What Is The Impact Of Benjamin Franklin's Last Speech

Benjamin Franklin is widely known for being the face of the one-hundred U.S dollar bill. Benjamin Franklin is mainly recognized for his scientific achievements, and how those impacted the world. What many do not know is how Benjamin Franklin impacted the United States with his final speech on September 17th, 1787. He made an eye opening quote in that speech, “Our new Constitution is now established, everything seems to promise it will be durable; but, in this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.” In 1787, a Convention was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This Convention, was the Constitutional Convention. The Constitutional Convention’s purpose was for delegates from all thirteen colonies to agree on a constitution. The delegates did a lot of research on governments throughout history, in order to find a government fit for the colonies. The convention took many days, even months, to finish because the delegates would only share what they want, not listen to what others had to say, “tempers flared and interests clashed as the delegates spoke their opinions” (“Appeal for Prayer”). After many weeks of wasted time and no progress, Benjamin Franklin took a stand. He made an appeal for prayer. This appeal was so the delegates would pray before every meeting in the day. Rhode Island did not sign the Constitution until many months after the Constitutional Convention. On the last day of the Convention Benjamin Franklin made his final, and most important speech of his life. Franklin started his speech with, “I confess that I do not entirely approve of this Constitution at present, but Sir, I am not sure I shall never approve it” (Speech of Benjamin Franklin).
