Water by the Spoonful, is a play that focuses on struggles of redemption. The main protagonist Elliot is damaged and is trying to deal with all his issues by not moving forward. The play shows Elliot trying to overcome his past, but it also shows that he’s having difficulties moving on. Scene one occurs in Swarthmore College, a private college located in Pennsylvania. The main protagonist Elliot is wearing a subway uniform. It seems that Elliot does not care about how others view him, or else he would’ve dressed up when going to an expensive college. Elliot seems anxious and is having second thoughts whether to stay and wait for Professor Aman or Leave and go to work. He brings up that, his “shift starts in fifteen”(14). Even though he works at Subway, he prefers being on time than staying and finding the translation of the phrase. When Professor Aman started asking Elliot about his past, Elliot seems very annoyed when answering the questions. When Professor Aman wanted to get into details, Elliot pushed him off by saying “I did enough Q&As about the service”(18). Although Professor Aman was steeping over his boundary in asking Elliot about his time in the marine, Elliot should have responded in a nicer way since the Professor was going to do a favor for Elliot. Professor was trying to dig deeper into Elliot’s time in the marine, in order to give him an offer. He offered him a position in a movie, but Elliot pushes it off. “If I have a minute, I’ll dial the digits”(18).
The purpose of this experiment was to determine the percent by mass in a hydrated salt, as well as to learn to handle laboratory apparatus without touching it. The hydrated salt, calcium carbonate, was heated with high temperature to release water molecules. Gravimetric analysis was used in this experiment to determine the percent by mass of water in a hydrated salt. The hypothesis of this experiment was accepted on the basis that the percent by mass of volatile water in the hydrated salt would be fewer than 30%. The percent by mass was determined by the mass of water loss devised by the mass of hydrated salt multiplied by total capacity
Water, although often taken for granted, is the lifeline of Earth. All carbon-based life requires some quantity of water to survive. However, in John Knowles’ A Separate Peace, water signifies much more than survival. The novel opens with Gene Forrester visiting The Devon School, his old boarding school. During the visit, Gene visits a marble staircase, as well as a tree, both of which cause him to recall memories of his old friend, Phineas. Gene tells his Devon memories, water becomes a key symbol in the story. Clean water, dirty water, snow, and bodies of water encapsulate Gene’s childhood recollections. Connections between water and Gene’s childhood began at the start of the novel, developing all the way through it, establishing water as
The pay Water by the Spoonful is social significance of crack cocaine addiction. The play Water by the Spoonful is about four crack cocaine addicts who are recovering their crack cocaine addiction together. They chat online and tell each other their daily struggles. Odessa is a janitor who has a son who came back from the military name Elliot. Odessa is like the mother of the three other recovering addicts. Another social significance in the play is Elliot’s addiction to pain medication. Elliot got injured in the Iraq war and they prescribe him some medications which he later became addicted. This shows the issue that many veterans face when they come back home. Even those people who aren’t veterans who also become addicted to their prescribe
The story “A Long Walk To Water” by Linda Sue Park, took place in the years 1985 to 2009. A theme that comes up in the story is survival. In the story, Salva is one of the characters that faces the theme. Many things helped him survive, but the most important factor in his survival is his uncle. Linda Sue Park shows that Salva survived because of the help his uncle gave him along the way, he survived with the help the lady he called auntie offered him when she gave him shelter in the barn and helped him join a group to stay away from war. His survival in the story was also shown when the boy brought him down in the river almost drowning him but ended up saving his life.
One important factor in A Long Walk to Water that helps Salva survive is his motivation from the loss of his family/friends. After Salva loses Uncle and Mariel, Salva continues as a stronger and more self-dependent man. As it states in A Long Walk to Water, “Mariel and Uncle were no longer by his side, and they never would be again, but Salva knew that both of them would have wanted him to survive, to finish the trip and reach the Itang refugee camp safely. I was almost as if they had left their strenge with him, to help him on the journey….But there was no doubt: Beneath his terrible sadness, he felt stronger” (Park, 65). This proves that the death of Uncle and Mariel strengthen Salva and motivated him to keep going. If Uncle and Mariel
People find their purpose through the struggles they face in life. Salva from a Long Walk to Water was caught in the middle of the Sudanese was and experienced many hardships as a Refugee, later when he grew up, he helped others in Africa lessen their struggles. In the same way, Samuel, a disabled child who relied on his brothers to get him to school, wants to become someone that can help others like him to go to school and learn. Both people faced struggles and wanted others to not face the same struggles that they had.
