of these monthly subscribers, seventy six million
The Great War — World War I — has now blurred in the aggregate memory of Americans. Yet, to the degree that World War I is all around refered to by history specialists to clarify the causes of World War II, it is fitting — in fact vital — that investigation of World War II incorporate some gratefulness for American experience amid the First World War. Something else, the thanks may be shallow or fragmented; more
On December 7th, 1941 a daunting attack was afflicted upon the United States of America. It was a normal day just like any other at the beautiful naval base Pearl Harbor, located near Honolulu, Hawaii. Just minutes before 8 a.m. hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base. In just two hours, the Japanese pilots were able to destroy nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight large battleships, and over 300 planes. In addition, over 2,000 American soldiers lost their lives during the attack, as well as 1,000 soldiers being wounded. During this era, many countries were coping with extensive events and changes. The world had only just recently gotten out of the Great Depression which lasted for over ten years. Also, after the “War Guilt Clause” of the Treay of Versailles was signed in 1918 to end World War I, most of the blame for the war was awarded to Germany. This caused tension to build up over the next twenty years and due to a random act on Poland by Germany, World War II was declared. World War II lasted from 1939 until 1945 and was seen as one of the bloodiest wars the world has ever known. At first the United States did not want to be a part of the war because our nation seemed to follow a sense of neutrality when it came to the world wars but because of the attack on Pearl Harbor, our nation had no choice but to join. The day after the attack, the president at the time Franklin D. Roosevelt asked congress to declare war on Japan.
The definition of war is “a state of armed conflict between different nations, or states, or different groups within a nation, or state.” The phrase “armed conflict” is normally looked at with a negative connotation, as well as all the deaths and debts that come with war. But some wars better a country in the long run, like the Spanish American War. The action of this war began in April of 1898, and ended in August of the same year. If we are speaking technically we could say the foundation of this war began in the late 1400’s, when Spain founded the majority of the western hemisphere. This war lasted (on the battlefield) for only ten weeks, which is very short compared to other wars America has been involved in. Many people would never think of a war as significant, but the good that came out of The Spanish American War easily outweighs the bad. Don 't get me wrong, death is never a good thing, but if we look at the bright side, our country grew tremendously because of this war, as well as other countries. First of all, The United States positioned as a Pacific Power, and Spain’s power in the western hemisphere was taken away. America’s power was substantialized in the Caribbean Region because of our positioning in the Pacific, plus we were given the rights to Hawaii because of this war. Since the U.S. was drastically growing in the land aspect, America now had access to grow with, and learn from Asia. Also, The Treaty of Paris was created because of this war, which gave
The late nineteenth and early twentieth century saw a great deal of colonization of Asia and Africa by European powers, each trying to fulfill its own version of manifest destiny. England controlled vast holds in Africa, as well as India; the Belgians ruled the Congo; Germany, France, and Italy also held several African lands. These colonies funded a great part of the ruling countries' economies and provided foreign markets for European products, and expansion became necessary and desirable to advance the glory and the wealth of each European power. However, the land available diminished as Germany, France, England, Italy, and Belgium occupied increasingly large tracts of land. Oftentimes, border disputes would break out
The Great War, also known as World War I, was the first major military and international conflict between the world’s greatest powers. The conflict involved two main opposing alliances: The Triple Entente later known as the Allied Powers, formed by England, France, Russia, Italy, and the U.S.; and the Triple Alliance later known as the Central Powers, formed by Germany and Austria-Hungry. The Great War is one of the largest and more deadly conflicts in history with more than 15 million people killed and thousands more wounded. Furthermore, the conflict was intensified due to extreme nationalism, international rivalry, and alliances networks that facilitated suspicion between nations and developed a strong need for power. Moreover,
“It’s over. It’s all over,” yelled the paper route boy as he ran through the neighborhood. James Williamson’s jaw dropped. He was thirteen years-old living in New York City with his mom and his fourteen year-old sister, Elizabeth. “I’m so sad Dad couldn’t live to see this moment,” said James. His father had been killed along with the other 16 million casualties during the Great War. Mom came in from the other room wondering what all the ruckus was about. She saw James crying with joy, and he cried out, “The Great War is over! It’s all done!”
World War II was one of the deadliest wars in history lasting from September 1, 1939 until September 2, 1945 and left over 60 million civilians and military personnel dead (HistoryNet). World War II took the lives of many innocent civilians but it would lead to very important advances in the culture. This war was fought between the Allies and the Axis powers, the Allies had generals Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill while the Axis powers were lead by Hitler, Hirohito and Mussolini (HistoryNet). The start of World War II was Hitler’s invasion of Poland, this would cause Poland’s allies to declare war against German (HistoryNet). The Battle of Britain, Pearl Harbor, The Battle at Midway and Normandy would each shape the outcome of the war and
Some of the most precious gems in history are often overlooked or set aside. If a person asked any student their thoughts on a World War, the student would most likely respond with a negative reprisal of Adolf Hitler. What many students glance over is World War I; they fail to realize that without World War I, there would be no World War II. World War I alone is a precious piece of history, but when plumbing into the history historical documents become abundant. In World War I, letters were the way soldiers communicated with friends and family members they were separated from. The two articles that will be analyzed are letters exchanged between coworkers at the Great Western Railway.
