Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States as well as one of the founding fathers. However, what he is most accredited for is being the main author of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson was a Christian, but he did not advertise it to the public often. He was raised an Anglican but was influenced by many other prospectives of Christianity. Thomas Jefferson was of English decent. However, his family was deeply rooted in Virginia. Jefferson’s father was a surveyor and cartographer and his mother managed his large family. Thomas Jefferson was one of eight children and his father passed when he was only seventeen years old. His two most well known mistakes were his faulty negotiations with pirates and his embargo that destroyed the economy. By the time Thomas Jefferson’s second term in office rolled around war was about to break out. This is what is most commonly referred to as the War of 1812. Jefferson’s mistakes had a great impact on his reputation and people started doubting his ability to run the county successfully. Thomas Jefferson did not have the best of reputations, as he was not one to keep his word. Jefferson’s biggest weakness was that he made many promises that he could not stick to. There is often more to history than just what you read in your textbook. I love finding out things about people in history that your average history student might not know or even care about. As I did research on Thomas Jefferson, I found many things that I consider to be quite interesting. I would like to share them with you so that you can learn something new. Especially something that not every one who has taken this class could tell you. You may not know it but Thomas Jefferson was a grandfather to twelve children. Many of which lived with him. Jefferson was known to be a wonderful grandfather who loved his family very dearly. He loved having fun and would often organize races for the children on the front lawn of Monticello, as well as teach them how to play chess and other games of that time.
