William Penn As A Holy Experiment

In the 1800s slavery was a major issue in its time. Slavery is described as being held against someone's will;It is being imprisoned and not being able to escape a dark abyss. People that were enslaved were either born into slavery or vended off to plantations workers. There were 2 different labor systems that were the North and the South. The North and South labor system have similarities that they share as well as differences.

Often, people became indentured slaves due to hardships that were inevitable during their time. Two examples of such people are John Harrower and Richard Frethorne. While John Harrower lived a somewhat respectable and comfortable life as and indentured servant, Richard Frethorne had a much more difficult time. One reason for this may be because of their time differences; Jon Harrower is from the late 1700s, while Richard Frethorne is from the mid 1600s. The different scrutinizes between the Puritans and William Penn on their groups as the spiritual experiment because William Penn didn’t have and restrictions and they had complete religious freedom, while the Puritans persecuted and kicked people out their church for trying to reform their religion. When William Penn established Pennsylvania he imagined it to become a place where you could have spiritual freedom and could have unity. Churches in Pennsylvania wasn’t established, it was voluntary to come to services and he condemned the right to worship as they desired. The puritans wanted a land based on only their belief. they held certain requirements while the Quakers welcomed everyone. Slavery and indentured servitude were the primary means of help for the wealthy in America. Either as a slave or as an indentured servant a person was required to work in the fields maintain crops, as a house servant or as the owner of debtor so chooses. The treatment of both was very similar, but the method and means to which they came to America were uniquely different as the following examples will illustrate.

After establishing the last English colony during the seventeenth century, William Penn sought ways to create a safe haven for those who suffer from religious persecution in Europe. Additionally, William Penn also pictured a place of equality in which colonists and Indians can live in harmony while enjoying their religious freedom. William Penn might have considered his colony in Pennsylvania as his “holy experiment” because he wanted to try something different and test out new things within his colony such as establishing a place where there is religious freedom and equality. Furthermore, William Penn was an active member of the Society of Friends, Quakers, and his participation with the group helped him develop the concept of his “holy experiment” along with helping those who faced religious persecution.

Indentured servants were a limited resource as they would eventually become free. The non-slaves became more intransigent and apt to resist the efforts of the ruling class’s economic and political subjugation upon them. Southern planters began to look toward the African slave trade as a reliable source of controllable labor. The economic power of England was rising and helped to increase the level of slave purchasing and selling. The influx of white indentured servants from England into Virginia drastically decreased which only accelerated the adoption of slavery. African slaves were a more easily controlled and exploited labor pool. “By the 1730s, the number of white indentured servants had dwindled to insignificance” (Nash, 60). The two ideas have several similarities, but they also have differences. Indentured servants during the 1600 and 1700s were Europeans, whereas slaves were from Africa. The indentured servants willingly signed contracts to work for colonists in return for basic living needs like food, shelter, clothes, etc. Needless to say, the type of treatment given to the indentured servants depended on the colonists they were working for. Slaves, on the other hand, were taken away from their African homeland and put on ships to America unwillingly. When the slaves got here, usually the work was harsh, and the colonists were not forced to provide anything to their slaves.

Indentured servants where men and women who signed a contract to work for a certain number of years, usually between four and seven, in exchange for transportation to the colonies. The Chesapeake Bay colonies, Virginia and Maryland, where especially condition to use indentured servants. During this essay I will explain why the Chesapeake Bay colonies were in such need of the servants and why eventually they turned to slavery to fill the void left by the indentured servants.

Charles II of England granted William Penn the right to start a democratic proprietary colony in Pennsylvania as a way of repaying a debt he owed Penn's father; William Penn needed this colony in order to create a haven of religious tolerance an take himself and his fellow Quakers away from the persecution they faced in England as a result of their refusal to participate in the army (they were pacifists) and their refusal to pay taxes that would go towards the Church of England.

Indentured servants were very important to the development of the colonies. In the early years, there were labor shortages and indentured servants provided cheap labor. By bringing in people with specialized skills and providing immigration for other who could not afford, indentured servitude helped the colonies expand. The colonies had a lot of land, and indentured servants made up half the population (parliament announced that convicts could escape the hangman by relocating to the colonies.)This led to a quicker progress of initial growth of the colonies. Although this system helped with the growth of the colonies, it was replaced by the 1700’s with slaves. The reason was that slaves served for life instead of servants who served for 4-7 years. This was more profitable than buying servants over and over again. Also, once you owned a slave you owned their children, which was a bonus because you wouldn’t have to buy any more slaves. Overall, slaves replaced servants because they were more profitable to buy and the supplies of these slaves seemed inexhaustible since there population was matching the number of whites at that time and

The institutions of slavery and being an indentured servant is different yet similar. Slavery was set up in a way that you were born into it and the only way out was death. Slavery was a system set up that you will be enslaved for life while indentured servitude had an agreement. The agreement was that you work like a slave for three to seven years then you would be given freedom as well as land. When you were a slave and an indentured servant the treatment you endured was unbearable.

In current day, one could argue that both are preposterous notions, however for the time, was either beneficial for anyone? Looking back on how to country developed following this time, through the years of slavery in the civil war, it may look like the only people to benefit from slavery or having an indentured servant, is the owner. Despite how either has looked throughout many of the eras of this country, being an indentured servant had very good potential for benefiting the servant.
