Veterinarian One major part of all peoples’ lives is health care, without it society would have no way of staying healthy and happy, and people would also have no way of treatment in case of an emergency. This also applies to all the pets’ lives are shared with. A certain profession is also needed to provide this care service for all of the animals. The people responsible for this service are Veterinarians. There is a lot to learn about the career of a veterinarian, including all of the schooling required, what a vet does, all of the advantages as well as the disadvantages, and the future outlook for this career. There is a lot of hard work put into this job, maintaining the health of all the animal patients. The overall job description of a veterinarian is a doctor who, “care[s] for the health of animals and work[s] to improve public health. They diagnose, treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of pets, livestock, and other animals” (Veterinarian). Vets also provide emergency care for injured animals as well as provide euthanization for animals unable to be treated effectively. There are several different kinds of vets, each with different daily tasks and patients to work on. The type of vet everyone usually first thinks of is a Clinical Vet, also known as a Companion animal Veterinarian. They treat regular household pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs, etc. This type of vet’s work environment usually includes being in private clinics and animal hospitals most of the time but can travel to farms and homes if needed. This is the most common field veterinarian students pursue. Another type is Equine Veterinarian. This type of vet focuses just on treating and caring for horses. They spend most of their times on ranches, and also at places like horse racing tracks and shows. Large Animal Veterinarians treat large farm animals such as horses, cows, sheep and pigs. The outlook of this job is predicted to grow substantially over the next years. “Employment of veterinarians is projected to grow 9 percent from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. Veterinarians will continue to be needed to diagnose and treat animals.” (Veterinarians; Career, Salary, and education information). The reason for veterinarians being in such a need in the future is because like there will always be people, those people will always have pets. Those pets will also always need someone to take care of them, just like all people will always need doctors. Veterinarians, in general, will always be needed but, different areas of the veterinary field will be needed differently in the future. For example, food and animal veterinarians (a type of Large Animal Veterinarian) will be especially in need in the future because as the population of the planet is always increasing, those people will always need food which requires a veterinarian to administer healthcare to those food-producing animals. Also, because colleges not only train vets in the study of treating animals they also train vets in fields such as public health, disease control, corporate sales, and population studies therefore if they do not have any interest in the more common fields they will almost certainly be able to find a decent job in another.
