Why Should College Athletes Be Paid Essay

College athletics is a billion dollar industry and has been for a long time. Due to the increasing ratings of college athletics, this figure will continue to rise. It’s simple: bigger, faster, stronger athletes will generate more money. College Universities generate so much revenue during the year that it is only fair to the players that they get a cut. College athletes should get paid based on the university’s revenue, apparel sales, and lack of spending money.

College athletes generate millions of dollars for their schools each year, yet they are not allowed to be compensated beyond a scholarship due to being considered amateurs. College athletes are some of the hardest working people in the nation, having to focus on both school courses and sports. Because athletics take so much time, these student-athletes are always busy. College football and basketball are multi-billion dollar businesses. The NCAA does not want to pay the athletes beyond scholarships, and it would be tough to work a new compensation program into the NCAA and university budgets. College athletes should be compensated in some form because they put in so much time and effort, generating huge amounts of revenue.

Athletes today are remarkably faster and stronger than ever before. There is a man named Haile Gebrselassie who ran a marathon in 2 hours. Mike Powell has a long jump record of 29 ft.These athletes are setting new records, creating high standards and making names for themselves. When it comes to college athletes, there is a lot of thought about whether they should get paid for all of their hard work and revenue they bring into their schools. These athletes are making names for themselves and for their schools, but they aren’t professionals. College sports are the pathway to possibly becoming a professional and making a career out of athletics. Although they aren’t professionals, they work hard every day and don’t have time to make any kind of other money. Should these athletes get paid on top of scholarships and other benefits for playing their sport?

How would you feel if you were on your own, given a place to sleep, are working hard at school and in a physical activity, but were never given any wage for how hard you worked physically, and going to bed almost emaciated? The sad truth is that this actually is the case for some college students playing sports. Do you think that college athletes should be paid? This was the article that I chose to read. These college students at no time collect any type of salary for working hard for other people. I feel that these college students never should go to bed hungry, and should be paid for being on their college's sports teams.

College athletics are a huge part of the culture of the university and sports. The best of the best high school athletes go on to compete at an even bigger platform and competition through college sports. Universities put in money through recruitment to find the right kind of athlete for their school. These athletes, through all their hard work and commitment, are rewarded different scholarships to continue their sports. At the top level of college sports, athletes receive a plentiful scholarship of full tuition and room and board. That type of scholarship can range from $100,000 to even a $180,000 depending on the school. Other students at the same university, who are not playing sports, are expected to cover this tuition themselves. This large sum encourages athletes to put all their time and resources to the sport that they came to school to play. Even with the scholarship money that is given, some believe that college athletes should be paid to play their sports. This is a problem especially at the highest levels in NCAA football and basketball. NCAA sports have a unique competitive atmosphere that also encourages education; however, that would be lost if college athletes were being paid to play.

In America people are paid for virtually anything nowadays; but for some reason we hold our superiorly achieving college athletes to a different moral standard where they showcase their highly profitable talents for free. There has been a major discussion recently if a college athlete should earn money while they are in school. Many people think that College athletes , but it is better for college athletes to paid for many reasons. College athletes should be paid because the NCAA is a billion dollar enterprise. The National Collegiate Athletic Association has its fair share of strict rules and policies it must go by. Some of these rules are fair to the athletes considering the context, but some are absolutely ridiculous. For example, McMullen showed this situation, “If you’re a backup kicker for the 2017 national champion UCF Knights, and you can make money on YouTube with trick-shot videos, NCAA President Mark Emmert and his $2 million salary shouldn’t give you an ultimatum between that and your scholarship.” This student athlete came up with a creative way to make money for himself in his free time by doing trick shot videos on his YouTube account, but when the NCAA found out about this, they made him choose between his scholarship and his source of income. He had to choose his scholarship in order to complete his degree. There was a situation where an athlete named Kanavis McGhee’s mother could not afford her rent so he asked his football recruiter John Luchs to help him out. Luchs helped him with hope to build a bond with this kid and hopefully get him to join his team. John Luchs was eventually caught and suspended for his actions of paying players and doing a good deed to help an athlete who did not have enough money in his family

To verify all of this, college athletes are manipulated every day. Student athletes are working day in and day out to meet academic standards and to keep their level of play competitive. We as athletes need to be rewarded and credited for their achievements. Not only are athletes not being rewarded but they are also living with no money. Because the athletes are living off of no money they are unable to resist to taking money from boosters and others that are willing to help them out. College athletics need a reform. Student athletes need to start being rewarded monetarily for their hard work and dedication. They have limited time to work, and somehow, they need to make money. If the athletes are allowed to receive money for their commitments, then it will allow them to have spending money to enjoy themselves when they do have free

Do you think it is unfair that college athletes work so hard and don’t get paid? Yes, it is unfair because they literally work over half of their week practicing and they never have time to get a job and provide for themselves, and never get to see their families and friends and they miss holidays and birthdays. While some believe college athletes are already fairly compensated through scholarships and other perks. College athletes should get paid because college sports are like a jobs, and you are their so much you don't have time to get a job. Also they work so hard they deserve some money!
