Why Cell Phones Should Be Allowed In School

What’s the big deal about having phones in class? Why do a lot of teachers hate students having them in class so much? Almost every day, at least one of my teachers has my class get out our devices to use an educational app. While it’s true that cell phones can cause distractions for students, they should be allowed in class because a ton of assignments are done on phones, they can be very helpful during emergencies, and they can help prepare a child for a future job.

Cellphones could be so much simpler at schools. There are an abundance of rules into play. Students get the device taken on a daily. Many teachers today would like the ban lifted so that the phone can be used as a teaching tool and not labeled as a distraction. School systems fail to realize that phones are more useful than the outdated books. When there are fewer resources in schools, there are more students needing to use the devices. Why not put the devices up for the test? Phones are here for a reason.

The rewards from using cell phones can be great, but by using them we may not reach whatever goal we have set because they can hinder us from making it there. Using a cell phone in class makes it that much easier to cheat on a test. How easy it is for someone to just pull out his or her phone and Google an answer while the teacher isn’t looking. Also a student may be able to take a picture of their test or work if they have their cell phone on them, and then able to send it to other students. Efforts to incorporate cell phone in the classroom is quickly gaining momentum (Compoy and Harte A.3). In a 2013 poll of 2600 schools, 10 percent of the schools were allowing to use mobile devices this is up from 3 percent in 2010 (Compoy and Harte A.3). Students of today seem more connected to their wireless devices. For many years teens have been using smartphones in various ways from tweeting to watching YouTube videos (Arnett p. 3). Cell phones can be an excellent learning tool that most students are already comfortable using. While some studies say that cellular phones harm students academically, using them in the classroom gives students 24/7 access to their assignments via various apps, the ability to complete them on the move along with allowing instructors to connect with students in a way students understand.

Are cells phones an important part of learning for students? Phones and/or other electronic device are things that people are overly devoted to. Students are the main ones who are reliable on their phone for information and trending topics. The reliability on phones for students is tremendous and creates ways for students to learn topics that are far from being leaned by teaching. Learning on a phone is an easy access although for some it is not when students do not have the possession of one. These devices are the main problem in school that provoke whether students should or shouldn't be allowed to use them in class. People strongly believe that phones should not be allowed in school while others presume that phones should be used. Phones can be beneficial when used in class to enhance the learning of students.

Smartphones have been a big part of our lives for many years. Some of us had purchased one of the very first smartphones and continued to upgrade over time, and others were born into the world with smartphones being an everyday item. They have impacted our lives in many ways. We use them to learn new information, to keep in touch with family, to learn what’s going on in the world, or even just to escape from the world. But what new ways have we been using the smartphone instead of for entertainment? Some of the generations after us are raised with smartphones and they know them like the back of their hand. Many people have been thinking that maybe they’ll have a bigger advantage if they used their smartphones during school, and there are a select group of people that think that kids are addicted to their phones and should have less time with them. Many schools still don’t allow their students to bring electronic devices to their classes but there are some that like to use smartphones as a study tool so that the students interact and understand the lesson more. Education systems are slowly but surely changing their way and adding smartphones to their daily lessons to help improve students’ academic life.

In today’s generation, more and more children are receiving cell phones before the age of 12. The use of cell phones in schools today are not just for texting and social media but as teaching aids. In the past there were not a vast amount of technology or cell phones but a lot has changed in the last 20 years. More and more classrooms today have many different forms of technology that is used to give students the best form of education. In schools, today there is access for many classrooms to have iPads, laptops, smartphones, and projectors in the classroom. The teachers are becoming more lenient toward the ideas of having technology within the class. The access to technology in the classrooms allows students to learn in many different ways. I believe that we as educators need to stop telling our students to put their phones away so much and allow them to use the item that their eyes are glued on to enhance their learning.

Cell phones have been an issue for schools ever since they were first created in 1973. Although, they weren’t as popular back then, they still had an affect on learning. Smart phones have taken over. It is not a bad thing though. People look at smartphones in different ways depending mainly on when they were born. Lots of teachers like to use the phrase “I survived without a cell phone.” Yet here they are with a smartphone in hand. To be honest I think a lot of teachers are hypocritical about the entire issue. Some take students phones away and then turn around and text someone. Which I think is just rude. If teachers want to completely ban cell phones from schools that should include them too. To me it’s just about respect. If you aren’t on your phone during class, I can live without mine.

Cell phones have been a part of most lives for many years and can be very useful for education. Most cellular devices have some type of writing or studying app available for download. Even though parents may discourage them, they can help their kids more than they may believe. Most schools do not include these devices in their education program because of problems caused by them. However, they can offer apps that can be more lucid than a standard educator! Cell phones have expanded to become a pro education tool with many award-winning education apps that have expanded the world of education tremendously. Many of these tools are free and available to kids that cannot afford education, helping them expand their education. In many ways, cell phones can be educational.