In their relationship Yaz is very much open to Elliot, but Elliot is reluctant to open up entirely. Yaz works at a private college, she has the resources to help Elliot find a better life and job. She cares about him and doesn’t mind helping him with whatever problem, but Elliot refuses to accept any of her generosity. When Elliot was trying to find a translation of a phrase, Yaz asked one of the members in her committee for help and to meet up with her and Elliot. At that moment Elliot could have told Yaz about the phrase and about the troubles he is having, but instead
Struggling is a natural occurrence in everyday life. Take Salva Dut from A Long Walk to Water as an example. At the early age of eleven, he was separated from his family during a school shooting, later leading over fifteen hundred young boys across the Southern Sudan desert as teenager. In the documentary On the Way to School, a prime example would be young Jackson Saikong. Every school day, he would have to lead his sister on a nine mile journey, racing past aggressive elephants at only the age of ten. From Linda Sue Park’s A Long Walk to Water to the documentary On the Way to School, many of the characters featured show strong motivation toward their struggle, not wanting it to be meaningless any longer, thus finding their purpose through their goal.
When kids make worthy decisions and persevere at the beginning of their lives, they will live satisfactory lives as adults. In A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, Salva walks lengthy distances to survive in a place where water is always scarce. Salva’s father needs clean water to survive a severe disease. Water is always crucial for Salva so he starts an organization to obtain water for the people of his hometown because he doesn’t want the future generation of his country to face water scarcity like he did. In On the Way to School, many of the characters have struggles which they go through and those characters hope that others won’t need to suffer from those same difficulties so they make it their purpose. When people struggle, work hard,
My question is: How and to what extent can everyday Americans help and support Sudanese refugees in and outside of America? I finished reading A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, and after, arrived at this question. A Long Walk to Water was based on a true story about an 11 year old boy who had to flee his home and walk his way to safety. It was 1985 and a war broke out. Sadly, it came to his village when he was in school. The school master told them to run away as fast as they could. He ended up walking for 19 years. His struggles and perseverance through that time in his life are beyond impressive. It made me think how privileged we are in America. Next, I thought what can we do to help more people like this? He ends up making it to
He talked about a situation in which he was on a train and it was overbearingly hot. Also, he spoke of a movie that was unfocused and when he was not serviced at a skiing resort.
Water is essential for life as we know it on earth. It is used by plants
“Follow the Drinking Gourd” by H. B. Parks is one of the hundreds of slave spirituals. Slaves worked long and demanding hours, faced physical punishments, lived in a crude one-room log cabin with few furnishings, wear shabby clothing, were highly susceptible to deadly diseases, and eat a diet with limited fresh foods (Nash 2017, 239). Their lives were burdensome. To help cope with and make sense of their lives slaves came together to form a community with its own culture distinct from that of their masters. A key element of this culture was spirituals. Spirituals not only helped slaves understand their situation, but they also severed as a release from their suffering. Spirituals being biblically based point to the slaves’ strong faith in
Almost everyone goes through a new transition in their lives; many experience a new challenge, a new journey, and new friends. The transition is not easy and many struggle to fit into a strange environment. We all have that feeling of shock and nervousness when entering in a whole different world or society. It is nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed of it is a common emotion that human face when facing new obstacles. Doc Hendley, founder of Wine to Water was an ordinary person who struggled to find a purpose of his life, until one friend inspired him to do something with his life that would change his destiny forever. That inspiration has turn Hendley into a world-wide
This paper discovers the water budget for Berkeley, California in comparison to Terre Haute, Indiana. The two cities precipitation differs throughout the twelve month calendar year where many of the heavy precipitation months are totally opposite. Berkeley California’s winters, where the majority of rain occurs and Terre Haute, Indiana where the rainfall is observed as consistently disseminated throughout the year evenly. This paper will also magnify geographic position, climate and elevation in contrast of the two cities that reflects the water budget outlined in Project 1: Water Balance defined in
