The field of medicine has been constantly progressing through the centuries with surgery, as one of its most fundamental structure of medicine. Cutting people open to find the harm and relieving them of it. But as the field of surgery progress over time; the surgical environment has developed a gender sphere that makes it difficult for women to become surgeons. The glass ceiling is a political metaphor that exists to explain the gender disadvantages within disciplined jobs (The Glass Ceiling Effect*). Women today, regardless of their qualifications face an obstacle that “appear[s] to be a distinctively gender phenomenon” (1) in any highly disciplined jobs, especially in the field of surgery. An estimated of 8.6 million surgeries are …show more content…
One of the most traditional roles to be assumed as women, is to embrace the role of motherhood, but as of the 21st century, many women are deciding to do both, facing criticism for doing both or one of the either (The Glass Ceiling Effect*). As the controversy continues for women in the workforce, this research will explain how women today are breaking through the glass in the field of a male dominated profession of surgery. Although it will be limited only to women who have completed college with a bachelor’s degree and have had extensive education in the medical field, it serves as a foundation as I call into question why the role of women in the field of surgery have not become more prominent. Since I, myself want to go into the medical field, I am curious as to how this glass ceiling will affect me as well. Exploring further to what is causing the glass ceiling within the field of surgery will help readers gain a more understanding view as to why it exists and why perpetuating this cycle is harmful to society (O’Sullivan). I want to focus my research on how the grueling field of surgery can halt motherhood temporary and how female surgeons have transcended society’s bounds to overcome the negative stigma of doing both. I also want to research why that regardless of a female’s qualifications in the field, it still affects their equal opportunity evident through their salary discrepancies and promotional positions and the consequence of a salary gap (The
Meaning women have additional problematic issue then man. For example in education women face more obstacles as faculty rather when in manager and directors in corporate America. Even though there been great progress in the workplace, most jobs are segregated by sexes. There is wag gaps, the average women have to work roughly 4 months extra every year to make the same wage as man. For example, when the educational attainment increases the gender pay decreases for women no matter what levels of education than men. In other words, women earn 77cents for every dollar man earn and put in their pocket (Benokraitis, 2010, p.160-161). Discrimination where both woman and man share in the workplace is the glass ceiling and glass escalator. The glass ceiling being, “women efforts to scale organizational and professional hierarchies but cant because they are constrained by invisible barriers to promotion in their careers, caused mainly by sexist attitudes of men in the highest position” Similarly, men that choose to go into position like nurse and librarians encounter the glass escalator mostly vituperative criticism from the public when they are in the most female-identified specialties” “Therefore man are pressured to move out of the most female-identified areas, and up to those regarded as more legitimate and prestigious for men” (Williams, 1992, p.
The tones go off, there is a scramble for shirts, ties, and boots. Dispatch announces a motor vehicle accident five blocks away. EMTs and Paramedics climb into ambulances. Police are reporting multiple personal injuries. There is a rush of adrenaline through all those involved. The street comes alive with flashing red and white lights and screaming sirens. Ambulances tear down the street to the accident scene. They arrive to find four cars involved in a high-speed collision. There are seven people involved in this particular accident. Additional trucks are requested and the original scene repeats itself as three more teams join the first two at the scene.
The “Glass Escalator Theory” is a theory that explains how men in female dominated branches of the medical field can advance faster than women. The “Glass Escalator” term describes how a man can surpass a woman in the same field and the woman might not even notice (Goudreau 1). Women are often too busy fighting obstacles that keep them from advancing and fail to notice how men are often given the higher advantage, in turn, riding this glass escalator to the top. These two theories are very prevalent in the medical field, especially in the branches that women tend to be more involved in, such as nursing, pediatrics, and gynecology. The Glass Escalator shows how men are able to receive more promotions in pay and positions even if women are more involved in the field.
In the 21st Century the number of women enrolling in higher education institutions is surpassing the numbers of men enrolled. The graduation rates of women from high school and higher education are most often higher than for men. The number of women graduates from most professional occupations, including higher paying medicine, law and business, will exceed the number of men graduates in the near future. In numerous occupational areas with a majority of women graduates, salaries already surpass salaries in occupational areas with a majority of men graduates.
