Winston Smith is a thirdy-nine-year-old intellectual, fatalistic, frail and a thin man which is the minor member of the ruling Party in near-future London. We experience the nightmarish world that the writer envisions through his eyes. Winston is extremely pensive, curious and desperate to understand how and why the Party exercises has such absolute power in Oceania. He passionately hates the totalitarian control of his government and the Party. He has his own revolutionary dreams.He wants to test the limits of its power and he commits crimes, have an illegal love affair with Julia to get himself secretly into the anti-Party Brotherhood.

We might think, he never appears in the novel or he may not actually exist but Big Brother is the ruler of Oceania. At everywhere Winston sees his posters with the message “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.” Big Brother’s image haunts Winston’s life and fills him with hatred and fascination.
Mr. Charrington - He’s an old man who runs a secondhand store. He encourages and seems to support Winston’s rebellion against the Party and his relationship with Julia after he rents him a room. He seems to share Winston’s interest in the past. He also is a member of the Thought Police.
Syme - Syme is an intelligent man; he works with Winston at the Ministry of Truth. He specializes in language and he is working on the new edition of the Newspeak dictionary. Winston believes Syme is too intelligent to stay in the Party’s favor.
Parsons - He’s a fat and a dull Party member who lives near Winston. Parsons works at the Ministry of Truth and he has a dull wife and a group of suspicious children.

The antagonist of the story is O’Brien. He, as does Winston, works in the Ministry of Truth where he holds an administrative role, which is unknown to Winston. However in reality, O’Brien is actually an agent for the Thought Police who soon arrests Winston and tortures him for several weeks. Winston all along thought O’Brien was against the Thought Police.
