There can be underlying personal factors in an individual that may be a cause of poor personal hygiene. These range from physical and mobility issues, to physiological and financial issues. These are explained below.
Physical Factors
Many individuals understand the importance of personal hygiene but are unable to complete all the tasks required by themselves, paraplegics and amputees may have great difficulty in keeping personal hygiene to a high standard and may require assistance. Individuals with learning disabilities or mental health problems may not fully understand the importance of personal hygiene, and support workers would need to prompt the individuals to carry out personal care, informing them of the importance of maintaining high levels of Personal Hygiene. Individuals may experience temporary physical immobility such as suffering from broken bones, or recovering from an operation. In this case, family, friends or support workers can give support to them.
Individuals with mobility issues such as back problems or arthritis, may not be able to get in and out of showers and baths with ease, in this situation, individuals should be supported and assisted when required, using aids such as grab bars and slip proof mats.
Psychological Factors
Any mental health problem can affect a person’s ability and motivation to care for their personal hygiene needs. Anxiety, schizophrenia, Depression and other illnesses are known to possibly affect an
Keeping a good standard of personal hygiene is important for the prevention of the development and spreading of infection, illnesses and bad odours. Children are taught from an early age about personal hygiene and its importance at giving across a positive body image and to reduce the risk of being bullied. People don’t like to be talked about in
One of my preferred careers I endeavour to accomplish and become in the near future is a Medical Practitioner, more commonly known as Doctors. Medical Practitioners diagnose or identify the nature of a problem by examining the signs, for both mental and physical illnesses and then record their findings. Doctors are enabled to prescribe medications to their ill patients for a speedy recovery and to restore their weak immune systems. The job entails partaking in emergencies, attending meetings, and carrying out surgeries with the assistance of other doctors too. In some circumstances, doctors face horrible situations because of a patient’s wound or sickness which is why they are required to educate themselves about hygiene.
Patients come from a spectrum of personalities, leading to a spectrum of willingness or resistance to the multitude of requirements for cleaning and maintaining hygiene around the incision site. The efforts needed to maintain the incision site
Hand hygiene (HH) has been the center of infection control efforts over the past two decades. This paper will compare and contrast implementation, adherence, and outcomes in HH related infection control policies and procedures between hospitals and long-term care facilities (LTCFs). Hand hygiene (HH) describes a more inclusive practice than hand washing to cleanse hands. HH does not refer to surgical hand antisepsis performed in surgical settings. Hospital refers to acute care institutions offering inpatient care. LTCFs refer to institutions offering residential health care to individuals unable to manage independently in the community (Smith et al, 2008). Adherence is a
1: 58 undergraduate students of the University of Toronto were randomly assigned to either cleanliness group or the control. Participants in the cleanliness group were instructed to wipe hands clean with an antiseptic wipe while the control was not. Participants were then asked to rate 6 social issues.
The article written by Atici et al. (2014) studied compliance of hand hygiene of healthcare workers in the neonatal and pediatric intensive care unit in a hospital in Istanbul (p. 1). This study observed the compliance of hand
There is always room for improvement with hand hygiene and one can never wash their hands too much. Proper hand hygiene is critical to prevent the spread of infections. I believe the main reason their is noncompliance with this issue is forgetfulness. As healthcare providers we must be mindful of every situation we encounter and prevent spreading infections from one patient to the next. For example, when caring for a c-diff patient it's essential to understand that alcohol-based hand sanitizer is not effective in killing the germs. To prevent this type of infection washing hands with soap and water should be used before providing care to the next
Poor hand hygiene is a barrier to staff and patient infection control. Hand hygiene is the most observed infection prevention practice because it is the easiest to do and it can easily be monitored for efficacy (Carter et al., 2014). Hand hygiene compliance was introduced by the World Health Organization with monitoring before and after patient contact (Carter et al., 2014).
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), an estimated 1.7 million infections resulting in 99,000 deaths occur as a result of hospital acquired infections each year. The health care worker’s hands are the most common mode of transmission of healthcare-associated pathogens. Hand hygiene remains the leading preventive practice that can break the chain in the spread of hospital infections. However, this problem is still one of the most overlooked preventive measures in patient care. To improve the performance of hand hygiene among health care workers, performance barriers such as time, forgetfulness, and poor access to hand hygiene materials need to be addressed. Consistent performance improvement with this practice insures a reduction in infection rates and is a major component not only of patient protection, but healthcare providers as well.
As part of the training, all patients and their families will be briefed on the importance of proper hand hygiene. This will be done on admission on the unit and as needed during their stay on the unit. The patients will be asked to speak up and remind any staff to follow proper hand hygiene before providing clinical care. Patient involvement will also be used at the evaluation stage through feedbacks on hand hygiene performance by the staff.
Throughout the evolution, humans have moved through different stages of development. During some of these stages they have been regularly exposed to deadly pathogens. Nowadays, personal habits have improved thanks to strong chemicals and technological developments, which means that humans are cleaner than ever before.
Health and Hygiene go hand in hand and are equally important at any age. Seniors face a double whammy because they are more susceptible and become less capable over time. Noticing your senior parents hygiene is an early warning sign for other problems with their ability to care for themselves. Seniors who want to stay independent need to maintain good hygiene to keep healthy and control their own destiny.
The authors’ main objective was to conduct a study of how often people follow the handwashing hygiene protocol. This was a quantitative observational study from a cross-sectional approach in 4 colleges across the cities of Georgia, Chicago, Newyork, and Los Angeles. The study took place on June 09, 2009 during school hours.

Personal hygiene is very important for many reasons. One reason is if you don’t take care of your teeth, they could rot and possibly fall out. This would not be enjoyable because you would have to get false teeth or just never have teeth. It would be very challenging to eat without teeth. This could also result in having to pay very large amounts of money. Another reason hygiene is important is your hair. If you don’t take care of your hair, you can get very unhealthy hair and scalp issues such as “Dandruff”. Dandruff is small pieces of dead skin in a person 's hair. Signs of dandruff is a itchy scalp or white flakes in your hair. This is not because of dryness but because it’s usually the result of too much oil rather than too little in your hair. Taking showers can reduce getting dandruff because the water can wash the extra, not needed, oil out. Personal hygiene also includes just