She uses an example of a receptionist and a nurse to further the idea, that again, the work of women is made invisible through our ideas about technology and careers relating to it. According to The United States Department of Labor, 92 percent of nurse positions are held by women. This position is now associated with work which is often seen as less dempanding and a undereducated position. The behind the scenes work of measuring, recording, and entering data needs to be very specific and carefully monitored because this work is nowhere near mindless. Jobs that many women hold are very powerful and important contrary to societal beliefs. The same stereotype goes against men as well. About 8 percent of the nurse population is male. Many male students who are planning to follow a medical career often become doctors because of the negative views male nurses have. One cannot only focus on one group of people, women, but need to look at the larger audience of women and
If you are a female physician working in this community you are considered to be at a disadvantage, outnumbered. Here is a situation, in the twenty-first century, where gender plays a factor in social context of work and learning. Considering these examples require understanding the workplace surroundings, where work and learning occurs is all the more important.
Females started their journey into the medical field centuries ago. During these times, inequality of the sexes was a major factor in how society was established and what policies were put in place. Because these norms were put into place during a major time in Economic development, it made it even more difficult for women to gain equal opportunity. Women began their journey with a lack of education and an inferior status. However, as time passed, they increased their abilities and knowledge and began receiving more equal opportunity than previously found in history. The reasons for female’s ability to take on the medical field were not simple, there was a great deal of man power and work that went into getting these equal chances. Specifically, women viewed as the pioneers of medicine made huge strides to the equality of education, soon after education systems fell to the female pursuit, jobs
My mother has always promoted sisterhood and support for women. Growing up, I was taught that women, although we can do anything we want to do, need a support system, because we are traditionally the underdogs, and we should not accept being treated unfairly. My mother likes to tell a story about how, when she was a girl, she told her dad that she had decided to become a lawyer when she grew up. In response to her proclamation, my grandfather, an attorney himself, asked, "Isn’t that an awfully expensive education for a girl?"
In Dr. McAlister’s piece, “Breaking the Silence of the Switch,” she emphasizes the importance of informing patients directly of trainee participation in surgery.
Times has changed, and it was over 40 years ago that my mother was in medical school. However, gender roles and internalized sexism play a significant role not only in healthcare, but in other industries as
The initial answer is that women today can not simply give up their roles of motherhood and wife because they have gained ground outside the home. Household and child care responsibilities still apply to women even if she wakes early to start her 9am job and doesn't return home until 5pm. Yet, this answer is inherently problematic. The responsibilities discussed above should not mean an inequitable amount of time spent on her children and family as compared to her husband. House-hold responsibilities should not result in less sleep than her husband and having less time
Women are seen at the top of their class in schools/colleges and continue to make up the majority of students in medical schools as well as in graduate health administration programs. Yet, there is an alarming and crucial gender gap that continues to exist in today’s healthcare system. The major struggle that successful working women face today lies in the misalignment of our current work culture and the values of the workforce. In addition to contributing to work–life integration conflicts, this disconnect essentially forms the gender leadership gap. Not only does the lack of women at the highest ranks of academic medicine send a clear message to women that they must choose between career advancement and their personal life, but this also represents a loss of talent for academic health centers as they fail to recruit and retain the brightest individuals. In order to effectively close the gender leadership gap and meet the needs of the next generation of physicians, scientists, and educators, it is immensely
Nationality has an impact on respect in a way that people tend to refer to others by their countries of origin. Depending on how good one is at performing a certain task both in school and at work which draws one respect from peers. For example based on data from the Association of American Medical Colleges(AAMC) ,women make up a larger percentage of residents in pediatrics compared to men that specialize more in surgery. The same gender-bias in some male-dominated specialties may deter female residents from pursuing them. “Orthopedic surgery is still very male dominated and it’s one of those fields where the culture of the specialty reflects a ‘boy’s boy’ image,” said Dr Ring. “I don’t think many women have known how to fit into that group
All around the world people are being discriminated; some are discriminated because of their race, while others are because of their gender, such as women. In today world, it is no different than it was 10,000 years ago. Women are still sold into prostitution, forced to marry someone they don’t love, have no right for abortion or birth control, have little or no access to education, and have to fully rely on men. This is not fair at all, women should have right’s, they didn’t before here in the United States, but now they do (even though it still exists here). If women can have right’s here in the United States they should be able to else ware. In all discrimination against women is unfair, and unjust, because here in the U.S it is
I have worked for the University Of New Mexico School Of Medicine in the department of Pathology for almost three years now. The position allows me to work with a strikingly diverse group of people, from other technicians to doctors, surgeons, and PhDs in the field of biomedical and health science research. After I complete my MBA, my goal is to continue on in this field in a managerial capacity and eventually in consulting. I have noted, however, that there are far more women than men working in this field. This non-traditional makeup may have its own unique advantages and challenges. Therefore, in order to improve my chances at future career success, it is in my best interest to gain an in-depth understanding of the particular
