What are some principles that you place the most value on in your own life? H. L. Mencken argued that to several people safety is prioritized over many essential ideals when he wrote “The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe”. But just how accurate is this observation and accusation when applied to modern society? There are numerous instances where people sacrifice freedom for safety, like in the case of vaccination and immunization programs for students in the United States before attending public schools. The states enforce these programs in the attempt to safeguard and regulate the health of its citizens. Several cases, like the measles outbreak that caused the death of six children among the Faith Tabernacle community as a result of an absence of vaccination, help support and justify the application of these programs by our officials. Some individuals argue though that these programs restrict religious freedoms along with the rights of parents to make choices in regards to their children. These citizens reason by stating that requiring children to do something that is undesirable to their religious principles and practices, like receiving these inoculations, places a significant and unnecessary affliction on their free-exercise rights given to them in the 1st amendment when it states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”.
