Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky’s theory of cognitive development has both similarities and differences. Both Piaget and Vygotsky's theories of cognitive development offers explanations for a child’s cognitive learning styles and abilities. Their theories on cognitive development focus on the emphasis of children’s development. Jean Piaget said that children progress through different stages of cognitive development.While Piaget believed that based on maturation and experience proceed through four stages, Vygotsky believed differently. The four universal stages: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operation all start from birth through adolescence. Each stage represents a different way of thinking for the child. Thus, Piaget “argued that it was critical to also consider the changes in the quality of children’s knowledge and understanding as they move from one stage to another” (p 168). Vygotsky’s study mainly focused on social relations and one’s “personal/ individual” development. He stressed the importance of culture and language on one’s cognitive development. Vygotsky emphasized and believed that learning occurs along a spectrum. His theory of cognitive development focuses on the zone of proximal development and scaffolding.
