Why Do Professional Athletes Get Paid Too Much

Are Athletes getting paid too much? Some would say yes, some would say no. Athletes are paid based off their skills, talent and their work ethic. I believe it’s what drives kids and or students to strive to be their very best because they as student athletes can only dream of a life like this. One sport where people athletes are overpaid is Major League Baseball. Baseball players are given vasts sums of money based on their performance, however there are many other reasons that I personally feel qualifies them for high salaries other than performance.

College sports bring in a massive amount of revenue. Because of this, the argument of athletes deserving some of the income arrises. Some believe that “everyone associated with [college football] is getting rich except the people whose labor creates the value” (Lewis). Many say that the NCAA is there to “ensure that the universities it polices keep all the money for themselves” (Lewis). They think that it is unfair for athletes to put so much into the game and receive nothing out of it. Their argument fails to see the expenses the athletes and sports generate. But wouldn’t you think that people, like doctors, would earn 5.15 million dollars for saving people’s lives every single day, and professional football players would make $189,000 - $258,000? It is actually the other way around. Professional athletes started to get paid for playing sports in the 1920’s, which is when people started to actually notice them, and they were paid, on average, 5,000 dollars a year. Now don’t get me wrong, getting paid to entertain people in fine. But today, they get paid 5.15 million dollars a year, just by playing sports. I think that might be going a little bit overboard. In my opinion, professional athletes get paid too much.

One key factor is that much of the revenue that people make in whatever they do is put towards sports, whether it is the merchandise, the actual games, and putting money into the different types of items that are advertised during all the games. Most people would agree with me that profesional sports are some of the most entertaining things on this earth. But there are some people who would disagree because it is all based on opinion, but if I had to guess most people would be with me that sports are the most entertaining thing on this earth. I believe professional athletes get paid the perfect number for what they do. There are some people who disagree with me, but in my opinion they get paid the perfect amount.

There are millions of people who save lives while a handful who are athletes. There are other dangerous jobs that do not get as much money as athletes. Firefighters who pull little kids out of burning buildings didn’t get that much.” As one can see athletes get paid too much compared to an average family. Doctors, who work so hard to take care of little children and adults, don’t get as much money either.Athletes should not get paid too much as there are other dangerous jobs that don’t get as much money as athletes.
