An ethical dilemma is defined as a moral issue, where a situation has two equivalent undesirable alternatives and neither choice will resolve the ethical predicament. Lupe Garza, mother of two children, is a temporary employee at a plant. Garza is an excellent and talented worker, and supervisors have taken notice in her skills. A human resource specialist named Sara Jones, mislead Garza in thinking she would unquestionably obtain a permanent job position at the plant, causing Garza to turn down another job opportunity. During the interview, Garza is truthful and informs Mark Solomon, a human resource specialist, that she is currently using someone else’s identity in order to work legally and her real name is Carmen Mendoza. Mark Solomon’s conflict is whether he should hire or let go of the illegal worker, turn Garza into the authorities, or just ignore the situation. After the interview, Mark is faced with an additional ethical dilemma, the knowledge of other workers working in the plant under different names. Now, the human resource specialist must face, whether the plant should stop hiring temporary illegal workers and run into staffing problems, or continue hiring these workers and face legal allegations by breaking the law. The plant is breaking the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA). The law was passed to control or prevent illegal immigration in the United States. Furthermore, the law prohibits employers to knowingly hire unauthorized workers. The plant is breaking the law because they are responsible for reviewing, confirming, and verifying employee’s eligibility. The plant needs to use the I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, which assist employers in identifying if workers are citizen or non-citizens of the United States. Another law the plant may be violating is the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. This law “forbids discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin” (Noe, Hollenback, Gerhart & Wright, 2011). According to the case, the plant employs approximately 1,500 workers and one third of the workforce is Hispanic (Fransson, Gareett & Noll, 2005). The plant mostly hires Hispanic to
The ethical dilemma in the case of “Will the Real Lupe Garza Please Stand Up” is whether or not to hire Carmen Mendoza for a permanent full-time position at RW Printing after it is revealed that she unlawfully used the identity of “Lupe Garza” to gain legal status for employment purposes. If Carmen is not hired for the position, she will not be able to support her children as the sole caretaker and provider. If Carmen is hired, RW Printing could potentially face a multitude of legal repercussions as well as a devastating decline of its workforce. Mark Solomon, an RW Printing HR specialist, must make a moral decision, but also not illegal, to help protect himself and the company. He is forced to make a decision on whether to leave Carmen and her family without a home with the possibility of deportation, or engage in illegal activities by hiring an undocumented worker.
Moral Dilemma to me, means having to make an ethical decision between what is considered right and what is considered wrong.
What is a moral dilemma? A moral dilemma is a man versus self conflict. It is when a character has to perform two different actions, but they can not perform both actions because it is not possible. Authors use moral dilemmas in their writings to retain the reader’s interest in the book or play and to have the reader ask questions. People often face many life altering choices such as right versus wrong or good versus bad. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, John Proctor chooses to die because he does not want to blacken his name throughout Salem and to ruin his sons’ names when they grow up.
In this assignment, I will discuss the Atlantic Shrimp Company EEO policy and determine if the company is in compliance with the Federal Government laws pertaining to discriminatory policies in the workplace. I will provide information about what the federal laws are pertaining to hiring workers in the United States; and what requirement are mandated. I will highlight what agencies enforce discrimination in the workplace and what statues and regulations The Atlantic Shrimp company are obligated to enforce. The Atlantic Shrimp company has been found to employ all Caucasian’s workers under the age of 40, and have stated all employees or applicants are required to have a minimum of a high school diploma or a GED.
An ethical dilemma is a debate between two moral principles, where two sides can dispute about what is wrong or what is right. However, there is no real answer to an ethical dilemma. Is it a “simple” matter of what one believes in? The best answer would be, in ethics, it is not always simple. Ethics have a propensity to engage in moral reasoning, performing critical examination of different beliefs, in order to determine whether they should be accepted or rejected. Abortion is considered an ethical dilemma. It is examined by two different groups, which have two different perspectives; Pro-Life versus Pro-Choice.
One reason why I think Lupe is a good role model is because she is very intelligent. As proof, Lupe’s academic grades are straight A’s. This shows that Lupe is intelligent because not many people get straight A’s on their report card every year of school. Secondly, Lupe is intelligent because she has won multiple awards. For example, Lupe won the school spelling bee, she won the blue ribbon award in the science fair, she was the winner of a reading contest at the library three summers in a row, she was also the top student in her piano recital, and she was the playground champion of chess. Talk about a ton of awards, right? Lupe feels like none of these awards mean anything though. Lupe wishes she could win some type of award in athletics, so that she can keep up with the other girls in her school, that’s why Lupe is working towards her goal of being the marble champion. Also, in one case in the story, when Lupe was playing marbles on her bed, she figured out that her bedspread was slowing down the marbles as she shot them. This
1. An ethical dilemma occurs when two moral imperatives contradict one another. In the case of the Scopes Trial, for example, while the Bible stated that God created humans on the sixth day of creation, Darwinian evolution argued that humankind evolved through natural selection over a period of millions of years. This dilemma created a heated debate that impacted the entire country. Describe the circumstances and developments that allowed the dilemma to become an issue in Tennessee in 1925. Lupe Vélez was a Latin American actress in Hollywood. Before Hollywood, the Mexican Revolution (1910) affected her family's fortune, so she began working as a vaudeville performer. She became well-known and when she made it to Los Angeles, she worked as an actress during the graveyard (or night) shift in Hollywood. The Spanish versions of the films were during the night while the English versions were during the day, which was one of the detriments she had to face. She was popular for her role in a comedy film, Mexican Spitfire, because it emphasized and portrayed her fiery personality on screen. The stereotype "The Name Game" was another obstacle she faced dealing with her name. The industry recommended that she should change her name because
An example of an ethical dilemma I faced was the time I was asked to use an illegal substance. It was the summer of my 8th grade year and my friend from California came to visit me. We were sitting at the back of my house when suddenly he pulled out a roll of paper and a Ziploc plastic bag containing a type of leaf. I asked him what was in the bag; he said it was marijuana he purchased from a dealer on the streets. As he began to roll the paper with marijuana now inside it, he asked me if I wanted to try it. Suddenly I was faced with a choice. As peer pressure continued to overwhelm me I remembered a research paper that I had written about the negative effects of marijuana and in that moment I knew my answer was no. I resolved the problem
After having several complaints it was wise for the company to promote more minorities. Allowing minorities to have a much resource that the need within the company will help them move in a positive direction. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is a law regulating equal employment opportunities based on character or ability rather than on race. It is an agency of the Department of Justice charged with enforcing Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other antidiscrimination laws. Title VII prohibits employers from discriminating against someone because of their race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. These are some of the ways that General Motors can work on meeting legal requirements that go beyond legal
This paper will look at how Aunt Ella’s Pie Company can avoid violating any legal laws through Human Resource Manager’s creating policies resulting in best practice.
