When Harry met Sally Based on the communication styles listed in your text (Closed, Open, Hidden & Blind), please match a character to each of these styles. List the character, and then support your answer with a specific example. Closed Communication Style- Marie shows signs of representing a “closed communication style” because she spends most of her time in the film overly obsessed with a married man. She has a hard time recognizing the fact that he is married and stays in the “relationship” with him even though it has no clear destination. Hidden Communication Style- I witnessed two examples of hidden communication thru out the movie. One example, when Harry is persistent about questioning Sally’s life and never really …show more content…
Provide 3 signs of poor listening seem throughout the film. Provide ways that their listening could be improved. One sign of poor listening that I remember, was each time Marie talked about her boyfriend and Sally tried to tell her that the he would never leave his wife; Marie appeared to listen but refused to take the advice to leave him. She could of maybe did some compare and contrast to her relationship and others to realize that Sally was right. If she would have listened to her, she would have saved herself the emotional rollercoaster and maybe could have found a man sooner. The second sign of poor listening was when the two couples were exiting the restaurant from their double date. Harry and Sally both expressed, separately, to Jess and Marie that it would be better for them to wait to call each other to protect the feelings of Harry and Sally. Jess and Marie obviously couldn’t wait to be together, so they got in the first cab they saw and drove away together. This illustration of poor listening could have been improved if Jess and Marie took Harry and Sally’s advice and waited a little bit to see each other again. The third sign of poor listening I witnessed was during one of Harry and Sally’s many conversations. He told her that it was merely impossible for a woman and a man to be friends. He stated that sexual relations would basically occur no matter what. Sally eventually forgot about, (and Harry as well
The main character Hitch gives the most information on communication within the film. Throughout the movie one hears Hitch explaining that in any relationship listening is very important. In the opening scene we see an actor listening to his date on their walk showing that by listening one is able to form a better relationship with
Pride and Prejudice tells a story of a young girl in the midst of a very materialistic society. Jane Austen uses the setting to dramatize the restraints women had to endure in society. As the novel develops, we see how women have to act in a way according to their gender, social class, and family lineage. Elizabeth Bennet’s sisters represent the proper societal lady while Lizzy is the rebel. Through her characters Austen shows how a women’s happiness came second to the comfort of wealth. As the plot develops, events are laid out to illustrate how true love is unattainable when women marry for intentions of wealth. Women have very specific and limited roles in a society where men are the superior. In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen
The fourth interpersonal communication that was used throughout the movie is listening. There is a contrast between simply tuning in and hearing what others are stating. “Listening is making sense of others spoken messages.” (Adler & Rodman, 2015) In any case, listening isn't generally
Listening is the conscious processing of the auditory stimuli that have been perceived through hearing or an effort to hear something. Throught the movie there are countless scenes that involve the concept of listening, but the one rigorous that stood out was the scene where the NCAA investigator is asking Michael questions. He implied,” She asked a lot of questions but never asked why he wanted to go to Ole Miss and the reason he wants to go there is beacuse that’s where his family went and she stood there in silence and had to listen to what he had to
This shows just how little he cared for such matters, writing off the topic of marriage so trivially. Meursault continues on to say to the reader that “she was the one who was doing the asking and all I was saying was yes.” (Camus 41-42). He justifies his lack of excitement or romance by stating that only Marie asked about, implying that he did not care for having a tight, emotional relationship with his lover, Marie. Marie plays the source of the love between them, while Meursault simply listens and enjoys in the pleasure of having her, but still feeling indifferent to her actual emotions. This downplay on their relationship and her feelings demonstrate that Meursault does not value anything of Marie below surface level and that he lacks the need for a warmer connection between them.
In “x” scene, John is not displaying effective listening. According to Inter-Act’s chapter, Listening Effectively, listening is, “the

The book further touches on the abilities of Marie to be narrow minded and ultra nationalistic when she goes to a book store to buy her brother a Christmas gift. Although the book store is labeled in French and every sign around and in it are French Marie cannot be comfortable. She finds in her to even hate the people in the store looking at the English books, "it gave her the creeps" (Basilieres 119). She goes on to describe the readers as "opium smokers: calm [and] contented" (Basilieres 119) almost giving the reader the thought that she likes there to be the opposite, chaos. I believe Marie is also depicted as a heartless and cruel person. Heartless and cruel when she realizes the diplomat was afraid of her (Basilieres 245) and "when he pleaded and cried for release she struck him." (Basilieres 250) She was even more cruel and heartless when she "beat him with her free hand, twisting the chain" (Basilieres 263) and asking "where's god now." (Basilieres 263) "She was incapable of sympathy" (Basilieres 264) and she performed the act "as coldly as drowning an unwanted kitten." (Basilieres 264) Marie is not as hard-line as some of the other members of her cell, like Hubert whom she feels she owes to do what he would have done after his death, in that she is touched by her mothers sorrow over the loss of her father and it is this human side of her that drives her to leave the house in order to deal with what she
However, in the other remaining parts of the book, the reader can observe the different techniques that Dr. Petersen provides what is related to listening, using the many different examples especially in the issues that it raise in groups of people. There cannot be a better description on how Dr. Petersen
We all know how hard it is to listen activity most of all of us are bad listeners. In this film it illustrated many characteristics of listening and showed that if you’re a bad listener things can go horribly wrong. It takes practice and patience to be an active listener but it’s not impossible so why don’t you give it a
An instance when I was an ineffective listener was when my boyfriend and I took a roadtrip to the beach and got completely lost. I had thought that I was going the right direction and didn’t listen to my boyfriends input. It turned out that I had missed my exit and had actually passed where I was supposed to go. I had somewhat of a bias against him since he ALWAYS gets lost so I didn’t think it was important to listen. The effect on my partner was anger and frustration. The long-term effects are that I am no longer in charge of directions when we drive together and his entitled opinion that he is the “Master of the Road”. If this event were to happen again, I would definitely change my approach by trying to avoid judging too soon.

To address the verbal and nonverbal interaction among the members of a group the video titled “Annie” best illustrates this. In the video there is clearly both listening and miscommunication going on. The setting of this video is that the title character, Annie is a high school girl, who seems to be suffering from a possible eating disorder as well as depression (Understanding Relationship- Helping Annie, 2008). A nurse from a school has called upon a meeting with a psychiatrist and a social worker to seek out a possible treatment plan for Annie.
