I am not here to tell you to stop using social media because of all its adverse effects, rather I wish to convince you to put social media to good use by raising the awareness of a cause to help make a difference to the lives of others.) This is because social media is an increasingly important channel for charities and social enterprises. a. I’m sure all of you are familiar with this example. The Ice Bucket Challenge, which went viral on social media between July to August 2014. The challenge involved the dumping of a bucket of ice water onto one’s head. Nominated participants would have to film themselves doing the challenge and upload it onto social media in 24 hours, failing which, they would have to forfeit by way of a financial donation. The donations would serve as funding for the research of the disease, amytrophic lateral sclerosis. The challenge also raised the awareness of the disease to the public. i. In a survey given out to the class, more than 90% of you did not know about the disease before the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. ii. 83% of you either agree or somewhat agree to the idea of the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise the awareness of the disease. iii.
